    Economic growth and environmental quality: a meta-analysis of environmental Kuznets curve studies

    Meta-analysis is used to investigate systematic variation across Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) studies. Based on 588 observations, modeling results indicate that data characteristics, study methods, estimation techniques, and the chosen environmental quality degradation measure all significantly affect the absence or presence of the EKC, and any predicted income turning points (ITPs). With respect to anthropogenic activity-related greenhouse gases, the evidence does not support the presence of an EKC.environmental Kuznets curve

    South Africa is found in the southernmost part of the African continent. Over half of its 54.8 million people live in urban areas such as Johannesburg and Cape Town, which are the largest urban centers in the country. Some major challenges this country currently faces include the growing drug trade, border disputes, and racial tensions attributed to their history with the apartheid. When it comes to public health, one of their biggest challenges is the HIV/AIDS epidemic, which is currently the largest in the world. Although no cure exists yet, antiretroviral treatments (ARTs) have been highly successful for reducing transmission. Certain populations, such as gay men, sex workers, and drug users, have been identified as having a higher risk for contracting HIV/AIDS. However, many of these groups are often stigmatized, which creates social barriers for being diagnosed and treated. Multi-resource sites that provide a variety of products and services could be established near communities with high-HIV prevalences to make healthcare more accessible and minimize the stigma people feel when seeking out health resources

    Background: The antifungal compound ketoconazole has, in addition to its ability to interfere with fungal ergosterol synthesis, effects upon other enzymes including human CYP3A4, CYP17, lipoxygenase and thromboxane synthetase. In the present study, we have investigated whether ketoconazole affects the cellular uptake and hydrolysis of the endogenous cannabinoid receptor ligand anandamide (AEA). Methodology/Principal Findings: The effects of ketoconazole upon endocannabinoid uptake were investigated using HepG2, CaCo2, PC-3 and C6 cell lines. Fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) activity was measured in HepG2 cell lysates and in intact C6 cells. Ketoconazole inhibited the uptake of AEA by HepG2 cells and CaCo2 cells with IC50 values of 17 and 18 mu M, respectively. In contrast, it had modest effects upon AEA uptake in PC-3 cells, which have a low expression of FAAH. In cell-free HepG2 lysates, ketoconazole inhibited FAAH activity with an IC50 value (for the inhibitable component) of 34 mu M. Conclusions/Significance: The present study indicates that ketoconazole can inhibit the cellular uptake of AEA at pharmacologically relevant concentrations, primarily due to its effects upon FAAH. Ketoconazole may be useful as a template for the design of dual-action FAAH/CYP17 inhibitors as a novel strategy for the treatment of prostate cancer

    Evaluation of three Polymerase chain reaction tests targeting morphological transforming region II, UL-83 gene and glycoprotein O gene for the detection of Human Cytomegalovirus genome in clinical specimens of immunocompromised patients in Chennai, India

    BACKGROUND: Human Cytomegalovirus (HCMV) continues to be an important cause of morbidity and occasional mortality in immunocompromised patients. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is the most sensitive and commonly used method for the assessment of HCMV infection in the immunocompromised patients at risk from severe associated clinical manifestations. However, there is little consistency in the qualitative PCR used for different regions of HCMV genome. Therefore, the performance of three Qualitative PCR tests to detect HCMV genome in clinical specimens from immunocompromised patients was evaluated. With pp65 antigenemia assay as the "gold standard", nested PCR for morphological transforming region II (mtr II) and glycoprotein O (gO) gene and uniplex PCR for UL 83 gene were applied on 92 consecutive clinical specimens obtained from 74 immunocompromised patients with clinically suspected HCMV disease. Virus isolation was attempted on 12 clinical specimens from six pp65 antigenemia positive patients. Based on the pp 65 antigenemia results as "gold standard", the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value for each PCR was calculated. RESULTS: The PCR targeting mtr II region showed a higher sensitivity (100%) and negative predictive value (100%) than the other two PCRs in detecting HCMV DNA from clinical specimens obtained from different immunocompromised patient population of Chennai region, India. CONCLUSION: The results suggests that the optimal method of detection of HCMV DNA could be achieved by PCR using primer sequences targeting mtr II region of genome of HCMV in Chennai region, India

