    Characterisation of the cold metal transfer (CMT) process and its application for low dilution cladding

    The process characteristics of the synergic cold metal transfer (CMT) process have been examined for welding aluminium alloy. Utilising a simple backlighting system and through the arc monitoring the droplet transfer modes were identified. Whilst the modified short circuit mode was evident for the lower parameter range, a two part transfer mode based upon a combination of spray and short circuit transfer was observed for the mid to upper parameter range. The technology was also explored as a cladding process for applying to ternary alloyed (Al–Cu–Mg) aluminium plate. This alloy system is known to be susceptible to solidification cracking when MIG welded using the binary Al-2319 (Al–Cu) filler wire, this being due to the wide element freezing range of the weld resulting from mixing with the base material. Utilising this filler, weld dilution ratios for both CMT and pulsed welding were identified across the examined parameter range. The CMT process exhibited greater control of dilution that enabled deposition of a quasi-binary (Al–Cu) layer exhibiting a less crack susceptible composition.     A cooperative educational program with the U.S. military is described to illustrate a unique opportunity that confronted a graduate healthcare management program. The resulting degree program supported the military’s operational medical mission but also presented interesting and unexpected challenges resulting from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Pressure to provide cost-effective services has been mounting for many years. Civilian and military cooperative ventures can be highly successful. The program addressed the need for enhanced managerial skills. Program content focused on traditional business and healthcare content with applications tailored to military settings. While instruction was provided primarily by civilian faculty, active duty military instructors were also incorporated into specific course content areas. Program pricing and marketing were critical to success. Technical course delivery issues raised additional challenges due to work obligations and deployments. Academic institutions need to assist military commands in achieving their training objectives and can benefit from the experience.     Evaluation of XL370A-Derived Maize Germplasm for Resistance to Leaf Feeding by Fall Armyworm

    The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is an economically important insect with larvae damaging maize (Zea mays L.) leaves and ear tissue. The pest has become resistant to several classes of insecticide and Bt-maize grown in some geographical areas. Once discovered and characterized, native sources of maize resistance to this pest could be effectively integrated with existing control tactics. The objective for this study was to test experimental lines derived from maize germplasm XL370A for resistance to leaf feeding by fall armyworm. Plants were grown in the field in 2018 and 2019, artificially infested with fall armyworm, and leaf damage scores recorded. Average 14-day scores for experimental maize lines GEMN-0095 (5.8), GEMN-0096 (5.7), and GEMN-0133 (5.6) were moderately resistant and 7- and 14-day scores for these entries were not significantly different across both years. Cuba 94 was not significantly different from the three entries with the exception of having greater 7-day damage scores in 2019. GEMN-0048 was not resistant but variability was observed in 14-day scores between 4 (resistant) and 8 (susceptible) in individual plants. The experimental lines are adapted for growth in temperate regions and might provide maize breeding programs with useful levels of resistance to fall armyworm

    In this short article, I argue that popular business discourse on the role of management consultancy in the promotion and translation of management ideas is often critical, informed by more or less implicit ethical and political concerns with employee security, equity, openness and the transparency and legitimacy of responsibility. These concerns are, in part, ‘sayable’ because their object is seen as a scapegoat for management. Nevertheless, combined with the popular form of their expression, they can support and legitimize critical studies of management learning, a discipline which otherwise has become overly concerned with processual and situational phenomena at the expense of broader political dynamics and of the content and consequences of management and management knowledg

    Structure investigation of nano-FeO(OH) modified clinoptilolite tuff for antimony removal

    Biomimetic sol-gel synthesis was used to prepare new FeO(OH) zeolite (clinoptilolite tuff) adsorbent effective for antimony removal. The product was compared with other on the market accessible natural or commercial adsorption materials like granulated ferric hydroxide GEH, powder of zero valent iron (ZVI)- nanofer and the new synthesized oxi(hydr)oxide FeO(OH) and characterized by XRD, XPS, Raman, FT IR, TG, DTA, DTG, TEM and SEM techniques. Based upon the SEM analysis, the oxidized nanofer sample revealed the existence of hematite and goethite and morphology of FeO(OH) dopant confirmed the presence of ferrihydrite, in less extent also magnetite and hematite. Recorded exothermic maxima on DTA curves for powdered FeO(OH) zeolite at 460 °C and for pure component FeO(OH) at 560 °C indicated an 100 °C shifted exothermic effect, which characterized strong chemical interaction of FeO(OH) with zeolite structure. Based upon the XPS analyses, also the difference between Fe species in the raw and FeO(OH) doped zeolite was found in increasing Si/Al ratio, however only at the surface below app. 5 nm, measured as 3.94 for raw and 5.38 for sample treated with alkalic solution. The plotting of adsorption isotherms in the system studied clearly showed the increasing uptake capacity of the adsorbents towards antimony with the increased S(BET) data (GEH ˃FeO(OH)˃FeO(OH) zeolite˃nanofer)

    What's the point of knowing how?

    Why is it useful to talk and think about knowledge-how? Using Edward Craig’s discussion of the function of the concepts of knowledge and knowledge-how as a jumping off point, this paper argues that considering this question can offer us new angles on the debate about knowledge-how. We consider two candidate functions for the concept of knowledge-how: pooling capacities, and mutual reliance. Craig makes the case for pooling capacities, which connects knowledge-how to our need to pool practical capacities. I argue that the evidence is much more equivocal. My suggested diagnosis is that the concept of knowledge-how plays both functions, meaning that the concept of knowledge-how is inconsistent, and that the debate about knowledge-how is at least partly a metalinguistic negotiation.     A LOFAR mini-survey for low-frequency radio emission from the nearest brown dwarfs

    We have conducted a mini-survey for low-frequency radio emission from some of the closest brown dwarfs to the Sun with rapid rotation rates: SIMP J013656.5 +093347, WISEPC 150649.97+702736.0, and WISEPA J174124.26+255319.5.We have placed robust 3s upper limits on the flux density in the 111 – 169 MHz frequency range for these targets: WISE 1506: < 0:72 mJy; WISE 1741: < 0:87 mJy; SIMP 0136: < 0:66 mJy. At 8 hours of integration per target to achieve these limits, we find that systematic and detailed study of this class of object at LOFAR frequencies will require a substantial dedication of resources
