Matrix-Element Corrections to Parton Shower Algorithms
We discuss two ways in which parton shower algorithms can be supplemented by
matrix-element corrections to ensure the correct hard limit: by using
complementary phase-space regions, or by modifying the shower itself. In the
former case, existing algorithms are self-consistent only if the total
correction is small. In the latter case, existing algorithms are never
self-consistent, a problem that is particularly severe for angular-ordered
parton shower algorithms. We show how to construct self-consistent algorithms
in both cases. The postscript file for this paper can also be obtained by

Conversations with Robert: âJews as Jewsâ and the Critique of the Critique
I first met Robert some twenty-five years ago. I had just begun my PhD. As time passed, it was evident that things were not working out between me and my then supervisor, and Robert, whom I had met earlier, stepped in and offered to take over. After a little hesitation (and for the very reasons Robert had identi- fied), I agreed. I think it would not be an over- statement to say that without that intervention, I would have simply given up. Robert had an uncanny way of building up what was, by then, my shattered confidence. It was only after I had finished that I realized how Robert put me back together both emotionally and academically. Robert would respond to my work, first, by saying how good it was, how insightful, and then spend the rest of the time gently taking it (but not me) to pieces while at the same time moving me in directions and making connections I did not see myself.</jats:p
Catching the next wave : the use of the Internet by justice and development voluntary organisations and people organisations : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Philosophy in Development Studies at Massey University
This thesis examines the extent to which third world organisations have participated in the shaping, control and benefits of development theory and practice. It concludes that development theory has been a creation of the first world acting upon the third world which is often perceived as powerless to help itself. Modernisation theory, development theory, alternative theories and neo-liberalism are all theories that developed out of the first world experience of development. Development theory has not been shaped by the third world rather it has been manipulated and controlled from within the first world. The very poor of the poorest countries have not benefited from development theory. Participation, also perceived as empowerment, has been lauded by development practitioners as the new panacea for development ills. Even though such participation is not so evident in reality, third world organisations are becoming more participatory, especially where first world organisations have changed their role from funder and provider to solidarity partners and advocators (within their own country). This thesis examined the potential of the Internet to increase the participation of third world organisations in voicing their justice and development issues to the first world. The Internet is only a participatory tool when used in a participatory environment. Its use will not necessarily ensure greater participation, of the third world, in development issues. As yet the Internet's potential is largely unrealised. This thesis conducted descriptive research into the extent that third world organisations use the Internet to further their justice and development objectives. The research found that third world use of the Internet was low compared to first world use of the Internet. This thesis recommends that the use of email subscription lists and World Wide Web sites by grassroots organisations from within third world countries is a unique opportunity to promote the third world perception of development issues to the first world

Middlesex and the Biopolitics of Modernist Architecture
Highlighting the architecture of the Middlesex house of Eugenidesâ novel as a major technology of modernity, Seymour argues for the biopolitical understanding of such modernist architecture and for the ways in which it often works against the exploitative effects of automation and sexology, yet constitutes a complex and even contradictory force in processes of modernization, and in the novel itself
Tracing High Redshift Starformation in the Current and Next Generation of Radio Surveys
The current deepest radio surveys detect hundreds of sources per square
degree below 0.1mJy. There is a growing consensus that a large fraction of
these sources are dominated by star formation although the exact proportion has
been debated in the literature. However, the low luminosity of these galaxies
at most other wavelengths makes determining the nature of individual sources
difficult. If future, deeper surveys performed with the next generation of
radio instrumentation are to reap high scientific reward we need to develop
reliable methods of distinguishing between radio emission powered by active
galactic nuclei (AGN) and that powered by star formation. In particular, we
believe that such discriminations should be based on purely radio, or relative
to radio, diagnostics. These diagnostics include radio morphology, radio
spectral index, polarisation, variability, radio luminosity and flux density
ratios with non-radio wavelengths e.g. with different parts of the infrared
(IR) regime. We discuss the advantages and limitations of these various
diagnostics methods with current and future surveys. However, weeding AGN out
of deep radio surveys can already provide several insights into the star
formation at high redshift. As well as reproducing the well known rise with
redshift in the comoving star formation rate density, we also see evidence for
the continued dominance of LIRGs and ULIRGs to the total star forming budget
across redshifts 1-3. Additionally, while we see that the IR-radio relation for
star forming galaxies does hold to high redshifts (z>1) there is a mild
deviation depending on the IR waveband used and the range of IR SEDs found. We
will discuss the possible reasons behind this change in properties.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures. Panoramic Radio Astronomy: Wide-field 1-2 GHz

Disavowal. Distinction and Repetition: Alain Badiou and the Radical Tradition of Antisemitism
My focus in this chapter on the militant French philosopher, Alain Badiou, emerges from my work into the various ways that the Shoah has been incorporated into antisemitic ways of thinking. In what follows, I argue that Badiouâs thoughts on what he terms âuses of the word âJewââ3 in general, as well as on the Shoah in particular, offers a series of continuities with what can be called the radical tradition of antisemitismâa tradition that reaches back at least as far as Bruno Bauerâs anti-emancipationist, and avant le lettre, antisemitic texts of the 1840s. It simultaneously questions the notion of a sharp rupture between what have been termed âclassicalâ and ânewâ antisemitism. It questions also the place of the Shoah in recent critical thinking within a dialectic of disavowal, dis-tinction, and repetition
