The effects of soil moisture, soil texture, and host orientation on the ability of Heterorhabditis bacteriophora (Rhabditida: Heterorhabditidae) to infect Galleria mellonella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae)
Abstract
Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPN) demonstrate potential as a biological control for soil dwelling insects. However, edaphic factors, such as soil moisture and texture impact the efficacy of EPN on a host. The objectives were to examine the effects of soil texture and moisture on 1) the infection rate of Galleria mellonella L. by EPN and; 2) the ability of H. bacteriophora (Poinar) to move through the soil to find a host at different orientations. Soil textures consisted of sand, a sand/silt/peat mixture, and a silt/peat mixture at 50% and 100% moisture. A general linear model was used to evaluate infection rates and EPN movement. Both soil moisture (p \u3c 0.05) and texture (p \u3c 0.05) had significant effects on nematodes infection rates of G. mellonella. Texture, moisture, and host orientation did not significantly affect (p \u3e 0.05) the ability of EPN to find a host. While EPN were able to find a host within a variety of soil types, soils that held more water had higher infection rates than soils that held less water, suggesting that moisture may be a key component in facilitating infection by EPN. By understanding the factors that influence the ability of EPN to find and infect a host, improved bio-control programs using EPN can be developed

This article takes the thesis of a recent Western scholatrly work regarding a Western philosophical reaction to the pain of losing something one love as an opputunity to examine similar themes in the writings pf Murasaki Shikibu. Henry Staten assumes that his claims can be universally applied. The question is whether Murasaki Shikibu is as troubles by the pain of loss as Staten is, and, if so, whether she responds with similar sreative strangies to allesiate pain. The article outlines Statesn\u27s argument that criticizes erotic live being transformed into the higher desire of love for philosophy and so where mortal beings as belived pbjects are replaces by eternal objecys such as Truth and Beauty. I then ecplore some of Murasaki\u27s notions of beauty and its loss and note how they are founded in ideas traditional to Japan. I conclude that these idead may provide a less anxious view of beauty\u27s loss at the outset, but that there may indeed be similar reactions in Murasaki Shikibu\u27s writing, particularly The Tale of Genji. But while Western philosophy tried to replace the love for transient objects with a love for eternal pbjects, Nurasaki creates a universe where beloved transient objects may disappear but return in a similar form, as when Hikaru Genji, loves Murasaki no Ue for resembling Fujitsubo no Chugu who herself resembled his mother. Futher, Murasaki eroticizes and beautifies the process of loss and death itself
Dividing population genetic distance data with the software Partitioning Optimization with Restricted Growth Strings (PORGS): an application for Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha), Vancouver Island, British Columbia
A new method of finding the optimal group membership and number of groupings to partition population genetic distance data is presented. The software program Partitioning Optimization with Restricted Growth Strings (PORGS), visits all possible set partitions and deems
acceptable partitions to be those that reduce mean intracluster distance. The optimal number of groups is determined with the gap statistic which compares PORGS results with a reference distribution. The PORGS method was validated by a simulated data set with a known distribution.
For efficiency, where values of n were larger, restricted growth strings (RGS) were used to bipartition populations during a nested search (bi-PORGS). Bi-PORGS was applied to a set of genetic data from 18 Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus
tshawytscha) populations from the west coast of Vancouver Island. The optimal grouping of these populations
corresponded to four geographic locations: 1) Quatsino Sound, 2) Nootka Sound, 3) Clayoquot +Barkley sounds,
and 4) southwest Vancouver Island. However, assignment of populations to groups did not strictly reflect the geographical divisions; fish of Barkley Sound origin that had strayed into the Gold River and close genetic similarity
between transferred and donor populations meant groupings crossed geographic boundaries. Overall, stock structure determined by this partitioning method was similar to that
determined by the unweighted pair-group method with arithmetic averages (UPGMA), an agglomerative clustering algorithm
