Bioethics organized as an institutional discipline has given a relevant contribution to the identification of the critical aspects of the traditional, paternalistic relationship between doctors and patients. In this paradigm, patients are passive addressees of decisions concerning their health and life. The different bioethical paths that have contributed to defining the current model of care focused on patients’ autonomy have been enriched with the feminist perspective and the reflection on the ethic of care. The feminist bioethics has highlighted the need for overcoming the view of an abstract patient and for considering her in the concrete dimension of existence, with her differences and specific needs. The focus on the peculiar female condition has promoted a general reconfiguration of the category of vulnerable subjects in medicine. The paper will try to explain the main steps of this analysis.

Abstract: This paper aims at critically discussing ethical questions concerning the identification and justification of criteria useful to handle the extraordinary situation hospitals have been facing since the COVID-19 emergency was declared. In order to achieve this goal, the paper compares two guidelines released by the Italian and Swiss medical associations as they represent two different approaches to the problem of rationing and allocating resources when they are very scarce. Keywords: Resource allocation. Rationing by age. Principle of justice. Ethical guidelines

Acquired Complement Regulatory Gene Mutations and Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant–Related Thrombotic Microangiopathy

Abstract Hematopoietic stem cell transplant–related thrombotic microangiopathy (HSCT-TMA) is a severe complication whose pathophysiology is unknown. We describe 6 patients in which the disease was associated with complement regulatory gene abnormalities received from their respective donors. It is suggested that mutated and transplanted monocyte-derived cells are responsible for production of abnormal proteins, complement dysregulation, and, ultimately, for the disease. This observation might have important drawbacks as far as HSCT-TMA pathophysiology and treatment are concerned

La diversità culturale alla prova della genetica Cultural diversity to the test of genetics

Abstract:  We can look at the issue of cultural diversity from many different angles. A fruitful approach is the one based on the bioethical reflection related to the biolaw’s perspective. To follow this approach allows to relate the topic of cultural diversity to the questions arising from scientific advances, with particular attention paid to genetics. In order to establish a connection between cultural diversity and scientific advances, the paper will first deal with the problem of definition of concepts. The aim is to offer a conceptual map where the concept of cultural diversity is related to the concept of biological diversity. Secondly, information resulting from the conceptual map will be corroborated by testing the outcomes in the light of recent genetic studies. Eventually, the legal dimension will be analyzed in order to underline the relevance of protecting cultural and biological diversity within the framework of fundamental rights. Keywords: Cultural diversity, biological diversity, fundamental rights, nature v. nurture debate, Bioethics and biolaw

    Get PDF
