    Role of structural relaxations and vibrational excitations in the high-frequency dynamics of liquids and glasses

    We present theoretical investigation on the high-frequency collective dynamics in liquids and glasses at microscopic length scales and terahertz frequency region based on the mode-coupling theory for ideal liquid-glass transition. We focus on recently investigated issues from inelastic-X-ray-scattering and computer-simulation studies for dynamic structure factors and longitudinal and transversal current spectra: the anomalous dispersion of the high-frequency sound velocity and the nature of the low-frequency excitation called the boson peak. It will be discussed how the sound mode interferes with other low-lying modes present in the system. Thereby, we provide a systematic explanation of the anomalous sound-velocity dispersion in systems -- ranging from high temperature liquid down to deep inside the glass state -- in terms of the contributions from the structural-relaxation processes and from vibrational excitations called the anomalous-oscillation peak (AOP). A possibility of observing negative dispersion -- the {\em decrease} of the sound velocity upon increase of the wave number -- is argued when the sound-velocity dispersion is dominated by the contribution from the vibrational dynamics. We also show that the low-frequency excitation, observable in both of the glass-state longitudinal and transversal current spectra at the same resonance frequency, is the manifestation of the AOP. As a consequence of the presence of the AOP in the transversal current spectra, it is predicted that the transversal sound velocity also exhibits the anomalous dispersion. These results of the theory are demonstrated for a model of the Lennard-Jones system.Comment: 25 pages, 22 figure

    ‘Blue boats’ and ‘reef robbers’: A new maritime security threat for the Asia Pacific?

Asia Pacific Viewpoint published by Victoria University of Wellington and John Wiley & Sons Australia, Ltd Vietnamese ‘blue boats’ – small wooden-hulled fishing boats – are now entering the territorial waters of Pacific Island countries and illegally catching high-value species found on remote coastal reefs. Crossing several international boundaries and traversing a distance of over 5000 km, these intrusions have alarmed Oceanic countries, including Australia. Lacking administrative capacity as well as jurisdictional authority to effectively control the vast stretches of island coastlines individually, governments and intergovernmental bodies in the region have called for strengthened coordination of surveillance efforts while also pressuring Vietnam diplomatically. This paper reviews these latest developments and is the first to provide a focused assessment of the issue. Through the lens of Copenhagen School of securitisation theory, we analyse responses of national and regional actors and their portrayal in online media to understand how blue boats are constructed as a security threat within a narrative of maritime, food and human security. Arguably, Australia together with the Forum Fisheries Agency, who advise on the governance of offshore tuna resources, have so far acted most decisively – in a way that might see them extend their strategic role in the region. We propose a comprehensive empirical research agenda to better understand and manage this nascent, flammable and largely unpredictable inter-regional phenomenon

    3D-Printed Drug/Cell Carrier Enabling Effective Release of Cyclosporin A for Xenogeneic Cell-Based Therapy

    Systemic administration of the immunosuppressive drug cyclosporin A (CsA) is frequently associated with a number of side effects; therefore, sometimes it cannot be applied in sufficient dosage after allogeneic or xenogeneic cell transplantation. Local delivery is a possible solution to this problem. We used 3D printing to develop a CsA-loaded 3D drug carrier for the purpose of local and sustained delivery of CsA. The carrier is a hybrid of CsA-poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) microsphere-loaded hydrogel and a polymeric framework so that external force can be endured under physiological conditions. The expression of cytokines, which are secreted by spleen cells activated by Con A, and which are related to immune rejection, was significantly decreased in vitro by the released CsA from the drug carrier. Drug carriers seeded with xenogeneic cells (human lung fibroblast) were subcutaneously implanted into the BALB/c mouse. As a result, T-cell-mediated rejection was also significantly suppressed for 4 weeks. These results show that the developed 3D drug carrier can be used as an effective xenogeneic cell delivery system with controllable immunosuppressive drugs for cell-based therapy.1176Ysciescopu

    Statistics of level spacing of geometric resonances in random binary composites

    We study the statistics of level spacing of geometric resonances in the disordered binary networks. For a definite concentration pp within the interval [0.2,0.7][0.2,0.7], numerical calculations indicate that the unfolded level spacing distribution P(t)P(t) and level number variance Σ2(L)\Sigma^2(L) have the general features. It is also shown that the short-range fluctuation P(t)P(t) and long-range spectral correlation Σ2(L)\Sigma^2(L) lie between the profiles of the Poisson ensemble and Gaussion orthogonal ensemble (GOE). At the percolation threshold pcp_c, crossover behavior of functions P(t)P(t) and % \Sigma^2(L) is obtained, giving the finite size scaling of mean level spacing δ\delta and mean level number nn, which obey the scaling laws, % \delta=1.032 L ^{-1.952} and n=0.911L1.970n=0.911L^{1.970}.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures,submitted to Phys.     Distinguishing s±s^{\pm} and s++s^{++} electron pairing symmetries by neutron spin resonance in superconducting NaFe0.935_{0.935}Co0.045_{0.045}As

