Ion clustering in aqueous salt solutions near the liquid/vapor interface
Molecular dynamics simulations of aqueous NaCl, KCl, NaI, and KI solutions
are used to study the effects of salts on the properties of the liquid/vapor
interface. The simulations use the models which include both charge transfer
and polarization effects. Pairing and the formation of larger ion clusters
occurs both in the bulk and surface region, with a decreased tendency to form
larger clusters near the interface. An analysis of the roughness of the surface
reveals that the chloride salts, which have less tendency to be near the
surface, have a roughness that is less than pure water, while the iodide salts,
which have a greater surface affinity, have a larger roughness. This suggests
that ions away from the surface and ions near the surface affect the interface
in opposite ways.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
The Herschel Virgo Cluster Survey. IV. Resolved dust analysis of spiral galaxies
We present a resolved dust analysis of three of the largest angular size spiral galaxies, NGC 4501 and NGC 4567/8, in the Herschel Virgo Cluster Survey (HeViCS) science demonstration field. Herschel has unprecedented spatial resolution at far-infrared wavelengths and with the PACS and
SPIRE instruments samples both sides of the peak in the far infrared spectral energy distribution (SED).We present maps of dust temperature, dust mass, and gas-to-dust ratio, produced by fitting modified black bodies to the SED for each pixel. We find that the distribution of dust temperature in both systems is in the range ~19–22 K and peaks away from the centres of the galaxies. The distribution of dust mass in both systems is symmetrical and exhibits a single peak coincident with the galaxy centres. This Letter provides a first insight into the future analysis possible with a large sample of resolved galaxies to be observed by Herschel
Water velocity meter
Simple, inexpensive drag sphere velocity meter with a zero to 6 ft/sec range measures steady-state flow. When combined with appropriate data acquisition system, it is suited to applications where large numbers of simultaneous measurements are needed for current mapping or velocity profile determination

Development of SCR Aircraft takeoff and landing procedures for community noise abatement and their impact on flight safety
Piloted simulator studies to determine takeoff and landing procedures for a supersonic cruise transport concept that result in predicted community noise levels which meet current Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) standards are discussed. The results indicate that with the use of advanced procedures, the subject simulated aircraft meets the FAA traded noise levels during takeoff and landing utilizing average flight crew skills. The advanced takeoff procedures developed involved violating three of the current Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR) noise test conditions. These were: (1) thrust cutbacks at altitudes below 214 meters (700 ft); (2) thrust cutback level below those presently allowed; and (3) configuration change, other than raising the landing gear. It was not necessary to violate any FAR noise test conditions during landing approach. It was determined that the advanced procedures developed do not compromise flight safety. Automation of some of the aircraft functions reduced pilot workload, and the development of a simple head-up display to assist in the takeoff flight mode proved to be adequate
