Mean Field Description of the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect Near
The nature of Mean Field Solutions to the Equations of Motion of the
Chern--Simons Landau--Ginsberg (CSLG) description of the Fractional Quantum
Hall Effect (FQHE) is studied. Beginning with the conventional description of
this model at some chemical potential and magnetic field
corresponding to a ``special'' filling fraction
() we show that a deviation of in a finite range
around does not change the Mean Field solution and thus the mean
density of particles in the model. This result holds not only for the lowest
energy Mean Field solution but for the vortex excitations as well. The vortex
configurations do not depend on in a finite range about in this
model. However when ) the
lowest energy Mean Field solution describes a condensate of vortices (or
antivortices). We give numerical examples of vortex and antivortex
configurations and discuss the range of and over which the system
of vortices is dilute.Comment: Revtex document; 12 pages and 4 postscript figures in a fil
Adolescent Exposure to Food Advertising on Television
Summarizes a study of the link between adolescents' exposure to television advertising for healthy and unhealthy foods and rates of obesity. Compares data by type of food product and race/ethnicity
Internal Controls Possessed by Small Business Owners
On average, a small business could lose 150,000 loss could be detrimental to the small business, causing the business to close. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore the internal controls small business owners apply to detect and prevent fraud from occurring in the business. The population for the study consisted of 3 small business owners located in Hartsville, South Carolina who implemented effective internal fraud controls in their business. The conceptual framework guiding the study was the fraud triangle theory. Data were collected and triangulated through semistructured interviews, company internal control policy and procedure documents, the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission internal control framework, and the Small Business Administration internal control good practices. Data were analyzed through coding. There were 3 themes which emerged in relation to addressing the central research question: cash collection, separation of duties, and attentiveness and awareness. The findings could contribute to positive social change by providing best practices for small business owners to mitigate the components of the fraud triangle and subsequently decrease, if not eliminate, fraud from occurring in small businesses
Best Practices in Instructional Design for Distance Learning Information Literacy Courses
Join a collaborative team comprised of an instructional designer and an instructor-librarian as they lead a workshop to share best practices in instructional design for online/distance information literacy (IL) courses. Participants will develop an action plan to help them construct an online course template that will boost instructor presence; improve accessibility; facilitate interaction; and positively affect student learning experiences
Disconnect Between Literature and Libraries: The Availability of Mentoring Programs for Academic Librarians
Our goal in this study was to determine the likelihood that a recent graduate entering his or her first professional position or a transitioning librarian would have access to formal mentoring programs. The study suggests that, while formal mentoring is valuable, more emphasis needs to be focused on creating formal mentoring programs to make them more widely available
There\u27s No Stopping Us Now! Why Systematic Staff Training Keeps the Organization Moving Forward
Libraries have shifted from repositories of materials to centers of innovation and community-based learning. Many library services changed to accommodate the shift; some staff find this difficult and perplexing and it has led to technological wariness and resistance to change. To address this we developed a continuous in-house professional development program. We will discuss barriers and enablers to establishing a program and unintended benefits, such as reducing perceived inequalities among staff, increasing trust, and empowering staff
Ernst Lothar
Zwischenfach – a Distinct Voice Type: A Study of Fach through Specific Roles in the Works of Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss
The term Zwischenfach has been described in a small number of papers, with the emphasis on its paradoxes and its lack of research. However, in none of these papers is there concrete evidence that the Zwischenfach should be considered a separate voice category rather than simply an “in-between” Fach. The goal of this paper is to explore the thesis that the Zwischenfach should be considered a separate and distinct Fach. Supporting evidence includes studies on tessitura, range, vowel usage, and the orchestration of roles, as examined in the arias of five characters in the operas of Wagner and Strauss. Establishing the Zwischenfach as a distinct vocal identity will lead to improved and more focused training of young Zwischenfach singers and better alignment of roles and voices in the casting process