    A determination of the superconducting (SC) electron pairing symmetry forms the basis for establishing a microscopic mechansim for superconductivity. For iron pnictide superconductors, the s±s^\pm-pairing symmetry theory predicts the presence of a sharp neutron spin resonance at an energy below the sum of hole and electron SC gap energies (E2ΔE\leq 2\Delta) below TcT_c. On the other hand, the s++s^{++}-pairing symmetry expects a broad spin excitation enhancement at an energy above 2Δ2\Delta below TcT_c. Although the resonance has been observed in iron pnictide superconductors at an energy below 2Δ2\Delta consistent with the s±s^\pm-pairing symmetry, the mode has also be interpreted as arising from the s++s^{++}-pairing symmetry with E2ΔE\ge 2\Delta due to its broad energy width and the large uncertainty in determining the SC gaps. Here we use inelastic neutron scattering to reveal a sharp resonance at E=7 meV in SC NaFe0.935_{0.935}Co0.045_{0.045}As (Tc=18T_c = 18 K). On warming towards TcT_c, the mode energy hardly softens while its energy width increases rapidly. By comparing with calculated spin-excitations spectra within the s±s^{\pm} and s++s^{++}-pairing symmetries, we conclude that the ground-state resonance in NaFe0.935_{0.935}Co0.045_{0.045}As is only consistent with the s±s^{\pm}-pairing, and is inconsistent with the s++s^{++}-pairing symmetry.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures. submitted to PR

    Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia: Insights from Lymph Nodes & Bone Marrow and Clinical Perspectives

    B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-CLL) is characterized by highly variable distribution of tumor mass between peripheral blood, bone marrow and lymphoid organs which is important for staging, classification and prognosis. These clinical findings with novel data about importance of B-cell receptor and its stimulation with the support of microenvironment indicate important role of tissues (lymphoid organs and bone marrow) in the pathogenesis of B-CLL. Here is presented the novel approach of simultaneous characterization of B-CLL cells form peripheral blood, bone marrow and lymph nodes by flow cytometry and immunocytochemistry, defining inter- and intraclonal diversity with respect to various molecules. These include adhesion molecules (integrins, immunoglobulins, selectins), chemokine receptors (including CXCR-4), signaling molecules and prognostic factors (CD38 and ZAP-70), proliferation and apoptosis markers (including Ki67, AgNORs with PK index, survivin, bcl-2) and therapeutic targets (CD20 and CD52) and residual hematopoietic stem cells. A number of interesting significant interactions have been discovered, pointing to the important role of neoplastic cell microenvironment. These may in addition to insights in pathogenesis and roles of different microenvironments add to diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of B-CLL patients

    Weather effects on the patterns of people's everyday activities: a study using GPS traces of mobile phone users

    This study explores the effects that the weather has on people's everyday activity patterns. Temperature, rainfall, and wind speed were used as weather parameters. People's daily activity patterns were inferred, such as place visited, the time this took place, the duration of the visit, based on the GPS location traces of their mobile phones overlaid upon Yellow Pages information. Our analysis of 31,855 mobile phone users allowed us to infer that people were more likely to stay longer at eateries or food outlets, and (to a lesser degree) at retail or shopping areas when the weather is very cold or when conditions are calm (non-windy). When compared to people's regular activity patterns, certain weather conditions affected people's movements and activities noticeably at different times of the day. On cold days, people's activities were found to be more diverse especially after 10AM, showing greatest variations between 2PM and 6PM. A similar trend is observed between 10AM and midnight on rainy days, with people's activities found to be most diverse on days with heaviest rainfalls or on days when the wind speed was stronger than 4 km/h, especially between 10AM–1AM. Finally, we observed that different geographical areas of a large metropolis were impacted differently by the weather. Using data of urban infrastructure to characterize areas, we found strong correlations between weather conditions upon people's accessibility to trains. This study sheds new light on the influence of weather conditions on human behavior, in particular the choice of daily activities and how mobile phone data can be used to investigate the influence of environmental factors on urban dynamics

    Evaluation of interface adhesion of hot-dipped zinc coating on TRIP steel with tensile testing and finite element calculation

    Abstract In this work, a methodology for the determination of the interface adhesion strength of zinc coating on TRIP steel is present. This method consists of a conventional tensile test in combination with finite element calculation. The relation between the average interface crack length and the applied tensile stress is determined on the partially delaminated coating with in-situ tensile test. The delamination process of zinc coating on steel substrate is simulated by using a two-grain finite element model with different interface adhesion strengths. By comparing the experimental observation with the finite element calculations, the interface adhesion strength is estimated. The interface adhesion strength of the zinc coating on transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) steel is found as high as 160 MPa. The influences of microstructural parameters of zinc coating including zinc grain orientation and grain size on the delamination behavior of the zinc coating are also analyzed with the finite element model