    EMPLOYMENT JOURNEY OF TECHNICAL TEACHERS: STORIES TO TELL

    This study sought to examine and evaluate the difficulties that Technical Teachers encountered in their search for employment, from obtaining licensure and competing with other graduates to securing the actual job itself. The study utilized thematic analysis and the descriptive phenomenological approach to explain the common experiences of the twelve graduates of the Bachelor of Technical Teacher Education program. This research delved into the experiences of these graduates as they navigated the job market. The past qualitative study highlighted the following: technical teachers faced significant challenges in securing employment. It was important to understand these challenges and support future technical teachers. The study also examined the challenges they faced, the coping strategies they adopted, and the insightful advice they provided for navigating the road to a fruitful teaching career. The recurring themes based on participants' coping strategies with the challenges included investing in professional development opportunities, tapping into support systems, possessing a positive mindset, and keeping the faith burning. The recurring themes based on participants' insights that they wanted to share with their fellow Technical Teacher students and graduates regarding what they had learned about their employability journey included the importance of college training and internships, the need for continuous learning in the field, and the vitality of working hard in the process. The difficulties and successes that Technical Teachers faced were highlighted by these recurrent themes. Additionally, more research on this topic could be conducted in the future to look more closely at the areas covered by the Technical Teacher Education program.  Article visualizations

    Following the excited state relaxation dynamics of indole and 5-hydroxyindole using time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy

    Time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy was used to obtain new information about the dynamics of electronic relaxation in gas-phase indole and 5-hydroxyindole following UV excitation with femtosecond laser pulses centred at 249 nm and 273 nm. Our analysis of the data was supported by ab initio calculations at the coupled cluster and complete-active-space self-consistent-field levels. The optically bright 1La and 1Lb electronic states of 1\u3c0\u3c0* character and spectroscopically dark and dissociative 1\u3c0\u3c3* states were all found to play a role in the overall relaxation process. In both molecules we conclude that the initially excited 1La state decays non-adiabatically on a sub 100 fs timescale via two competing pathways, populating either the subsequently long-lived 1Lb state or the 1\u3c0\u3c3* state localised along the N-H coordinate, which exhibits a lifetime on the order of 1 ps. In the case of 5-hydroxyindole, we conclude that the 1\u3c0\u3c3* state localised along the O-H coordinate plays little or no role in the relaxation dynamics at the two excitation wavelengths studied.Peer reviewed: YesNRC publication: Ye

    Novel Linkage of Individual and Geographic Data to Study Firearm Violence

    Firearm violence is the end result of a causative web of individual-level and geographic risk factors. Few, if any, studies of firearm violence have been able to simultaneously determine the population-based relative risks that individuals experience as a result of what they were doing at a specific point in time and where they were, geographically, at a specific point in time. This paper describes the linkage of individual and geographic data that was undertaken as part of a population-based case-control study of firearm violence in Philadelphia. New methods and applications of these linked data relevant to researchers and policymakers interested in firearm violence are also discussed

    Segmentation of Optic Disc in Fundus Images using Convolutional Neural Networks for Detection of Glaucoma

    The condition of the vascular network of human eye is an important diagnostic factor in ophthalmology. Its segmentation in fundus imaging is a difficult task due to various anatomical structures like blood vessel, optic cup, optic disc, macula and fovea. Blood vessel segmentation can assist in the detection of pathological changes which are possible indicators for arteriosclerosis, retinopathy, microaneurysms and macular degeneration. The segmentation of optic disc and optic cup from retinal images is used to calculate an important indicator, cup-to disc ratio( CDR) accurately to help the professionals in the detection of Glaucoma in fundus images.In this proposed work, an automated segmentation of anatomical structures in fundus images such as blood vessel and optic disc is done using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) . A Convolutional Neural Network is a composite of multiple elementary processing units, each featuring several weighted inputs and one output, performing convolution of input signals with weights and transforming the outcome with some form of nonlinearity. The units are arranged in rectangular layers (grids), and their locations in a layer correspond to pixels in an input image. The spatial arrangement of units is the primary characteristics that makes CNNs suitable for processing visual information; the other features are local connectivity, parameter sharing and pooling of hidden units. The advantage of CNN is that it can be trained repeatedly so more features can be found. An average accuracy of 95.64% is determined in the classification of blood vessel or not. Optic cup is also segmented from the optic disc by Fuzzy C Means Clustering (FCM). This proposed algorithm is tested on a sample of hospital images and CDR value is determined. The obtained values of CDR is compared with the given values of the sample images and hence the performance of proposed system in which Convolutional Neural Networks for segmentation is employed, is excellent in automated detection of healthy and Glaucoma images
