    The Use of Schemata in Reading Comprehension: A Case of Learners' Reading Problems. Schemata have an important role in the process of reading. It is almost impossible for a person to read without utilizing schemata. This study aimed to find learners' reading problem in terms of using sche­mata. A group of second year students of English Department of State University of Malang were in­volved in this study. As a case study, an interview, observation, and test were used to collect the data. The study reveals that the main reading problems were lack of background knowledge, over-reliance on background knowledge, and lack of background knowledge activation. In the process of reading, learn­ers' background knowledge should be activated. Without optimal activation, the process of reading does not reach satisfactory results. It is also suggested that learners should not be over confident in get­ting the meaning from the text. Over-reliance on background knowledge might lead to misinterpretation

    Pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris sebagai Muatan Lokal pada Sekolah Dasar di Propinsi Lampung

    Bahasa Inggris diajarkan di beberapa sekolah dasar di seluruh Indonesia termasuk di Propinsi Lampung. Kebijakan ini dilaksanakan sesuai dengan amanat yang terkandung dalam Kurikulum Sekolah Dasar 1994. Kurikulum ini mencantumkan pelajaran muatan lokal yang sesuai dengan keadaan dan kebutuhan lingkungan dan yang bersifat kedaerahan. Setiap sekolah dapat menentukan kebijakan untuk menyelenggarakan beberapa mata pelajaran termasuk diantaranya mata pelajaran Bahasa Inggeris. Kurikulum 2013 sebaliknya tidak menganjurkan bahasa Inggris diberikan di SD. Pelaksanaan diserahkan ke masing-masing sekolah didaerah, sebagai ekstra kurikuler. Tulisan ini menganalsis keberadaan dan pelaksanaan mata pelajaran Bahasa Inggeris sebagai muatan lokal di Propinsi Lampung berdasarkan hasil sirvey dari beberapa guru dan pengambil kebijakan tentang muatan lokal. Diantaranya membahas apakah Bahasa Inggeris layak atau tidak layak diajarkan di Sekolah Dasar di Propinsi Lampung. Beberapa argumentasi dan teori dipaparkan untuk mendukung kedua argumentasi itu. Makalah ini merekomendasikan bahwa Bahasa Inggeris dapat diajarkan di Sekolah Dasar di Propinsi Lampung apabila beberapa persyaratan teoritis dan praktis dapat dipenuhi

    Communicative Language Teaching Paradigm

    The paradigm shift has occurred since more than 40 years. This shift covers almost all fields of science. As a tradition of revolutionary thinking, a paradigm shift also occurred in education, particularly in language education. This article contains a review of the process of paradigm shift in a communicative language teaching, namely the shift from positivism to post positivism. This discussion includes eight aspects of change, among others, Learner Autonomy, the essence a Social Learning, Curriculum Integration, Focus on Meaning, Diversity, Thinking Skills, Alternative Measurement, and Teachers as Co-LearnersIn fact the eighth aspects of paradigm were not fully implemented thoroughly in public education, particularly in the field of second language. Educators and other stakeholders have been trying to understand and implement the change by way of partial, rather than a holistic manner. The main purpose of this paper is to show that this change is important to improve the quality of learning a second language

    Increasing Students’ Reading Comprehension Through Make a Match Type of Cooperative Learning

    Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui apakah terdapat sebuah perbedaan yang signifikan dari pencapaian pemahaman membaca siswa sebelum dan setelah diajarkan menggunakan tipe make a match pembelajaran koperatif dan mengetahui apakah terdapat sebuah peningkatan dari pemahaman membaca siswa setelah diajarkan menggunakan tipe make a match pembelajaran koperatif. Sampel dari penelitian ini adalah kelas X1 dari kelas sepuluh SMAN 1 Seputih Banyak pada tahun 2013/2014. Penelitian ini diterapkan dengan menggunakan satu kelompok desain pretest posttest. Hasil dari pembelajaran membaca dengan menggunakan tipe make a match  pembelajaran koperatif menunjukan bahwa terdapat sebuah perbedaan yang signifikan dalam pemahaman membaca siswa (p < 0.05, p= 0.00). nilai rata-rata posttest (64.79) lebih tinggi daripada nilai rata-rata pretest (51.48), dan memiliki peningkatan 13.31. Hal tersebut berarti bahwa terdapat sebuah peningkatan dari pencapaian pemahaman membaca siswa setelah diajarkan menggunakan tipe make a match pembelajaran koperatif.The aims of this research were to find out whether there was a significant difference of students’ reading comprehension achievement before and after being taught through make a match type of cooperative learning and to find if there was an increase of students’ reading comprehension after the instruction. The sample of this research was class X1 of the first grade of SMA in the year 2013/2014. The research applied one group pre-test post-test design. The result of the reading study by using make a match type of cooperative learning showed that there was a significant difference on students’ reading comprehension since (p < 0.05, p = 0.00). The average of post-test score (64.79) was higher than that of pre-test (51.48), and it has gain 13.31. It means that there is an increase of students’ reading comprehension achievement after being taught through make a match type of cooperative learning.

