Internationalisation strategies in UK universities
This study explores the development of internationalisation strategies in higher education institutions and examines the importance of the international student social experience as a strategic priority in higher education. The specific motivation for the study was to link the relatively new concepts of the internationalisation of HE and the international student social experience to the strategic management literature.
A Grounded Theory methodology was employed using four universities as case studies. Data was collected via semi-structured in-depth interviews and document review, which were analysed using the constant comparative method. This research forms a basis for understanding the nature of the internationalisation strategies in HEIs summarised in the following three main findings:
The study has helped to develop a model which illustrates the evolution of the internationalisation agenda at higher education institutions and demonstrates how the term internationalisation emerged and became a strategic objective. The three developmental phases of this model, as universities mature from operational to strategic, can be used as a roadmap by universities who have just started to establish an on-the-ground international presence so that they can drive the internationalisation process forward and give it a higher profile for an increasingly globalised and competitive future.
The findings led to the development of a framework which describes the international strategic management process in HEIs. The on-going 5-step process of: identifying vision, mission and objectives, conducting a situational analysis, formulating strategy, implementing strategy, evaluating and monitoring performance can be used as a guideline for HEIs to formulate and implement their international strategies effectively.
The study found that it is important for the international student social experience to be embedded within the international strategies of HEIs in order to ensure socio-academic integration. It suggests that a successful holistic ‘international student experience’ should achieve a balance between imparting academic knowledge and skills, providing an outstanding social life and preparing students to be global citizens. This perspective can positively impact on international strategies at HEIs which seek to provide a ‘first class’ experience to home and international students
Significance of serum levels of angiopoietin-2 and its relationship to Doppler ultrasonographic findings in rheumatoid arthritis patients
AbstractBackgroundAngiopoietin-2 (Ang-2) is connected to angiogenesis in synovial regions, but the significance of its levels in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is still unclear.Aim of the workTo evaluate the significance of serum levels of Ang-2 in patients with RA. Also, to determine Ang-2 relationship to the findings of joints Doppler ultrasonographic findings.Patients and methodsThis study included 40 patients with RA, and 25 matched healthy controls. All patients were subjected to assessment of pain using visual analogue scale (VAS), assessment of personal activity using the Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ) score, and calculation of disease activity score (DAS 28). Laboratory assays of complete blood count (CBC), C-reactive protein (CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), rheumatoid factor (RF) titre, and measurement of serum levels of Ang-2 by ELISA. Doppler ultrasonography (US) assessment for eight joints, with calculation of synovial thickness and total signal score (TSS), was done.ResultsSerum Ang-2 levels were significantly higher among patients (3191.3±594.9pg/ml) than controls (1771.7±103.1pg/ml) (p<0.001). Serum Ang-2 levels were significantly correlated with ESR, CRP, DAS28, and duration of morning stiffness (p<0.001, p<0.001, p<0.001, and p=0.025, respectively). There was a significant correlation between serum Ang-2 levels and findings of US, regarding joint synovial thickness, and TSS (p<0.001, for both).ConclusionPatients with RA had significantly higher levels of serum Ang-2 versus controls. In those patients, serum Ang-2 levels were significantly correlated with disease activity markers (ESR, CRP), DAS28, and duration of morning stiffness. Moreover, these levels were significantly correlated with synovial thickness, and TSS. The role of Ang-2 in RA pathogenesis might open the door to the development of new therapeutic strategies, particularly which target angiogenesis
An inverted virtual faculty development program for remote teaching: pilot for replication
Background: Due to the COVID 19 pandemic, all the universities worldwide are experiencing a paradigm shift to online learning. Baby boomers and Generation X need to cope with the challenging transformation, so an emerging need for a faculty development program was needed towards achieving the goal of that transformation. Objectives: To describe and assess an inverted virtual faculty development program (VFDP) that was designed and implemented for the first time in the school to equip educators with the necessary technology competencies for remote online learning. Methods: An interventional prospective study held in a university setting post need analysis conduction to prioritize the required technological skills for faculty members. The program was designed to integrate five essential skills needed to by faculty members to teach remotely. The intervention comprised attending five virtual sessions after watching a pre-distributed material, then evaluated using the Kirkpatrick model.Results: Almost 81% of faculty members completed the program and 80 % of participants were satisfied with the content of the program. There was a statistically significant difference between the perceived ability of the participants to share and record video lectures before and after the VFDP (p value <0.001). The percentage of the departments that applied the program components showed that 96% of them were able to record lectures. In addition, 80% of them were able to develop online quizzes. Conclusion: The inverted virtual faculty development program (VFDP) has supported the participating faculty in developing their needed technological competencies required to bridge the gap of remote teaching/learning
Predictive model on architectural design optimization for minimizing construction cost with design constraints
In many different development projects, we need to minimize construction costs and usable area according to the design constraints assigned to each project. The aim of the research is to contrive a mathematical model for calculating the dimensions and sizes of rooms in a residential plan to get the least cost and manage the resources of construction. This paper presents a mathematical model (nonlinear programming) to achieve the above-mentioned goals according to the various design constraints and conditions, depending on the nature of the project and the goal of its establishment. To check the efficiency and accuracy of results the system of the nonlinear objective function and nonlinear constraints are solved using Mathematica and GAMS programs in two different cases. Tables and graphical representations of the results are very useful to the problem stated in this study. The study was applied to one of the projects of the New Urban Communities Authority in Egypt
