Elemental Abundances of Kepler Objects of Interest in APOGEE. I. Two Distinct Orbital Period Regimes Inferred from Host Star Iron Abundances

The Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) has observed \sim600 transiting exoplanets and exoplanet candidates from \textit{Kepler} (Kepler Objects of Interest, KOIs), most with \geq18 epochs. The combined multi-epoch spectra are of high signal-to-noise (typically \geq100) and yield precise stellar parameters and chemical abundances. We first confirm the ability of the APOGEE abundance pipeline, ASPCAP, to derive reliable [Fe/H] and effective temperatures for FGK dwarf stars -- the primary \textit{Kepler} host stellar type -- by comparing the ASPCAP-derived stellar parameters to those from independent high-resolution spectroscopic characterizations for 221 dwarf stars in the literature. With a sample of 282 close-in (P<100P<100 days) KOIs observed in the APOGEE KOI goal program, we find a correlation between orbital period and host star [Fe/H] characterized by a critical period, PcritP_\mathrm{crit}= 8.34.1+0.18.3^{+0.1}_{-4.1} days, below which small exoplanets orbit statistically more metal-enriched host stars. This effect may trace a metallicity dependence of the protoplanetary disk inner-radius at the time of planet formation or may be a result of rocky planet ingestion driven by inward planetary migration. We also consider that this may trace a metallicity dependence of the dust sublimation radius, but find no statistically significant correlation with host TeffT_\mathrm{eff} and orbital period to support such a claim.Comment: 18 Pages, Accepted to A

Chemical abundance gradients from open clusters in the Milky Way disk: results from the APOGEE survey

Metallicity gradients provide strong constraints for understanding the chemical evolution of the Galaxy. We report on radial abundance gradients of Fe, Ni, Ca, Si, and Mg obtained from a sample of 304 red-giant members of 29 disk open clusters, mostly concentrated at galactocentric distances between ~8 - 15 kpc, but including two open clusters in the outer disk. The observations are from the APOGEE survey. The chemical abundances were derived automatically by the ASPCAP pipeline and these are part of the SDSS III Data Release 12. The gradients, obtained from least squares fits to the data, are relatively flat, with slopes ranging from -0.026 to -0.033 dex/kpc for the alpha-elements [O/H], [Ca/H], [Si/H] and [Mg/H] and -0.035 dex/kpc and -0.040 dex/kpc for [Fe/H] and [Ni/H], respectively. Our results are not at odds with the possibility that metallicity ([Fe/H]) gradients are steeper in the inner disk (R_GC ~7 - 12 kpc) and flatter towards the outer disk. The open cluster sample studied spans a significant range in age. When breaking the sample into age bins, there is some indication that the younger open cluster population in our sample (log age < 8.7) has a flatter metallicity gradient when compared with the gradients obtained from older open clusters.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, To appear in Astronomische Nachrichten, special issue "Reconstruction the Milky Way's History: Spectroscopic surveys, Asteroseismology and Chemo-dynamical models", Guest Editors C. Modeling of a plasmonic biosensor based on a graphene nanoribbon superlattice

We present a semi-analytical theoretical model, which describes the operation of a selective molecular sensor [1] employing a double resonance between a dipole-active molecular vibration mode, tunable surface plasmons in a periodic structure of graphene nanoribbons (NRs), and the incident light, in the THz-to-IR range, used for testing. The model is based on the solution of Maxwell’s equa tions for the NR structure deposited on a dielectric substrate, using the electromagnetic Green’s function, and is extended to the case of an additional (buffer) layer present between the NRs and the substrate. Both the graphene NRs and the layer of adsorbed molecules are considered as two-dimensional, since their thicknesses are very small in comparison with the wavelength of the incident light. The model is applied to different molecular systems, the protein studied in Ref. [1], for which an excellent agreement with experimental data is obtained, and an organometallic molecule Cd(CH3)2. Two different assumptions concerning the way of sticking of the analyte molecules to the sensor’s surface are considered and the limitations of this sensing principles are discussed.Funding from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) in the framework of the Strategic Financing UID/FIS/04650/2019. My aim in undertaking this project is to establish a Business Plan and outline a three-year strategy for the Belong Institute, which provides services on human development and Mental Health expertise encompassing various fields such as Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy of Adolescent Children and Adults, Educational Psychology, Pediatrics, Developmental Pediatrics, Neuropediatrics, Pedopsychiatry, Psychomotricity, Psychiatry, Speech Therapy, Family and Couple Therapy, Nutrition and Study Methods and Techniques. With a focus on Mental Health in Portugal, Its Mission aims to be the go-to solution by offering professional aid and advice that can be accessed by anyone facing the challenges encountered at any point in life. Furthermore, its objective includes training individuals as facilitators for others development while promoting mental well-being. This strategy will demonstrate how Belong Institute will, in the coming years, become the biggest reference in Mental Health, with a clear objective and sustainable plan where the insertion of New E-health Technologies will be fundamental for attracting investment and of economic sustainability. Sodium and Oxygen Abundances in the Open Cluster NGC 6791 from APOGEE H-Band Spectroscopy

    Get PDF
The open cluster NGC 6791 is among the oldest, most massive and metal-rich open clusters in the Galaxy. High-resolution HH-band spectra from the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) of 11 red giants in NGC 6791 are analyzed for their chemical abundances of iron, oxygen, and sodium. The abundances of these three elements are found to be homogeneous (with abundance dispersions at the level of \sim 0.05 - 0.07 dex) in these cluster red giants, which span much of the red-giant branch (Teff_{\rm eff} \sim 3500K - 4600K), and include two red-clump giants. From the infrared spectra, this cluster is confirmed to be among the most metal-rich clusters in the Galaxy ( = 0.34 ±\pm 0.06), and is found to have a roughly solar value of [O/Fe] and slightly enhanced [Na/Fe]. Non-LTE calculations for the studied Na I lines in the APOGEE spectral region (λ\lambda16373.86\AA\ and λ\lambda16388.85\AA) indicate only small departures from LTE (\leq 0.04 dex) for the parameter range and metallicity of the studied stars. The previously reported double population of cluster members with different Na abundances is not found among the studied sample.Comment: Accepted for publication at ApJ Letter

The present dissertation project, Restructuring of Planning Cycle processes in the Logistics section of a Company - was carried out in an industrial environment, within the scope of the Integrated Master in Industrial Engineering and Management and had as its main focus to improve the planning cycle, parallel to the internal application Production Management, from the company Leica Aparelhos Óticos de Precisão S.A. The methodology used was action research, which begins with the analysis and diagnosis of the current situation. Thus, it was decided to analyse the planning cycle, specifically the production one within the logistics department and the other departments with which it interacted, and it was found that it was not always possible to determine whether the processes were coherent and organized for three reasons: lack of a standardized procedure, lack of knowledge of its state and uncertainty of the distributed information. It starts with the mapping of logistical processes as well as their routines to better understand the state of the section and the functioning of the entire factory and its supply chain. After the mapping, two tools were developed which consists in dashboards - the production tables and the status tables - as well as a work instruction was reformulated to act on the materials, more specifically the obsolete materials. The result of the improvement proposals was a better transmission of information and higher quality of it, as well as the reduction of the stock value through the scrap of obsolete materials
