    Street Politics

    I write from Prague, where, unlike in most urban formations, the main city street plays an iconic role; it references a history of political protest. However, before elaborating on the protest iconography of the Prague street, Vaclavske nam, I want to locate the ways in which the design of urban space is actualized in everyday life in the cities of the world. Three functions stand out; the first involves dwelling, the second seeing, and the third moving. With respect to the first function – dwelling – the design partitions and coordinates residential, commercial and leisure functions. At times these are organized to segregate different classes (Robert Moses’ redesign of much of New York stands out with respect to the segregation function). With respect to the second function – seeing – the design of urban space is allegiance-inspiring; it involves sight lines that afford urban dwellers and visitors views of iconic buildings and statues, which reference key founding moments in the past and/or authoritative political functions in the present (Here, L’Enfants design for Washington DC stands out as exemplary. Its manifest intention was to make the buildings housing executive, legislative and judicial functions visible from many vantage points). Rarely are the streets themselves iconic. Their dominant role is involved with the effectuation of movement. As for this third function: As Lewis Mumford famously points out, streets were once part of an asterisk design, radiating out from an exemplary, often spiritual center..

    In this essay I inquire into the way visual arts intervene to disclose and unsettle perspectives on the inequalities within the metropolitan venues in which immigrant populations from former colonies dwell and provide the historical context of the hegemonic structures that such interventions seek to challenge. The inquiry proceeds through a reading of Michael Haneke’s film Caché, which follows a family whose personal memories of a wrong perpetrated on an Algerian foster child is an allegory of France’s willful amnesia about the security forces October 1961 attack on Algerian demonstrators.En este ensayo indago en la forma en que las artes visuales intervienen para revelar y desestabilizar perspectivas sobre las desigualdades dentro de los espacios metropolitanos en los que habitan las poblaciones inmigrantes de antiguas colonias y proporcionar el contexto histórico de las estructuras hegemónicas que tales intervenciones buscan desafiar.     Automatic structures, rational growth and geometrically finite hyperbolic groups

    We show that the set SA(G)SA(G) of equivalence classes of synchronously automatic structures on a geometrically finite hyperbolic group GG is dense in the product of the sets SA(P)SA(P) over all maximal parabolic subgroups PP. The set BSA(G)BSA(G) of equivalence classes of biautomatic structures on GG is isomorphic to the product of the sets BSA(P)BSA(P) over the cusps (conjugacy classes of maximal parabolic subgroups) of GG. Each maximal parabolic PP is a virtually abelian group, so SA(P)SA(P) and BSA(P)BSA(P) were computed in ``Equivalent automatic structures and their boundaries'' by M.Shapiro and W.Neumann, Intern. J. of Alg. Comp. 2 (1992) We show that any geometrically finite hyperbolic group has a generating set for which the full language of geodesics for GG is regular. Moreover, the growth function of GG with respect to this generating set is rational. We also determine which automatic structures on such a group are equivalent to geodesic ones.     Why Do Computers Depreciate?

    The value of installed computers falls rapidly and therefore computers have a very high user cost. The paper provides a complete account of the non-financial user cost of personal computers -- decomposing it into replacement cost change, obsolescence, instantaneous depreciation, and age-related depreciation. The paper uses data on the resale price of computers and a hedonic price index for new computers to achieve this decomposition. Once obsolescence is taken into account, age-related depreciation -- which is often identified as deterioration -- is estimated to be negligible. While the majority of the loss in value of used computers comes from declines in replacement cost, this paper shows the second most important source of decline in value is obsolescence. Obsolescence is accelerated by the decline in replacement cost of computers. Cheaper computing power drives developments in software and networks that make older computers less productive even though their original functionality remains intact.

    Toward an Integrated Vision of Undergraduate Liberal and Accounting Education in the Public Interest: the Holistic Development of Persons and Institutions

    This paper puts forward a vision that integrates liberal and accounting education to engage students with the idea of vocation and pursuit of the common good through their chosen field of accounting. We adopt a common good definition of the public interest that seeks to advance not only the good of institutions and communities (mutual interests) but also the good of individuals (private interests). This approach engages students to critically reflect on how their life experiences, personal commitments, and future professional work can relate to one another. We first discuss disciplinary fragmentation in higher education and its implications for integrating liberal and accounting education. Next, we describe general learning objectives and concepts that support the integration of liberal learning and accounting education with a public interest orientation. We then apply the approach to critique accounting practices that arguably harm the public interest. The concluding section provides a summary and describes how accounting educators may adapt and scale an approach that fits their institutional setting

    The molecular chaperone Heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90) is essential for the folding, stability, and activity of several drivers of oncogenesis. Hsp90 inhibitors are currently under clinical evaluation for cancer treatment, however their efficacy is limited by lack of biomarkers to optimize patient selection. We have recently identified the tumor suppressor tuberous sclerosis complex 1 (Tsc1) as a new co-chaperone of Hsp90 that affects Hsp90 binding to its inhibitors. Highly variable mutations of TSC1 have been previously identified in bladder cancer and correlate with sensitivity to the Hsp90 inhibitors. Here we showed loss of TSC1 leads to hypoacetylation of Hsp90-K407/K419 and subsequent decreased binding to the Hsp90 inhibitor ganetespib. Pharmacologic inhibition of histone deacetylases (HDACs) restores acetylation of Hsp90 and sensitizes Tsc1-mutant bladder cancer cells to ganetespib, resulting in apoptosis. Our findings suggest that TSC1 status may predict response to Hsp90 inhibitors in patients with bladder cancer, and co-targeting HDACs can sensitize tumors with Tsc1 mutations to Hsp90 inhibitors
