    Summing Radiative Corrections to the Effective Potential

    When one uses the Coleman-Weinberg renormalization condition, the effective potential VV in the massless ϕ44\phi_4^4 theory with O(N) symmetry is completely determined by the renormalization group functions. It has been shown how the (p+1)(p+1) order renormalization group function determine the sum of all the N^{\mbox{\scriptsize p}}LL order contribution to VV to all orders in the loop expansion. We discuss here how, in addition to fixing the N^{\mbox{\scriptsize p}}LL contribution to VV, the (p+1)(p+1) order renormalization group functions also can be used to determine portions of the N^{\mbox{\scriptsize p+n}}LL contributions to VV. When these contributions are summed to all orders, the singularity structure of \mcv is altered. An alternate rearrangement of the contributions to VV in powers of lnϕ\ln \phi, when the extremum condition V(ϕ=v)=0V^\prime (\phi = v) = 0 is combined with the renormalization group equation, show that either v=0v = 0 or VV is independent of ϕ\phi. This conclusion is supported by showing the LL, \cdots, N4^4LL contributions to VV become progressively less dependent on ϕ\phi.Comment: 16 pages; added 2 figures and 2 tables; references revise

    Frequency reconfigurable patch antenna for 4G LTE applications

    A compact printed multi-band frequency reconfigurable patch antenna for 4G LTE applications is presented in this paper (50 x 60 x 1.6 mm3). The antenna consists of W-shaped and Inverted-U shaped patch lines connected in a Tree-shape on the front side of the antenna. The back-side of the antenna contains a 90°-tilted T-shaped strip connected with an Inverted-L shaped strip which is shorted with a patch on the front side for increasing the electrical length to cover lower frequency bands. Frequency reconfigurability is achieved by inserting three switches i.e., PIN diodes. The most critical part of this work is the designing of RLC-based DC line circuits for providing the DC biasing to the PIN diodes used as switches and inserting them at optimum locations. This antenna is reconfigurable among eight different 4G LTE frequency bands including 0.9 GHz, 1.4 GHz, 1.5 GHz, 1.6 GHz, 1.7 GHz, 1.8 GHz, 2.6 GHz, 3.5 GHz and WLAN band 2.5 GHz. The antenna exhibits different radiation patterns having a different direction of peak gain at different frequencies and for different switching combinations. The antenna is simulated with CST, and a prototype is fabricated to compare the measured and simulated results with good accuracy

    Designing a web-application to support home-based care of childhood CKD stages 3-5: Qualitative study of family and professional preferences

    Background: There is a lack of online, evidence-based information and resources to support home-based care of childhood CKD stages 3-5. Methods. Qualitative interviews were undertaken with parents, patients and professionals to explore their views on content of the proposed online parent information and support (OPIS) web-application. Data were analysed using Framework Analysis, guided by the concept of Self-efficacy. Results: 32 parents, 26 patients and 12 professionals were interviewed. All groups wanted an application that explains, demonstrates, and enables parental clinical care-giving, with condition-specific, continously available, reliable, accessible material and a closed communication system to enable contact between families living with CKD. Professionals advocated a regularly updated application to empower parents to make informed health-care decisions. To address these requirements, key web-application components were defined as: (i) Clinical care-giving support (information on treatment regimens, video-learning tools, condition-specific cartoons/puzzles, and a question and answer area) and (ii) Psychosocial support for care-giving (social-networking, case studies, managing stress, and enhancing families' health-care experiences). Conclusions: Developing a web-application that meets parents' information and support needs will maximise its utility, thereby augmenting parents' self-efficacy for CKD caregiving, and optimising outcomes. Self-efficacy theory provides a schema for how parents' self-efficacy beliefs about management of their child's CKD could potentially be promoted by OPIS. © 2014 Swallow et al.; licensee BioMed Central Ltd

    Can the Renormalization Group Improved Effective Potential be used to estimate the Higgs Mass in the Conformal Limit of the Standard Model?

    We consider the effective potential VV in the standard model with a single Higgs doublet in the limit that the only mass scale μ\mu present is radiatively generated. Using a technique that has been shown to determine VV completely in terms of the renormalization group (RG) functions when using the Coleman-Weinberg (CW) renormalization scheme, we first sum leading-log (LL) contributions to VV using the one loop RG functions, associated with five couplings (the top quark Yukawa coupling xx, the quartic coupling of the Higgs field yy, the SU(3) gauge coupling zz, and the SU(2)×U(1)SU(2) \times U(1) couplings rr and ss). We then employ the two loop RG functions with the three couplings xx, yy, zz to sum the next-to-leading-log (NLL) contributions to VV and then the three to five loop RG functions with one coupling yy to sum all the N2LL...N4LLN^2LL...N^4LL contributions to VV. In order to compute these sums, it is necessary to convert those RG functions that have been originally computed explicitly in the minimal subtraction (MS) scheme to their form in the CW scheme. The Higgs mass can then be determined from the effective potential: the LLLL result is mH=219  GeV/c2m_{H}=219\;GeV/c^2 decreases to mH=188  GeV/c2m_{H}=188\;GeV/c^2 at N2LLN^{2}LL order and mH=163  GeV/c2m_{H}=163\;GeV/c^2 at N4LLN^{4}LL order. No reasonable estimate of mHm_H can be made at orders VNLLV_{NLL} or VN3LLV_{N^3LL}. This is taken to be an indication that this mechanism for spontaneous symmetry breaking is in fact viable, though one in which there is slow convergence towards the actual value of mHm_H.
