Exotic Physics

A selection of results for searches for exotic physics at the LHC are presented. These include a search for massive resonances, dark matter with a high energy jet in association with large missing transverse momentum, long-lived neutral particles, and narrow dijet resonances. The results are based on 20/fb of LHC proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV taken with the CMS detector.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures. 3rd generation SUSY searches at CMS

The latest results on searches for stop and sbottom squarks are presented. Searches for direct squark production in a variety of decay channels are reviewed. Determination of |Vub| using the lepton energy spectrum in events tagged with a fully reconstructed B meson

PhDWe present measurements of partial branching fractions for the inclusive semileptonic decay of B ! Xu` (` = e or ) leading to the determination of the CKM matrix element jVubj. This analysis is based on a sample of 460 million BB events recorded at the (4S) resonance at the BABAR detector. We select B ! Xu` events using the energy spectrum of the lepton (E`) in an event where one of the B-mesons is fully reconstructed. We measure partial branching fractions in restricted regions of the E` spectrum, which are translated into values of jVubj using four theoretical approaches. We calculate the arithmetic mean, using the results from the four theoretical approaches at E` > 1:5 GeV resulting in: jVubj = (4:68+0:31 0:32) 103. The analysis presented in this thesis is the rst time a measurement of jVubj has been performed using the E` spectrum in events tagged with a fully reconstructed B meson

SUSY searches in CMS

The latest results from CMS on searches for supersymmetry are presented. Searches involving all-hadronic final states with jets and missing transverse energy, and in final states including one or more isolated leptons are discussed. The results are based on 19.5/fb of LHC proton-proton collisions at sqrt = 8 TeV taken with the CMS detector.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures. Measurement of the t(t)over-bar production cross section in the dilepton channel in pp collisions at √s=8 TeV

The top-antitop quark (t (t) over bar) production cross section is measured in proton-proton collisions at root s = 8 TeV with the CMS experiment at the LHC, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.3 fb(-1). The measurement is performed by analysing events with a pair of electrons or muons, or one electron and one muon, and at least two jets, one of which is identified as originating from hadronisation of a bottom quark. The measured cross section is 239 +/- 2 (stat.) +/- 11 (syst.) +/- 6 (lum.) pb, for an assumed top-quark mass of 172.5 GeV, in agreement with the prediction of the standard model
