A Newbie at the RDAP Summit, or How I Learned that the RDAP Summit is for Everyone

    Get PDF
This commentary describes the thoughts and perceptions of a first-time attendee to the Research Data Access and Preservation (RDAP) Summit in March 2018. The author describes her initial hesitations to attend this conference as a data librarian from a medium-sized institution. But after attending, she is convinced that the RDAP Summit is for anyone interested in data, including librarians that work at medium- and small-sized institutions. After describing the format of the Summit, the highlights of attending are described, including gathering ideas related to all aspects of research data management, access, and preservation; hearing data management perspectives from outside of academic libraries; networking opportunities for the extrovert and introvert; and opportunities to connect with librarians at similar universities and with similar interests

Wading in before Diving in: Preparing Library Students for Professional Participation

Presentation at the Michigan Academic Library Association Annual Conference at Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant, MI.Library and information science (LIS) students have little opportunity to become familiar with the standards and expectations of a professional conference other than attending an actual conference, which can be intimidating and mysterious. The American Library Association student chapter at the University of Michigan School of Information hosts an annual student-led conference, QuasiCon, which fulfills this unmet need. Started as an ‘unconference’ five years ago, QuasiCon has evolved into a day-long conference that gives LIS students the full conference experience, from submitting a proposal to the student selection committee to networking, all in a supportive environment. By volunteering to serve on the QuasiCon planning committee, LIS students can also develop valuable fundraising, event planning, and project management skills. The whole QuasiCon experience prepares LIS students to immediately participate in the professional library community upon graduation, which advances the entire library profession. Information professionals also benefit by attending QuasiCon because they can scout future talent, recruit for professional organizations, and shepherd budding professionals into the field. This poster will describe QuasiCon’s professional impact for LIS students, such as learning how to compose an engaging conference proposal, as well as for information professionals. At QuasiCon 2016 in early February, attendees will be asked to evaluate the conference, including how it has professional value for themselves. The poster will report this feedback and impart best practices for planning and attending a student-led conference. Visual elements on the poster will include photographs of this year’s conference and anonymous quotes from the evaluation.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/118063/1/MI-ALA_poster2016-5-10 (1).pdfDescription of MI-ALA_poster2016-5-10 (1).pdf : Poste

Taking a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Accessibility Lens to Engineering Librarian Job Postings: Recommendations from an Analysis of Postings from 2018 and 2019

    Get PDF
Objective: While diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) principles and practices have been incorporated into much of academic librarianship, there has been less focus on the job postings. Methods: In order to quantify ways in which DEIA is being integrated into job postings, we analyzed 48 job positions for engineering librarians posted in 2018 and 2019 via deductive thematic analysis, looking for trends in salary and qualifications related to education and academic or professional experience. Results: Of postings that listed a quantitative salary value, salary ranged from 45,000to45,000 to 81,606; the median was $60,750. However, only 33% (n = 16) of positions listed a quantitative salary value. For educational qualifications, we found that 98% of job postings (n = 47) listed a Master’s in Library and Information Science (MLIS) as a required qualification; however, 34% of these postings (n = 16) would accept an equivalent degree in lieu of the MLIS. Additionally, 73% (n = 35) of positions sought candidates with an MLIS and another degree; 91% of these positions (n = 32) wanted the additional degree to be in a science, technology, engineering, and mathematics discipline. For academic or professional experience, 56% of positions (n = 27) sought candidates with previous academic library experience. Conclusions: Using this data, we provide actionable recommendations on how to incorporate DEIA principles into any academic librarian job posting. Our study provides quantitative data and evidence-based recommendations that can be used to make DEIA an integral part of the job postings in academic librarianship

How You Can Write More Inclusive Data Practitioner Job Postings

    Get PDF
The principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion have long been incorporated into many aspects of the data practitioner profession. The hiring process is an exception; it is opaque, stress-inducing, and ultimately reinforces a homogeneous workforce. Job postings are important both as a window into the profession and as the first way that candidates interact with your institution. This Commentary article provides concrete and actionable recommendations on how you can start writing more equitable, diverse, and inclusive job postings at your institution. The substance of this article is based upon a panel presentation at RDAP Summit 2019

Profiling common types of research data and methods published by organic synthesis chemists at the University of Michigan

Objectives: The goal of this research was to create a landscape of organic synthetic chemistry data by manually analyzing a small but representative group of publications. Through this analysis, we hope to gain a better understanding of the various kinds of data and method entities and any associated attributes reported in the literature to inform upcoming metadata standards in this field. Methods: Publications authored by principal investigators (PIs) in the University of Michigan’s chemistry department that self-identify organic chemistry as their research area were collected. Only publications within the scope of organic synthetic chemistry published between 2012-2013 were included for analysis. Publications (including any supplementary information) were carefully examined and data and method information was recorded in the relational database. We identified specific data and method entities and any corresponding attributes, such as metadata and provenance. We compared the published names of the data and method types to the Chemical Methods Ontology (published by the Royal Society of Chemistry) to determine if they correspond. We then created profiles about each data and method type as well as their relationships. Results: Analysis of these publications generated 969 total pieces of data information, 111 different data types, 1308 total pieces of method information and 53 different method types.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/111832/1/DTP_SLA2015Poster_Ye_Joanna_20150610 copy.pd

Introducing library students to library conferences: Reflections on a student-led conference from two recent graduates

Library and information science (LIS) students benefit from an introduction to professional library conferences during their graduate studies. While they are invited to attend library conferences, participating can be intimidating without prior experience. To provide this necessary experience, the ALA student chapter at the University of Michigan School of Information (UMSI) has hosted QuasiCon, an annual student-led conference, for the last five years.https://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/146534/1/2017StuitandThielen_IntroducingLibraryStudentstoLibraryConferences.pdfDescription of 2017StuitandThielen_IntroducingLibraryStudentstoLibraryConferences.pdf : Articl
