Factors affecting readiness toward online learning among medical students during COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia
The rapid spread of transmission COVID-19 leads to the government applied a regulation to close schools and colleges for a while, as an effort to stop the spread. It also has an impact on medical student education that can be threatened by their educational system. This study identified and analyzed the factors affecting the readiness of medical students for studying online during the COVID-19 pandemic. This was an observational analytic study with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 3,331 respondents from all over Indonesia participated in this study. An online questionnaire by Indonesian Medical Student Senate Association (Ikatan Senat Mahasiswa Kedokteran Indonesia/ISMKI) was used and distributed from April 9th, 2020 to June 21st, 2020. A Chi-square test (alternative: Fisher exact test) and logistic regression with significance alpha=0.05 used to analyze. The university origin (p=0.031, OR=1.130 (1.012â1.263)), internet connections (p=0.001, OR=1.387 (1.134â1.696)), and learning interaction models (p<0.000, OR=0.463 (0.384â0.558)) were affected medical studentsâ readiness for online learning
Medical crisis during pandemic: Career preferences change in medical student
The COVID-19 pandemic is a major threat to global education. Incidental emotions of fear and anxiety during pandemic have unconsciously influenced preference and outcome about their future career. This study aimed to assess the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic towards career preference change in medical students. A total of 1,027 responses from all over the medical students in Indonesia were collected from an online questionnaire which was broadcasted through social media from 14th July 2020â21st July 2020. This study was using Fear of COVID-19 Scale (FCV-19S) and Depression Anxiety Stress-Scale-21 (DASS-21) to assess fear of COVID-19, stress, anxiety, and depression. Out of 1,027 respondents, 44.6% had stressed, 47.8% had anxiety, and 18.5% had depression with an average FCV-19S score was 17.1. The result showed that the fear and anxiety of COVID-19 during the pandemic had associated significantly with the career decisions in medical students (p=<0.05). Indonesian policymakers had to keep in mind that the fear of the COVID-19 pandemic in medical students is due to the high mortality COVID-19 cases of health workers in Indonesia. Health workers need adequate working conditions and specific protection, this requires prompt attention from stakeholders
The use of peer role-play in doctor-patient communication skills training for medical students: A systematic review
The quality of communication is directly related to patient satisfaction and can influence health outcomes. However, most doctors still have poor communication skills. A systematic literature search in PubMed, Cochrane, and Science Direct was conducted to retrieve studies reporting the use of peer role-play (PRP) for doctor-patient communication skills training in medical students. The quality of each study was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) critical appraisal checklist. A total of 1,620 studies were obtained from electronic database search and screening of reference lists. After removing irrelevant studies and duplicates, one randomized control trial (RCT) and eight quasi-experimental studies were included in this systematic review. Peer role-play was perceived to be as useful as simulated patients (SP) training methods with comparable post-intervention objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) scores. Majority of students preferred PRP for learning communication skills over didactic lectures. The limitation of this review is the scarcity of eligible studies, high variability in the PRP programs across studies, and the lack of grey literature included. Peer role-play might be a cost-effective method to improve doctor-patient communication skills with comparable results (studentâs perception and OSCE scores) with the expensive use of simulated patients. However, further study is needed to support this statement
Barriers and challenges for primary care service in the COVID-19 pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic is such a barrier for health systems around the world including Indonesia. Primary care is the first-line in controlling the pandemic at the community level, but there are many barriers and challenges faced by doctors during the service that are not fully recognized. This aimed to distinguish barriers and challenges in health centers and/clinics amid the COVID-19 widespread. This was qualitative study with a phenomenological approach. As much 44 health centers/clinical specialists interviewed in October 2020. Then, the data categorization method/coding and content analysis used. There were three themes related to the barriers and challenges confronted by specialists in health centers/clinics, specifically barriers and challenges based on service management, environment, and individuals. The barriers and challenges confronted are related to changes within the consultation flow, a diminished number of patient visits, limited supplies of personal protective equipment (PPE), patient states of mind and behavior within the confront of a pandemic, and progressively heavier burdens and duties for doctors. It is necessary to provide specific, valid, and right-on-target knowledge in improving community behavior in efforts to prevent COVID-19 infection and the government's important role to be more concerned about the future of health workers
