Dead Reckoning Localization Technique for Mobile Wireless Sensor Networks

Localization in wireless sensor networks not only provides a node with its geographical location but also a basic requirement for other applications such as geographical routing. Although a rich literature is available for localization in static WSN, not enough work is done for mobile WSNs, owing to the complexity due to node mobility. Most of the existing techniques for localization in mobile WSNs uses Monte-Carlo localization, which is not only time-consuming but also memory intensive. They, consider either the unknown nodes or anchor nodes to be static. In this paper, we propose a technique called Dead Reckoning Localization for mobile WSNs. In the proposed technique all nodes (unknown nodes as well as anchor nodes) are mobile. Localization in DRLMSN is done at discrete time intervals called checkpoints. Unknown nodes are localized for the first time using three anchor nodes. For their subsequent localizations, only two anchor nodes are used. The proposed technique estimates two possible locations of a node Using Bezouts theorem. A dead reckoning approach is used to select one of the two estimated locations. We have evaluated DRLMSN through simulation using Castalia simulator, and is compared with a similar technique called RSS-MCL proposed by Wang and Zhu .Comment: Journal Paper, IET Wireless Sensor Systems, 201

A Hybrid Energy Efficient Protocol for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

We proposed an energy conservation technique called Location Based Topology Control with Sleep Scheduling for ad hoc networks. It uses the feature of both topology control approach and power management approach. Like the topology control approach, it attempts to reduce the transmission power of a node, which is determined from its neighborhood location information. A node goes to sleep state based on the traffic condition as that of power management approach. In the proposed scheme, a node goes to sleep state only when its absence does not create local partition in its neighborhood. We preformed extensive simulation to compare the proposed scheme with existing ones. Simulation results show that the energy consumption is lower with increase in the network lifetime and higher throughput in the proposed scheme

Broadcasting in Wireless Ad hoc Networks

Broadcasting is a process of sending message from one node to all other nodes in a network. It is used commonly in ad hoc networks, for route discovery, content distribution, data disseminations, et cetera. Most of the routing protocols in ad hoc networks use broadcasting as the common mechanism to find path between source and destination. Therefore broadcast protocols are the fundamental building block to understand basic functionality of routing in mobile ad hoc network (MANET). Moreover due to the widespread application of MANET in various scientific and military applications, broadcasting in MANET has pulled attention of many researchers in recent time. Considering its importance and growing popularity, the authors discuss different broadcasting protocols commonly used in ad hoc networks. The chapter also analyzes various issues associated with these protocols.</jats:p

Energy Conservation Issues and Challenges in MANETs

Energy efficiency is a major issue of concern in wireless ad hoc networks as mobile nodes rely on batteries, which are limited sources of energy, and, in many environments, it is quite a cumbersome task to replace or recharge them. Despite the progress made in battery technology, the lifetime of battery powered devices continues to be a key challenge, requiring additional research on efficient design of platforms, protocols, and systems. Many tangible efforts are made by many researchers to reduce the power consumption at protocol level by designing an energy efficient protocol to prolong the lifetime of the networks. The main focus of this chapter is to present a comprehensive analysis of energy efficient techniques in wireless ad hoc networks, integrating various issues and challenges to provide a big picture in this area. This chapter addresses energy management techniques in wireless ad hoc networks, especially in decentralized ad hoc environments.</jats:p
