The Melting ‘Crown of the Continent’: Visual History of Glacier National Park

    Get PDF
Glacier National Park (GNP), located in northwest Montana, US, was signed into existence on 11 May 1910 by then President William Howard Taft. Conservationist George Bird Grinnell was instrumental in lobbying for the park’s creation and negotiated the sale with the Blackfeet Indians. As an editor of the outdoor magazine Field and Stream, Grinnell learned about the region from writer James Willard Schultz and made his first visit there in 1885. Enticed and amazed by the glaciers of the area, the high Rocky Mountain alpine terrain, and the flora and fauna that thrived here, Grinnell advocated for the creation of the park, nicknaming it the “Crown of the Continent.” Grinnell recognized glaciers as a geological wonder. As historian Gerald Diettert records in his 1992 book, Grinnell called the glaciers the “jewels” in the crown. Setting aside land to enjoy the glaciers seemed like a logical means to conserve the landscapes and ecosystems that they supported. Yet today, just about a hundred years from when the park was founded, the glaciers that form GNP’s snow-capped crown are close to extinction. [excerpt

Materials and Methods: One hundred and four patients of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes visiting the outdoor department were included in this study. They were assessed by lab results of glycosylated hemoglobin, fasting and random blood sugar levels and neurological physical examination. Results: The physical examination with Michigan Neuropathy Screening instrument showed that around 29 of the patients were having established neuropathy. The PainDETECT questionnaire on the other hand showed about 42 patients having a definitive neuropathy while the neurothesiometer showed that 79 of the total patients had varying degrees of neuropathy. Conclusion: The neurothesiometer is a better diagnostic tool for diagnosing diabetic neuropathy in patients

Methionine Adenosyltransferase 1a (MAT1A) Enhances Cell Survival During Chemotherapy Treatment and is Associated with Drug Resistance in Bladder Cancer PDX Mice.

Bladder cancer is among the top ten most common cancers, with about ~380,000 new cases and ~150,000 deaths per year worldwide. Tumor relapse following chemotherapy treatment has long been a significant challenge towards completely curing cancer. We have utilized a patient-derived bladder cancer xenograft (PDX) platform to characterize molecular mechanisms that contribute to relapse following drug treatment in advanced bladder cancer. Transcriptomic profiling of bladder cancer xenograft tumors by RNA-sequencing analysis, before and after relapse, following a 21-day cisplatin/gemcitabine drug treatment regimen identified methionine adenosyltransferase 1a (MAT1A) as one of the significantly upregulated genes following drug treatment. Survey of patient tumor sections confirmed elevated levels of MAT1A in individuals who received chemotherapy. Overexpression of MAT1A in 5637 bladder cancer cells increased tolerance to gemcitabine and stalled cell proliferation rates, suggesting MAT1A upregulation as a potential mechanism by which bladder cancer cells persist in a quiescent state to evade chemotherapy

The Moment Problem for Continuous Positive Semidefinite Linear functionals

Let τ\tau be a locally convex topology on the countable dimensional polynomial R\reals-algebra \rx:=\reals[X_1,...,X_n]. Let KK be a closed subset of Rn\reals^n, and let M:=M{g1,...gs}M:=M_{\{g_1, ... g_s\}} be a finitely generated quadratic module in \rx. We investigate the following question: When is the cone \Pos(K) (of polynomials nonnegative on KK) included in the closure of MM? We give an interpretation of this inclusion with respect to representing continuous linear functionals by measures. We discuss several examples; we compute the closure of M=\sos with respect to weighted norm-pp topologies. We show that this closure coincides with the cone \Pos(K) where KK is a certain convex compact polyhedron.Comment: 14 page

Stress induced hyperglycemia in stroke patients

    Get PDF
Background: Stroke is the third most common cause of death in developed countries and second most common cause of death worldwide. High proportion of patients may develop hyperglycemia after an acute stress such as stroke or myocardial infarction even in the absence of preexisting diagnosis of diabetes mellitus. Prolonged stress hyperglycemia in ischemic stroke increases the risk of in-hospital 28- day mortality, especially in non-diabetic patients. Aims and objectives:To determine the frequency of stress-induced hyperglycemia in non-diabetic patients with ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke. Subjects and methods: A total of 255 patients admitted with acute stroke, fulfilling the inclusion criteria were included in the study. After informed consent capillary blood glucose was monitored at the time of admission and after every 8-hour for three days. Glycosylated hemoglobin (hba1c) was measured simultaneously. Results: Hyperglycemia was noted in 67 (26.32%) patients. Out of which 50 (74.6%) presented with ischemic stroke while only 17 (25.4%) were associated with hemorrhagic stroke. Undiagnosed diabetes was found in 10% cases. Conclusion: Stress related hyperglycemia after acute stroke was found in 26% of patients especially those with high BMI, visceral obesity and positive family history for diabetes