Dual buoyant/mucoadhesive macroporous polypropylene microparticles for gastric delivery of repaglinide
Preparation and characterization of dual buoyant/mucoadhesive polypropylene microparticles (MPs) loaded with repaglinide (REP) for gastric drug delivery in order to augment the weak mucoadhesion in the stomach.Porous foam powder MPs were prepared using coating polymers with variable permeability (Eudragit L100, Eudragit RSPO) alone or in combination by the soaking method. Thiolated Eudragit L100 (Eudragit L100-SH) was also synthesized and tried in an attempt to enhance the mucoadhesive properties of MPs. All formulae were characterized for their yield, flow properties, particle size, encapsulation efficiency (EE %), morphology, and drug release and its mechanistics. Possible interactions inside MPs matrix were also elucidated using FTIR study. The suitability of the selected formulae for gastroretention was evaluated by in vitro buoyancy and ex-vivo mucoadhesion studies.All REP-loaded MPs demonstrated a passable powder flow, high yield values, promising floatation and mucoadhesion. Encapsulation efficiency % values were nearly tripled upon addition of Eudragit polymers. Compared to the Eudragit free REP loaded foam powder, all formula showed more sustained release features. Eudragit L100-SH was synthesized and confirmed by FTIR. Furthermore, its incorporation, alone or in combination, exhibited a significant increase in mucoadhesion strength compared to the unmodified one.Dual buoyant/mucoadhesive MPs loaded with REP encourage planning for future in-vivo performance studies for the management of diabetes
Immunohistochemical Expression of “L1 cell Adhesion Molecule†in Endometrial Carcinomas
BACKGROUND: Endometrial cancer is the most common cancer of the female genital tract. No effective biomarkers currently exist to allow for an efficient risk classification of endometrial carcinoma or to direct treatment (adjuvant radiation and/or chemotherapy) or to triage pelvic and para-aortic lymphadenectomy. L1 cell adhesion molecule (L1CAM) a transmembrane protein of the immunoglobulin family that has been implicated in promoting tumor cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and metastasis became an attractive candidate as a potential biomarker in endometrial carcinoma and potential therapeutic target in high-risk groups.
OBJECTIVES: Evaluation of L1CAM expression in endometrial carcinoma and correlation of this expression with various pathological parameters.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Immunohistochemical staining for L1CAM was performed on paraffin-embedded sections of 80 cases of endometrial carcinomas that underwent total hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. Expression of L1CAM in >10% of tumor cells was interpreted as positive.
RESULTS: L1CAM expression was detected in 22.5% of cases and showed statistically significant correlation with non-endometrioid histological type, high grade, high FIGO stage, high pathological (T) stage, cervical involvement, nodal metastasis, lymphovascular space invasion, and high-risk tumor according to the European Society for Medical Oncology system for risk stratification (p < 0.05).
CONCLUSION: The high rate of L1CAM expression in high-risk endometrial carcinomas suggests that L1CAM represents a potential marker for the identification of patients needing closer follow-up and aggressive treatment. In addition, its potential role as a therapeutic target for high-risk endometrial cancer seems promising
Pomegranate peel as a natural antioxidant boosts bucks' fertility under Egyptian summer conditions
[EN] Exposure of male rabbits to heat stress during summer adversely affects their fertility, leading to major production losses. A total of 16 male rabbits were randomly divided into 4 experimental groups exposed to temperatures ranging from a high of 30.3 to a low of 27.3 °C. Animals from first to fourth groups were fed diets containing 0, 1.5, 3.0, or 4.5% pomegranate peel (PP) to evaluate the ability of PP feeding to enhance bucks¿ reproductive status. Pomegranate peel treatments significantly increased ejaculate volume by 19, 18 and 12%, increased seminal plasma fructose by 7, 18, and 24%, improved sperm motility by 28, 34 and 49%, increased sperm total output by 37, 69 and 102% and reduced dead sperm by 24, 32 and 64% with diets containing 1.5, 3.0 and 4.5% of PP compared to the heat stressed control animals. Seminal plasma total lipids, cholesterol and triglycerides increased while alkaline phosphatase decreased with PP treatments. Seminal plasma total antioxidant capacity increased to reach 126, 143 and 191% with diets containing 1.5, 3.0 and 4.5% of PP, while lipid peroxide (malondialdehyde) levels decreased significantly to reach around 54% of the heat stressed bucks¿ value with the three PP dietary doses used. Robust Ad-hoc Sensor Routing (RASeR) protocol for mobile wireless sensor networks
Robust Ad-hoc Sensor Routing (RASeR) is a novel protocol for data routing in mobile wireless sensor networks (MWSNs). It is designed to cope with the demanding requirements of emerging technologies, which require the reliable and low-latency delivery of packets in highly mobile conditions. RASeR uses blind forwarding, which is facilitated by a novel method of gradient maintenance. The problem of maintaining a gradient field in a changing topology, without flooding, is solved by using a global time division multiple access MAC. Furthermore, it is enhanced with the additional options of a supersede mode, to aid time-critical applications, reverse flooding, to allow sink-to-sensor commands and energy saving sleep cycles to reduce power consumption. Analytical expressions are derived and verified by simulation. RASeR is compared with the state-of-the-art MWSN routing protocols, PHASeR and MACRO, as well as the MANET protocols, AODV and OLSR. The results indicate that RASeR is a high performance protocol, which shows improvements over PHASeR, MACRO, AODV and OLSR. Tested over varying levels of mobility, scalability and traffic, the simulations yield near perfect PDR in many scenarios, as well as a low end-to-end delay, high throughput, low overhead and low energy consumption. The robustness of this protocol and its consistent reliability, low latency and additional features, makes it highly suitable to a wide number of applications. It is specifically applicable to highly mobile situations with a fixed number of nodes and small payloads
A Systematic Review on the Extent and Quality of Pharmacoeconomic Publications in Egypt.
