Conference Summary: HI Science in the Next Decade
The atomic hydrogen (HI) 21cm line measures the gas content within and around
galaxies, traces the dark matter potential and probes volumes and objects that
other surveys do not. Over the next decade, 21cm line science will exploit new
technologies, especially focal plane and aperture arrays, and will see the
deployment of Epoch of Reionization/Dark Age detection experiments and Square
Kilometer Array (SKA) precursor instruments. Several experiments designed to
detect and eventually to characterize the reionization history of the
intergalactic medium should deliver first results within two-three years time.
Although "precision cosmology" surveys of HI in galaxies at z ~ 1 to 3 require
the full collecting area of the SKA, a coherent program of HI line science
making use of the unique capabilities of both the existing facilities and the
novel ones demonstrated by the SKA precursors will teach us how many gas rich
galaxies there really are and where they reside and will yield fundamental
insight into how galaxies accrete gas, form stars and interact with their

Free will beliefs are better predicted by dualism than determinism beliefs across different cultures
Most people believe in free will. Whether this belief is warranted or not, free will beliefs
(FWB) are foundational for many legal systems and reducing FWB has effects on behavior
from the motor to the social level. This raises the important question as to which specific
FWB people hold. There are many different ways to conceptualize free will, and some might
see physical determinism as a threat that might reduce FWB, while others might not. Here,
we investigate lay FWB in a large, representative, replicated online survey study in the US
and Singapore (n = 1800), assessing differences in FWB with unprecedented depth within
and between cultures. Specifically, we assess the relation of FWB, as measured using the
Free Will Inventory, to determinism, dualism and related concepts like libertarianism and
compatibilism. We find that libertarian, compatibilist, and dualist, intuitions were related to
FWB, but that these intuitions were often logically inconsistent. Importantly, direct comparisons
suggest that dualism was more predictive of FWB than other intuitions. Thus, believing
in free will goes hand-in-hand with a belief in a non-physical mind. Highlighting the importance
of dualism for FWB impacts academic debates on free will, which currently largely
focus on its relation to determinism. Our findings also shed light on how recent (neuro)scientific
findings might impact FWB. Demonstrating physical determinism in the brain need not
have a strong impact on FWB, due to a wide-spread belief in dualism
Childhood alopecia areata: What treatment works best?
There are no validated effective treatments for alopecia areata (AA). Topical immunotherapy (squaric acid dibutylester [SADBE] and diphenylcyclopropenone [DPCP]) induces the most significant short-term hair regrowth in children with severe AA (strength of recommendation [SOR]: C, 4 small individual cohort studies and 1 moderately sized retrospective case review). Intralesional steroids can induce hair regrowth greater than 50% in children with limited AA (SOR: C, 1 retrospective cohort study). Other commonly used treatments--topical and oral corticosteroids, topical cyclosporine, photodynamic therapy, and topical minoxidil--have no benefit over placebo (SOR: A, 14 randomized controlled trials [RCTs] and 3 within-patient studies)
A multi-site, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot clinical trial to evaluate the efficacy of buspirone as a relapse-prevention treatment for cocaine dependence
Objective—To evaluate the potential efficacy of buspirone as a relapse-prevention treatment for cocaine dependence.
Method—A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 16-week pilot trial conducted at six clinical sites between August 2012 and June 2013. Adult crack cocaine users meeting DSM-IVTR criteria for current cocaine dependence scheduled to be in inpatient/residential substance use disorder (SUD) treatment for 12–19 days when randomized, and planning to enroll in local outpatient treatment through the end of the active treatment phase were randomized to buspirone titrated to 60 mg/day (n=35) or to placebo (n=27). All participants received psychosocial treatment as usually provided by the SUD treatment programs in which they were enrolled. Outcome measures included maximum days of continuous cocaine abstinence (primary), proportion of cocaine use days, and days-to-first-cocaine-use during the outpatient treatment phase (study weeks 4–15) as assessed by self-report and urine drug screens.
Results—There were no significant treatment effects on maximum continuous days of cocaine abstinence or days to first cocaine use. In the females (n=23), there was a significant treatment-bytime interaction effect (X2 (1)=6.06, p=.01), reflecting an increase in cocaine use by the buspirone, relative to placebo, participants early in the outpatient treatment phase. A similar effect was not detected in the male participants (n=39; X2 (1)=0.14, p=.70).
Conclusions—The results suggest that buspirone is unlikely to have a beneficial effect on preventing relapse to cocaine use and that buspirone for cocaine-dependent women may worsen their cocaine-use outcomes.

Modulation of phosphatidylinositol 4-phosphate levels by CaBP7 controls cytokinesis in mammalian cells
Calcium and phosphoinositide signaling regulate cell division in model systems, but their significance in mammalian cells is unclear. Calcium-binding protein-7 (CaBP7) is a phosphatidylinositol 4-kinaseIIIβ (PI4KIIIβ) inhibitor required during cytokinesis in mammalian cells, hinting at a link between these pathways. Here we characterize a novel association of CaBP7 with lysosomes that cluster at the intercellular bridge during cytokinesis in HeLa cells. We show that CaBP7 regulates lysosome clustering and that PI4KIIIβ is essential for normal cytokinesis. CaBP7 depletion induces lysosome mislocalization, extension of intercellular bridge lifetime, and cytokinesis failure. These data connect phosphoinositide and calcium pathways to lysosome localization and normal cytokinesis in mammalian cells
Overview of Propellant Delivery Systems at the NASA John C. Stennis Space Center
A wide range of rocket propulsion test work occurs at he NASA John C. Stennis Space Center (SSC) including full-scale engine test activities at test facilities A-1, A-2, B-1 and B-2 as well as combustion device research and development activities at the E-Complex (E-1, E-2. E-3 and E-4) test facilities. One of the greatest challenges associated with operating a test facility is maintaining the health of the primary propellant system and test-critical support systems. The challenge emerges due to the fact that the operating conditions of the various system components are extreme (e.g., low temperatures, high pressures) and due to the fact that many of the components and systems are unique. The purpose of this paper is to briefly describe the experience and modeling techniques that are used to operate the unique test facilities at NASA SSC that continue to support successful propulsion testing
