Using Lessons from Health Care to Protect the Privacy of Library Users: Guidelines for the De-Identification of Library Data based on HIPAA
While libraries have employed policies to protect the data about use of their services, these policies are rarely specific or standardized. Since 1996 the U.S. healthcare system has been grappling with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), which is designed to provide those handling personal health information with standardized, definitive instructions as to the protection of data. In this work, the authors briefly discuss the present situation of privacy policies about library use data, outline the HIPAA guidelines to understand parallels between the two, and finally propose methods to create a de-identified library data warehouse based on HIPAA for the protection of user privacy
Job Search Strategies and Labor Market Success
This study examines the relation between job search strategies and two measures of labor market success, starting salary and number of job offers received, in a sample of graduating MBAs. Controlling for applicant and market characteristics, we find that job search strategy is related to both starting salary and number of job offers, but most strongly to the latter measure of labor market success. Beginning the job search earlier, greater numbers of employer contacts, and not accepting the first job offer all contribute to greater labor market success. These findings suggest that individuals take concrete steps to achieve greater labor market success than would be expected based on their personal attributes and market conditions
Cannabis use and hypomania in young people: a prospective analysis
Background:
Cannabis use in young people is common and associated with psychiatric disorders. However, the prospective link between cannabis use and bipolar disorder symptoms has rarely been investigated. The study hypothesis was that adolescent cannabis use is associated with hypomania in early adulthood via several potential etiological pathways.
Methods:
Data were used from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, a UK birth cohort study. The prospective link between cannabis use at age 17 and hypomania at age 22–23 years was tested using regression analysis, adjusted for gender, early environmental risk factors, alcohol and drug use, and depression and psychotic symptoms at age 18 years. Path analysis examined direct and indirect effects of the link and whether gender, childhood family adversity, or childhood abuse are associated with hypomania via an increased risk of cannabis use.
Results:
Data were available on 3370 participants. Cannabis use at least 2–3 times weekly was associated with later hypomania (OR = 2.21, 95% CI = 1.49–3.28) after adjustment. There was a dose–response relationship (any use vs weekly). Cannabis use mediated the association of both childhood sexual abuse and hypomania, and male gender and hypomania. The cannabis use-hypomania link was not mediated by depression or psychotic symptoms.
Conclusions:
Adolescent cannabis use may be an independent risk factor for future hypomania, and the nature of the association suggests a potential causal link. Cannabis use mediates the link between childhood abuse and future hypomania. As such it might be a useful target for indicated prevention of hypomania

Job quality in Europe
Promoting job quality and gender equality are objectives of the European Employment
Strategy (EES) in spite of a downgrading of the attention given to both in the
revised employment guidelines and the re-launch of the Lisbon Process. However,
advances on both of these objectives may be important complements to the employment
rate targets of the EES, as access to good quality jobs for both sexes is likely to
help sustain higher employment rates. While the European Commission has a broad
view of the concept of job quality in practice, it relies on a selection of labour market
type indicators that say little about the quality of the actual jobs people do. Using
data from the 2005 European Working Conditions survey, we analyse job quality
along three dimensions: job content, autonomy and working conditions. We conclude
that gender and occupational status, along with other job characteristics such as
working time and sector, have more influence on an individual’s job quality than the
country or ‘national model’ they are situated in. Our results also demonstrate the
value of developing indicators of job quality that are both gender sensitive and
derived at the level of the job rather than the labour market in order to advance EU
policy and academic debate on this topic
European Springtails Orchesella cincta (L.) and O. villosa (L.) (Collembola: Entomobryidae): Vagabond Species of the Nearctic Region
North American specimens of the European invasive springtail Orchesella cincta (L.) were compared to several published European haplotypes in a phylogenetic framework using likelihood methods based on a portion of cytochrome oxidase II (cox2). Our analyses provide direct evidence of at least two distinct introductions of this invasive to North America from different regions of Europe. Additional introduction events cannot be ruled out because detection is limited by extremely low sequence divergence among populations inhabiting different regions of the continent. Orchesella villosa (L.), another invasive from Europe, is another candidate for multiple introductions. Herein we include the cox2 sequence from single specimens of O. villosa from Maine and Oregon. Although these two specimens are identical in sequence, they differ from a published sequence from a European specimen by 15%, indicating significant undocumented genetic variation in the natal range of O. villosa. Additional sampling of Nearctic populations of O. villosa might reveal the same situation reported herein for O. cincta