BACKGROUND: Egypt faces many challenges when matching patient needs with available resources. Consequently, there has been an increasing interest in pharmacoeconomics as an aid tool in health decision-making to better allocate resources. OBJECTIVES: To review and evaluate the volume and the quality of published pharmacoeconomic studies in Egypt. METHODS: A literature search was conducted in August 2018 using PubMed, Google Scholar, and Cochrane library to identify published Egyptian pharmacoeconomic studies. Articles were included if they were original economic studies, written and published in English, and conducted in Egypt. Each article was assessed independently by two reviewers using the 100-point Quality of Health Evaluation Studies (QHES) scale. RESULTS: Fifteen studies published between 2002 and 2017 were included in the review. Most of them were cost-effectiveness analyses (60%). The minority used secondary data (33.3%) or adopted modeling techniques (40%). The mean QHES score of the included studies was 70.1 ± 21.8, and approximately 40% of them had a QHES score of more than 80. CONCLUSION: Pharmacoeconomic evaluations in Egypt are still in their infancy. The Egyptian guidelines for economic evaluation should be adopted and the EQ-5D-5L value sets should be developed to increase the quality of economic research
Surgical site infection after gastrointestinal surgery in high-income, middle-income, and low-income countries: a prospective, international, multicentre cohort study
Background: Surgical site infection (SSI) is one of the most common infections associated with health care, but its importance as a global health priority is not fully understood. We quantified the burden of SSI after gastrointestinal surgery in countries in all parts of the world.
Methods: This international, prospective, multicentre cohort study included consecutive patients undergoing elective or emergency gastrointestinal resection within 2-week time periods at any health-care facility in any country. Countries with participating centres were stratified into high-income, middle-income, and low-income groups according to the UN's Human Development Index (HDI). Data variables from the GlobalSurg 1 study and other studies that have been found to affect the likelihood of SSI were entered into risk adjustment models. The primary outcome measure was the 30-day SSI incidence (defined by US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention criteria for superficial and deep incisional SSI). Relationships with explanatory variables were examined using Bayesian multilevel logistic regression models. This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT02662231.
Findings: Between Jan 4, 2016, and July 31, 2016, 13 265 records were submitted for analysis. 12 539 patients from 343 hospitals in 66 countries were included. 7339 (58·5%) patient were from high-HDI countries (193 hospitals in 30 countries), 3918 (31·2%) patients were from middle-HDI countries (82 hospitals in 18 countries), and 1282 (10·2%) patients were from low-HDI countries (68 hospitals in 18 countries). In total, 1538 (12·3%) patients had SSI within 30 days of surgery. The incidence of SSI varied between countries with high (691 [9·4%] of 7339 patients), middle (549 [14·0%] of 3918 patients), and low (298 [23·2%] of 1282) HDI (p < 0·001). The highest SSI incidence in each HDI group was after dirty surgery (102 [17·8%] of 574 patients in high-HDI countries; 74 [31·4%] of 236 patients in middle-HDI countries; 72 [39·8%] of 181 patients in low-HDI countries). Following risk factor adjustment, patients in low-HDI countries were at greatest risk of SSI (adjusted odds ratio 1·60, 95% credible interval 1·05–2·37; p=0·030). 132 (21·6%) of 610 patients with an SSI and a microbiology culture result had an infection that was resistant to the prophylactic antibiotic used. Resistant infections were detected in 49 (16·6%) of 295 patients in high-HDI countries, in 37 (19·8%) of 187 patients in middle-HDI countries, and in 46 (35·9%) of 128 patients in low-HDI countries (p < 0·001).
Interpretation: Countries with a low HDI carry a disproportionately greater burden of SSI than countries with a middle or high HDI and might have higher rates of antibiotic resistance. In view of WHO recommendations on SSI prevention that highlight the absence of high-quality interventional research, urgent, pragmatic, randomised trials based in LMICs are needed to assess measures aiming to reduce this preventable complication
