    A Non-Zeeman Interpretation for Polarized Maser Radiation and the Magnetic Field at the Atmospheres of Late-Type Giants

    The linear polarization that is observed, together with likely changes in the orientation of the magnetic field along the line of sight and hence of the optical axes of the medium, can lead to the circular polarization that is observed in the radiation of the circumstellar SiO masers. A magnetic field greater than only about 30 mG is required, in contrast to 10-100 G that would be implied by the Zeeman interpretation. To assess quantitatively the likely changes in orientation of the magnetic field, calculations are performed with representative field configurations that are created by statistical sampling using a Kolmogorov-like power spectrum.Comment: 7 pages Latex (aaspp4.sty), 3 ps-figures.     A comparison of matrix methods for calculating eigenvalues in acoustically lined ducts

    Three approximate methods - finite differences, weighted residuals, and finite elements - were used to solve the eigenvalue problem which arises in finding the acoustic modes and propagation constants in an absorptively lined two-dimensional duct without airflow. The matrix equations derived for each of these methods were solved for the eigenvalues corresponding to various values of wall impedance. Two matrix orders, 20 x 20 and 40 x 40, were used. The cases considered included values of wall admittance for which exact eigenvalues were known and for which several nearly equal roots were present. Ten of the lower order eigenvalues obtained from the three approximate methods were compared with solutions calculated from the exact characteristic equation in order to make an assessment of the relative accuracy and reliability of the three methods. The best results were given by the finite element method using a cubic polynomial. Excellent accuracy was consistently obtained, even for nearly equal eigenvalues, by using a 20 x 20 order matrix

    Spectra of Maser Radiation from a Turbulent, Circumnuclear Accretion Disk. III. Circular polarization

    Calculations are performed for the circular polarization of maser radiation from a turbulent, Keplerian disk that is intended to represent the sub-parsec disk at the nucleus of the galaxy NGC4258. The polarization in the calculations is a result of the Zeeman effect in the regime in which the Zeeman splitting is much less than the spectral linebreadth. Plausible configurations for turbulent magnetic and velocity fields in the disk are created by statistical methods. This turbulence, along with the Keplerian velocity gradients and the blending of the three hyperfine components to form the 616āˆ’5236_{16} - 5_{23} masing transition of water, are key ingredients in determining the appearance of the polarized spectra that are calculated. These spectra are quite different from the polarized spectra that would be expected for a two-level transition where there is no hyperfine structure. The effect of the hyperfine structure on the polarization is most striking in the calculations for the maser emission that represents the central (or systemic) features of NGC4258. Information about magnetic fields is inferred from observations for polarized maser radiation and bears on the structure of accretion disks.Comment: Latex, uses aastex, eucal, to be published in the Astrophysical Journa

    Sources of Business Cycle Fluctuations

    What shocks account for the business cycle frequency and long run movements of output and prices? This paper addresses this question using the identifying assumption that only supply shocks, such as shocks to technology, oil prices, and labor supply affect output in the long run. Real and monetary aggregate demand shocks can affect output, but only in the short run. This assumption sufficiently restricts the reduced form of key macroeconomic variables to allow estimation of the shocks and their effect on output and price at all frequencies. Aggregate demand shocks account for about twenty to thirty percent of output fluctuations at business cycle frequencies. Technological shocks account for about one-quarter of cyclical fluctuations, and about one-third of output's variance at low frequencies. Shocks to oil prices are important in explaining episodes in the 1970's and 1980's. Shocks that permanently affect labor input account for the balance of fluctuations in output, namely, about half of its variance at all frequencies.

In this work, the effect of iron on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the Alā€“Mgā€“Si diecast alloys with different Mn concentrations is investigated. The CALPHAD (acronym of Calculation of Phase Diagrams) modelling with the thermodynamic properties of the multi-component Alā€“Mgā€“Siā€“Mnā€“Fe and Alā€“Mgā€“Siā€“Fe systems is carried out to understand the role of alloying on the formation of different primary Fe-rich intermetallic compounds. The results showed that the Fe-rich intermetallic phases precipitate in two solidification stages in the high pressure die casting process: one is in the shot sleeve and the other is in the die cavity, resulting in the different morphologies and sizes. In the Alā€“Mgā€“Siā€“Mn alloys, the Fe-rich intermetallic phase formed in the shot sleeve exhibited coarse compact morphology and those formed in the die cavity were fine compact particles. Although with different morphologies, the compact intermetallics were identified as the same Ī±-AlFeMnSi phase with typical composition of Al24(Fe,Mn)6Si2. With increased Fe content, Ī²-AlFe was found in the microstructure with a long needle-shaped morphology, which was identified as Al13(Fe,Mn)4Si0.25. In the Alā€“Mgā€“Si alloy, the identified Fe-rich intermetallics included the compact Ī±-AlFeSi phase with typical composition of Al8Fe2Si and the needle-shaped Ī²-AlFe phase with typical composition of Al13Fe4. Generally, the existence of iron in the alloy slightly increases the yield strength, but significantly reduces the elongation. The ultimate tensile strength maintains at similar levels when Fe contents is less than 0.5 wt%, but decreases significantly with the further increased Fe concentration in the alloys. CALPHAD modelling shows that the addition of Mn enlarges the Fe tolerance for the formation of Ī±-AlFeMnSi intermetallics and suppresses the formation of Ī²-AlFe phase in the Alā€“Mgā€“Si alloys, and thus improves their mechanical properties.EPSRC and JL

    A flight investigation of a terminal area navigation and guidance concept for STOL aircraft

    A digital avionics system referred to as STOLAND has been test-flown in the NASA CV-340 to obtain performance data for time-controlled guidance in the manual flight director mode. The advanced system components installed in the cockpit included an electronic attitude director indicator and an electronic multifunction display. Navigation guidance and control computations were all performed in the digital computer. Approach paths were flown which included a narrow 180-deg turn and a 1-min, 5-deg straight-in approach to the 30-m altitude go-around point. Results are presented for 20 approaches: (1) blended radio/inertial navigation using TACAN and a microwave scanning beam landing guidance system (MODILS) permitted a smooth transition from area navigation (TACAN) to precision terminal navigation (MODILS), (2) guidance system (flight director) performance measured at an altitude of 30.5 m was within that prescribed for category II CTOL operations on a standard runway, and (3) time of arrival at a point about 2 mi from touchdown was about 4 sec plus or minus sec later than the computed nominal arrival time