    Increasing Students’ Speaking Ability Through Persuasive Group Presentation

    Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan perbedaan signifikan pada prestasi berbicara siswa setelah diajarkan melalui teknik persuasive group presentation, mengetahui apakah persuasive group presentation dapat meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa pada aspek kosa kata, kelancaran, pemahaman, pelafalan, dan tata bahasa, serta menganalisa proses belajar mengajar dengan menggunakan teknik tersebut. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penggabungan antara kuantitatif dan kualitatif. Sampel dipilih secara khusus berdasarkan tingginya nilai bahasa Inggris yaitu kelas XI IPA1. Hasil menyimpulkan bahwa adanya perbedaan prestasi belajar siswa secara signifikan pada level 0.05 karena t-ratio lebih besar dari t-table (5746 > 2045), kemampuan berbicara siswa meningkat setelah mereka diajarkan melalui teknik persuasive group presentation, dan proses belajar mengajar melalui teknik tersebut telah berjalan lancar meskipun adanya beberapa masalah yang dihadapi oleh siswa dan guru bahasa Inggris.The aims of this study are to find out significant difference of students’ speaking achievement after being taught through persuasive group presentation technique, whether or not persuasive group presentation can be used to increase students’ speaking aspects in terms of vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, pronunciation, grammar and analyze teaching learning process by using current technique. This research used mix method between quantitative and qualitative. The sample was chosen purposively based on the highest score that was XI IPA1. The results are there is significant difference in level 0.05 because t-ratio is higher than t-table (5746 > 2045), students’ achievement was increasing after they taught through persuasive group presentation technique, and teaching learning process by using current technique ran well although there are problems which faced by students and English teacher.

    The Correlation Between Students' Vocabulary and Grammar Mastery and Reading Comprehension

    Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan apakah ada hubungan antara penguasaan kosakata, tata bahasa dan pemahaman membaca siswa. Desain penelitian ini kuantitatif menggunakan ex post facto designs. Populasi dari penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas dua di SMAN 1 Tumijajar. Peneliti menggunakan sampel penelitian sebanyak 35 siswa. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah tes kosakata, tata bahasa, dan pemahaman membaca. Data yang terkumpul dianalisa menggunakan Pearson Product Moment Correlation di SPSS 16.0. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa nilai r dari penguasaan kosakata and pemahaman membaca, penguasaan tata bahasa dan pemahaman membaca, dan penguasaan kosakata, tata bahasa dan pemahaman membaca .839, 726, dan .870. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa ada hubungan yang significant antara penguasaan kosakata, tatabahasa dan pemahaman membaca siswa. Semakin tinggi penguasaan kosakata dan tatabahasa, maka semakin tinggi pemahaman membaca siswa. The purpose of this study is to find out whether there is significant correlation between students' vocabulary and grammar mastery and their achievement in reading comprehension. This was quantitative research applied ex post facto designs. The population of this study was the second grade students of SMAN 1 Tumijajar. The researcher used sample consist of 35 students. The instrument of this research was in the form of vocabulary and grammar mastery test and reading comprehension test. The data collected were analyzed by using Pearson Product Moment Correlation in SPSS 16.0. The result showed that r of students' vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension, grammar mastery and students' reading comprehension, and students' vocabulary and grammar mastery and their achievement in reading comprehension were .839, .726, and .870. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is correlation between students' vocabulary and grammar mastery and their achievement in reading comprehension.     Comparison Between Students\u27 Vocabulary Through Crossword Puzzle and Riddle Game

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan (i) perbedaan kemampuan kosa kata siswa yang diajar dengan teknik, (ii) tanggapan siswa tentang teknik pengajaran tersebut dan materi yang diberikan. Subjek penelitian ini adalah 48 siswa di SMP. Hasil uji menunjukkan bahwa terdapat perbedaan kemampuan kosa kata siswa yang diajar dengan teknik crossword puzzle dan riddle game dengan tingkat signifikan 0.012<0.05. dan hasil dari tanggapan siswa dengan tingkat signifikan 0.04<0.05. Para siswa setuju bahwa kedua teknik game dapat meningkatkan kemampuan kosa kata dalam process pembelajaran. Berdasarkan hal ini, dapat disimpulkan bahwa teknik crossword puzzle dan riddle game adalah teknik yang efektif untuk meningkatkan kosa kata siswa dan kemampuan berbahasa inggris.This study is aimed at finding out (i) whether there is statistically significant difference of the students\u27 achievement of vocabulary after the students were taught through crossword puzzle and riddle game, and (ii) the students\u27 appraisal of the techniques. The subjects were 48 students of junior high school. The result showed that there was a statistically significant difference of the students\u27 vocabulary achievement between crossword puzzle and riddle game with the significant level 0.012 < 0.05 and the result of students\u27 appraisal with the significant level 0.04 < 0.05. The students stated that the techniques could improve their vocabulary. This suggests that crossword puzzle and riddle games facilitate the students to improve their achievement in vocabulary

    An Analysis of Students' Anxiety in the Implementation of Reciprocal Teaching in Reading

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meneliti persepsi siswa dalam kecemasan dari pengajaran reciprocal. Penelitian ini adalah deskripsi kualitatif yang dilaksanakan di kelas XI MIA 1. Ada 11 siswa yang dipilih sebagai narasumber saat wawancara. Mereka dipilih berdasakan observasi, jenis kelamin, dan nilai ujian membaca. Data diambil melalui observasi dan wawancara. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan permasalahan bahasa dianggap menjadi masalah yang penting karena ini dapat mempengaruhi siswa mempunyai rasa kecemasan yang tinggi saat menggunakan empat strategi instruksional dari pengajaran reciprocal. Oleh karena itu, guru disarankan untuk lebih membimbing dan mengawasi siswa saat mengajar membaca menggunakan teknik reciprocal, karena guru mempunyai peranan penting dalam mengurangi dan mengontrol kecemasan siswa.This research was aimed to explore the students' perceptions of anxiety in reciprocal teaching. This research was descriptive qualitative research. The research participants of this research wereXI MIA 1 class.The subjects were 11 representatives of the students as the interviewees. It was chosen based on observation, genre, and the score of reading test. The data were taken from the observation and interview. The results showed language problems were the main aspects which influenced the students to have high anxiety while performing the four instructional strategies of reciprocal teaching. This suggests teachers should guide and control student in teaching reading process through reciprocal teaching because they play a prominent role in alleviating and controlling students' anxiety
