    From Banks to DeFi: the Evolution of the Lending Market

    The Internet of Value (IoV) with its distributed ledger technology (DLT) underpinning has created new forms of lending markets. As an integral part of the decentralised finance (DeFi) ecosystem, lending protocols are gaining tremendous traction, holding an aggregate liquidity supply of over $40 billion at the time of writing. In this paper, we enumerate the challenges of traditional money markets led by banks and lending platforms and present advantageous characteristics of DeFi lending protocols that might help resolve deep-rooted issues in the conventional lending environment. With the examples of Maker, Compound and Aave, we describe in detail the mechanism of DeFi lending protocols. We discuss the persisting reliance of DeFi lending on the traditional financial system and conclude with the outlook of the lending market in the IoV era

    An Analysis of Blockchain Adoption in Supply Chains Between 2010 and 2020

    In this research, the evolution of Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) in supply chains has been mapped from the inception of the technology until June 2020, utilising primarily public data sources. Two hundred seventy-one blockchain projects operating in the supply chain have been analysed on parameters such as their inception dates, types of blockchain, stages reached, sectors applied to and type of organisation that founded the project. We confirm generally understood trends in the blockchain market with the creation of projects following the general hype and funding levels in the industry. We observe most activity in the Agriculture/Grocery sector and the Freight/Logistics sector. We see the shift of market interest from primarily private companies (startups) to public companies and consortia and the change in blockchain adoption from Ethereum to Hyperledger. Finally, we observe higher success and lower failure rates for Hyperledger-based projects in comparison to Ethereum-based projects.Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures, 6 table

    Energy Footprint of Blockchain Consensus Mechanisms Beyond Proof-of-Work

    Popular permissionless distributed ledger technology (DLT) systems using proof-of-work (PoW) for Sybil attack resistance have extreme energy requirements, drawing stern criticism from academia, business and the media. DLT systems building on alternative consensus mechanisms, particularly proof-of-stake (PoS), aim to address this downside. In this paper, we take an initial step towards comparing the energy requirements of such systems to understand whether they achieve this goal equally well. While multiple studies have analysed the energy demands of individual blockchains, little comparative work has been done. We approach this research gap by formalising a basic consumption model for PoS blockchains. Applying this model to six archetypal blockchains generates three main findings. First, we confirm the concerns around the energy footprint of PoW by showing that Bitcoin's energy consumption exceeds the energy consumption of all PoS-based systems analysed by at least three orders of magnitude. Second, we illustrate that there are significant differences in energy consumption among the PoS-based systems analysed, with permissionless systems having a larger energy footprint overall owing to their higher replication factor. Third, we point out that the type of hardware that validators use has a considerable impact on whether the energy consumption of PoS blockchains is comparable with or considerably larger than that of centralised systems

    Retrospective real-life efficacy assessment of teneligliptin in Indian T2DM patients

    Background: Teneligliptin is been introduced recently in Indian market and data available are limited on Indian patients. Hence, the hospital based real life retrospective evaluation was planned out to evaluate, the efficacy of teneligliptin in type 2 diabetes mellitus in Indian population. Hence study was designed, a retrospective evaluation, of efficacy of teneligliptin in type 2 diabetes mellitus in Indian population.Methods: Data of 775 patients, who were prescribed teneligliptin was collected from hospital records. Teneligliptin 20mg was prescribed to all patients who were uncontrolled on other OHAs and for a mean duration of 8 weeks. Parameter evaluated in this study were change in FBG, PPBG and HbA1c from the baseline at 8week. With profile of outcome i.e. response and failure rates were also assessed with respect to age, gender, BMI and duration of diabetes.Results: Of 775 patients were enrolled, 427 were males and 348 females. The average age was 53.04 years among the study population. The mean duration of diabetes was 23 months. There was significant change in HbA1c, fasting and postprandial blood glucose levels at 8 week of teneligliptin therapy. Changes in HbA1c, FPG and PPG from baseline to end of study were-1.22┬▒1.12% (p=0.001), -35.8┬▒25.5mg/dl (p=0.001) and -60.7┬▒28.6mg/dl (p=0.001) respectively. Out of 775 patients, 106 (13,7%) were non-responders where it was further sub analysed with different parameter such as age, gender, BMI and duration of diabetes in order to observe response of teneligliptin in diabetic patients.Conclusions: This real life retrospective evaluation showed efficacy of teneligliptin in real world scenario. It can be an effective alternative to conventional gliptins available for prescription in India

    Evolution of ESG-focused DLT Research: An NLP Analysis of the Literature

    As Distributed Ledger Technologies (DLTs) rapidly evolve, their impacts extend beyond technology, influencing environmental and societal aspects. This evolution has increased publications, making manual literature analysis increasingly challenging. We address this with a Natural Language Processing (NLP)-based systematic literature review method to explore the intersection of Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) with its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) aspects. Our approach involves building and refining a directed citation network from 107 seed papers to a corpus of 24,539 publications and fine-tuning a transformer-based language model for Named Entity Recognition (NER) on DLT and ESG domains. Applying this model, we distilled the corpus to 505 key publications, enabling an inaugural literature review and temporal graph analysis of DLT's evolution in ESG contexts. Our contributions include an adaptable and scalable NLP-driven systematic literature review methodology and a unique NER dataset of 54,808 entities, tailored for DLT and ESG research. Our inaugural literature review demonstrates their applicability and effectiveness in analyzing DLT's evolution and impacts, proving invaluable for stakeholders in the DLT domain
