Controlled fabrication of single electron transistors from single-walled carbon nanotubes
Single electron transistors (SETs) are fabricated by placing single walled
carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) on a 100 nm wide local Al/Al2O3 bottom gate and then
contacting with Pd electrodes. Coulomb oscillations up to 125 K were observed
and charging energies of 12-15 meV with level spacing of ~5 meV were measured
from the Couloumb diamond, in agreement with a dot size of ~100 nm, implying
that the local gate defines the dot size by bending SWNT at the edges and
controls its operation. This "mechanical template" approach may facilitate
large scale fabrication of SET devices using SWNT.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Escherichia coli O157:H7 in Malta for the first time
The emergence of E coli O157:H7 in Malta is a sign of the times. It represents one of the newly emerging infections associated with food. The first two documented cases of E coli 0157:H7 infection in Malta occurred in July and August, 1996. Food types classically incriminated were surveyed by the Department of Public Health. Epidemiological investigation aimed to trace the environmental sources of infection.• Microbiology was performed jointly by diagnostic and public health laboratories. Facts about infection and control of the disease are highlighted with a view to alerting local practitioners to the condition.peer-reviewe

They offer a conceptual schema for coach development, containing both supervision and coaching as a discussion point for coaches to consider
Attributing Creativity
Three kinds of things may be creative: persons, processes, and products. The standard definition of creativity, used nearly by consensus in psychological research, focuses specifically on products and says that a product is creative if and only if it is new and valuable. We argue that at least one further condition is necessary for a product to be creative: it must have been produced by the right kind of process. We argue furthermore that this point has an interesting epistemological implication: when you judge a product to be creative--attributing creativity--you are not just judging it to be new and valuable. Even if you did not witness how it was produced, you are also making a judgement about how it was produced
Morphosyntactic development of Bangla-speaking preschool children
This study examines the morphosyntactic development, specifically verb morphology, of typically-developing Bangla-speaking children between the ages of two and four. Three verb forms were studied: the Present Simple, the Present Progressive and the Past Progressive. The study was motivated by the observations that reliable language-specific developmental information is not available in Bangla and that properties of these verb forms render them suitable for exploring how language typology contributes to the learnability of verb morphology in emerging child language. Children's performance on these forms was assessed through form-specific language elicitation tasks and spontaneous language samples. Three stages of development of verb morphology were identified by consideration of accuracy of production and error types
The Stochastic Dynamics of Rectangular and V-shaped Atomic Force Microscope Cantilevers in a Viscous Fluid and Near a Solid Boundary
Using a thermodynamic approach based upon the fluctuation-dissipation theorem
we quantify the stochastic dynamics of rectangular and V-shaped microscale
cantilevers immersed in a viscous fluid. We show that the stochastic cantilever
dynamics as measured by the displacement of the cantilever tip or by the angle
of the cantilever tip are different. We trace this difference to contributions
from the higher modes of the cantilever. We find that contributions from the
higher modes are significant in the dynamics of the cantilever tip-angle. For
the V-shaped cantilever the resulting flow field is three-dimensional and
complex in contrast to what is found for a long and slender rectangular
cantilever. Despite this complexity the stochastic dynamics can be predicted
using a two-dimensional model with an appropriately chosen length scale. We
also quantify the increased fluid dissipation that results as a V-shaped

Inflashoe:A Shape Changing Shoe to Control Underfoot Pressure
We present Inflashoe, an interactive shoe that uses a pneumatic system to change the inflation level within the sole. This allows the shoe to adapt its shape to different surfaces and users' foot morphology, or to alter users' gait. Inflashoe can not only change the overall inflation, but can also individually control the inflation of the back and front of the insole, creating different levels of elevation across the shoe when needed. In this paper we describe our prototype implementation and present the results of a preliminary evaluation study. We show that 85% of participants found Inflashoe to be equal to or more comfortable than their ordinary shoes, and that nearly 60% of them would prefer comfort to style. In the light of the results, we then discuss the potential applications of Inflashoe, in particular targeting specific kinds of pain or injury
