The Management of Hunting Leases By Rural Landowners
Most of the land in Texas is privately owned and is an important as a source for hunting recreation. Profit maximization theory (PMT) and economic behavioral theory (EBT) were used to explain differences in the net incomes of Texas landowners who sold hunting leases during the 1989-90 hunting season. In 1990, 4,621 landowners who were licensed to sell hunting leases by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department responded to a mail survey. Findings indicated that the statewide median net lease income was $1,100, few landowners considered their leasing operations as businesses, and few practiced intensive management of their operations. Number of acres leased had the most important effect on net lease income. Findings supported aspects of both PMT and EBT
Quantitative insertion-site sequencing (QIseq) for high throughput phenotyping of transposon mutants
Genetic screening using random transposon insertions has been a powerful tool for uncovering biology in prokaryotes, where whole-genome saturating screens have been performed in multiple organisms. In eukaryotes, such screens have proven more problematic, in part because of the lack of a sensitive and robust system for identifying transposon insertion sites. We here describe quantitative insertion-site sequencing, or QIseq, which uses custom library preparation and Illumina sequencing technology and is able to identify insertion sites from both the 5' and 3' ends of the transposon, providing an inbuilt level of validation. The approach was developed using piggyBac mutants in the human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum but should be applicable to many other eukaryotic genomes. QIseq proved accurate, confirming known sites in >100 mutants, and sensitive, identifying and monitoring sites over a >10,000-fold dynamic range of sequence counts. Applying QIseq to uncloned parasites shortly after transfections revealed multiple insertions in mixed populations and suggests that >4000 independent mutants could be generated from relatively modest scales of transfection, providing a clear pathway to genome-scale screens in P. falciparum QIseq was also used to monitor the growth of pools of previously cloned mutants and reproducibly differentiated between deleterious and neutral mutations in competitive growth. Among the mutants with fitness defects was a mutant with a piggyBac insertion immediately upstream of the kelch protein K13 gene associated with artemisinin resistance, implying mutants in this gene may have competitive fitness costs. QIseq has the potential to enable the scale-up of piggyBac-mediated genetics across multiple eukaryotic systems
Quarkonia Measurements with STAR
We report results on quarkonium production from the STAR experiment at the
Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC). J/psi spectra in p+p and Cu+Cu
collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV with transverse momenta in the range of 0.5-14
GeV/c and 5-8 GeV/c, respectively, are presented. We find that for p_T > 5
GeV/c yields in p+p collisions are consistent with those in minimum-bias Cu+Cu
collisions scaled with the respective number of binary nucleon-nucleon
collisions. In this range the nuclear modification factor, R_AA, is measured to
be 0.9+-0.2(stat). For the first time at RHIC, high-p_T J/psi-hadron
correlations were studied in p+p collisions. Implications from our measurements
on J/psi production mechanisms, constraints on open bottom yields, and J/psi
dissociation mechanisms at high-p_T are discussed. In addition, we give a brief
status of measurements of Upsilon production in p+p and Au+Au collisions and
present projections of future quarkonia measurements based on an upgrades to
the STAR detector and increased luminosity achieved through stochastic cooling

Spitzer, Near-Infrared, and Submillimeter Imaging of the Relatively Sparse Young Cluster, Lynds 988e
We present {\it Spitzer} images of the relatively sparse, low luminosity
young cluster L988e, as well as complementary near-infrared (NIR) and
submillimeter images of the region. The cluster is asymmetric, with the western
region of the cluster embedded within the molecular cloud, and the slightly
less dense eastern region to the east of, and on the edge of, the molecular
cloud. With these data, as well as with extant H data of stars
primarily found in the eastern region of the cluster, and a molecular CO
gas emission map of the entire region, we investigate the distribution of
forming young stars with respect to the cloud material, concentrating
particularly on the differences and similarities between the exposed and
embedded regions of the cluster. We also compare star formation in this region
to that in denser, more luminous and more massive clusters already investigated
in our comprehensive multi-wavelength study of young clusters within 1 kpc of

Unique Identification of Lee-Wick Gauge Bosons at Linear Colliders
Grinstein, O'Connell and Wise have recently presented an extension of the
Standard Model (SM), based on the ideas of Lee and Wick (LW), which
demonstrates an interesting way to remove the quadratically divergent
contributions to the Higgs mass induced by radiative corrections. This model
predicts the existence of negative-norm copies of the usual SM fields at the
TeV scale with ghost-like propagators and negative decay widths, but with
otherwise SM-like couplings. In earlier work, it was demonstrated that the LW
states in the gauge boson sector of these models, though easy to observe,
cannot be uniquely identified as such at the LHC. In this paper, we address the
issue of whether or not this problem can be resolved at an collider
with a suitable center of mass energy range. We find that measurements of the
cross section and the left-right polarization asymmetry associated with Bhabha
scattering can lead to a unique identification of the neutral electroweak gauge
