Reflect on this!

In this article we reflect on reflection. To do this, we share examples of pedagogic approaches used in undergraduate performance programmes at York St John University that re-situate reflective practice within creative practice. For example, we explore the creative, multimodal use of a catalogue document that two of the authors used to encourage students to reflect as part of the B.A. (Hons) Theatre level 2 modules entitled performing the self & artist as witness. These modules aim to encourage students to consider themselves in some sense auteurs of themselves and their art practice. The case study illustrates that we need to go beyond the familiar if we are to be reflexive about the role of reflection in creative practice education

Engineering of Ancient Greece

STEP Category: Education AbroadMy STEP project will be a two-week education abroad trip to Greece with a one-week class on campus in May 2019. The education abroad program, “Engineering of Ancient Greece” is through the Office of International Affairs at OSU. From May 6-10, I will be participating in the on-campus course, ENGR 5797.18, which explores the engineering wonders of Ancient Greece and the construction methods that were used. May 12-23 will be spent in-country, traveling to various islands and cities throughout Greece, exploring the temples and ruins while experiencing the modern Greek culture. The goal of the program is for students to learn the importance of iconic engineering sites and their construction methods. In addition to this, students get to explore a combination of ancient and modern Greek cultures and how the nation has been impacted by history. I have always wanted to travel to Greece, to visit Athens and the Parthenon, and to study the ancient Greek civilizations. My goal for this trip is to increase my global awareness by learning about and engaging with a new culture. I also want to increase my understanding of engineering by studying its beginnings in Greece and learning the tools and methods they used. To prepare for the trip and experience, I am learning some of the history of Greece and basic Greek phrases. Besides being an engineering student, I am also a Classical Humanities minor, studying Greek civilization. An inferential articulation of metaphorical assertions

This paper argues for the view that metaphors are assertions by locating metaphor within our social discursive practices of asserting and inferring. The literal and the metaphorical differ not in the stating of facts nor in the representation of states of affairs but in the kind of inferential involvements they have and the normative score-keeping practices within which the inferential connections are articulated. This inferentialist based account of metaphor is supplemented by insights from accommodation theory. The account is significant for our understanding of both metaphor‟s figurativeness and cognitive content

The Logic of Consciencism

According to Kwame Nkrumah, the conscience of the African society is plagued with three strands of influences which have competing and conflicting ideologies: “African society has one segment which comprises our traditional way of life; it has a second segment which is filled by the presence of the Islamic tradition in Africa; it has a final segment which represents the infiltration of the Christian tradition and culture of Western Europe into Africa, using colonialism and neocolonialism as its primary vehicles.” When these three segments with their conflicting ideologies are allowed to co-exist, the African society “will be racked by the most malignant schizophrenia.” Nkrumah’s solution, philosophical consciencism, presents an ideology aimed at achieving a harmony among the three segments in such a way that is “in tune with the original humanist principles underlying African society.” I do two main things in this paper: first, I present an analysis and critique of Nkrumah’s understanding of how the harmony is to be achieved in African societies; and second, I show how the theoretical ideas of philosophical consciencism – materialism, dialectical change, categorial conversion, socialism – are given actual form and content on the social-political scene through an analysis of Nkrumah's set theoretic term

Properties of Stars in the Subaru Deep Field

We investigate the properties of objects in the Subaru Deep Field (SDF), using public catalogs constructed from images in several optical passbands. Using a small subset of objects most likely to be stars, we construct a stellar locus in three-dimensional color space. We then compare the position of all objects relative to this locus to create larger samples of stars in the SDF with rough spectral types.
