BOOK REVIEW WORLD 3.0: GLOBAL PROSPERITY AND HOW TO ACHIEVE IT
The financial and economic crisis the World has faced from 2008 was the starting point for the thorough and systematic review of the World Pankaj Ghemawat offers us in the book World 3.0. The global crisis, with strong effects in several countries and industries, has shattered the convictions on the benefits of globalization. Ghemawat proposes analyzing and provide a factual answer of 2 fundamental questions: 1) are the alleged benefits of market integration greater than market failures it arises? and 2) does it make sense to reduce – instead of increasing – the integration of markets to make the problems smaller and easier to address? The answer to these questions offer the readers a data-driven perspective of globalization and a simple understanding of the leading market failures commonly associated to globalization. Ghemawat also puts forward an avenue for the future – the World 3.0 – where there is no trade-off between further integration and greater regulation of markets.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
An overview of three decades of mergers and acquisitions research
Mergers and acquisitions (M&A) have long attracted managers’ attention and have been researched in different perspectives and using different theories. In this study we grasp the wealth of extant research in the field of M&As. We conducted a bibliometric study of 635 articles on strategic management and international business research published in 34 highly ranked management journals between 1983 and 2012. We performed citation, co-citation and factor analyses to uncover the issues examined by scholars, the main theoretical approaches and themes researched. The results show a relative shift from economic and financial approaches to knowledge-based and organizational learning perspectives in recent years. There was also an evolution from assessing the performance of firms after an M&A to seeking an understanding of what may drive synergy creation after the integration process. Furthermore we observed an increasing interest in cross-border M&As. We discuss our findings, identifying gaps and suggesting paths for future research.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Resenha / RecensĂŁo : Great by Choice
Three decades of strategic management research on M&As: Citations, co-citations, and topics
Merger and acquisitions (M&As) strategies have been growingly deployed by firms for their domestic and international expansion, to redefine their business scope or take advantage of emerging opportunities. In this paper we conduct a bibliometric study of the extant strategy research on M&As, assessed by the articles published in the main journal for strategic management studies over the period 1984-2010. Results reveal the highest impact works (articles and books), the intellectual ties among authors and theories that form five main clusters of research, and the topics delved into. Performance effects, M&As as diversification strategies and RBV and capabilities-based topics have dominated the extant research. The study contributes to the extant knowledge on M&As by taking stock of the accumulated knowledge and research direction, complementing other literature reviews with a strategic management specific perspective. Thus, we provide a rear view of the field which facilitates detecting untapped gaps that may be munificent avenues for future research.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Schumpeter’s (1934) influence on entrepreneurship (and management) research
Entrepreneurship research has flourished since de 1980s, following the institutional development that created schools and courses, research centers and dedicated journals. This paper examines the impact of Joseph Schumpeter, one of the main “knowledge producers” whose concepts and ideas on the entrepreneur, entrepreneurship and innovation have shaped the discipline and much of the research on entrepreneurship, and has influenced the thought on other areas of management. Methodologically, we conducted a bibliometric study of the articles published in 16 high stature international journals, over a period of 30 years, between 1981 and 2010. On a sample of 412 articles citing Schumpeter, we analyzed and mapped citations, co-citations and research themes. We further establish distinctions between entrepreneurship and management research. This study presents a manner to examine the influence of a scholar, and a set of conceptualizations he has introduced, on a discipline. Schumpeter has had an imprint in the multidisciplinary and wealth of research themes that entrepreneurship scholars have delved upon but also in other management disciplines, where his perspectives on entrepreneurship, the entrepreneur and innovation have contributed to much of the research conducted to date. Although entrepreneurship has remained largely multidisciplinary and drawing from the main management theories there is a growing body of entrepreneurship-specific literature.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Understanding the Footprint of the RBV in International Business Studies: the Last Twenty Years of Research
International business (IB) research has evolved substantially over the past four decades incorporating new concerns and theoretical contributions. During the past two decades, the Resource-Based View (RBV) has gained the preference of many IB scholars and has gradually become one of the dominant theoretical perspectives for studying IB decisions and operations. The 1991 article “Firm resources and sustained competitive advantage” by Jay Barney is recognized as a fundamental contribution to the Resource-Based View (RBV). In this paper we assess the influence of the RBV, proxied by Jay Barney’s (1991) article, on IB research over the twenty years period, from 1991 to 2010. In this bibliometric study of the articles published in the leading journal for IB research – Journal of International Business Studies (JIBS) – we conduct citation and co-citation analyses, the networks of co-authorship, and delve into the analysis of the key research topics. Beyond understanding the extant research we also contribute to i identifying future research avenues.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Selecting talent using social networks: A mixed-methods study
Previous studies on the use of Social Networking Sites (SNS) in personnel selection generally focus on examining this phenomenon in the selection process as a whole. However, personnel selection is a macro-process composed of several activities. This paper aims to investigate how human resource professionals use SNS in hiring decisions during the different stages of the selection process. The research uses an explanatory sequential mixed-methods approach. The first study consisted of a questionnaire-based survey of hiring professionals with the intent to describe various aspects of current practice (n ÂĽ 429). Survey data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The second study comprised semi-structured interviews with hiring professionals to provide a more indepth, richer analysis (n ÂĽ 24). Interview data was analyzed via qualitative thematic analysis. Results uncovered two types of users. Single-stage users emphasized efficiency concerns, whereas multiple-stage users mentioned to access profiles on an as needed-basis. Participants reported that the patterns of use could be quite complex and dynamic, with selectors revisiting the profile of the same applicant several times for different purposes, or examining profiles of the same applicant in different SNS. The assessment of SNS information is typically nonsystematic, but some employers reported using scales, mainly in pre-selection. Evidence emerged of potential adverse effects during the selection process. Overall, this paper contributes to theory and practice by providing a better understanding of the use of SNS across the different stages of personnel selection. To our best knowledge, this is the first mixed-methods study of its kind.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Social networks in personnel selection: Profile features analyzed and issues faced by hiring professionals
Employers are increasingly using Social Networking Sites (SNS) to support hiring decisions, and yet the knowledge of their practice patterns remains limited. This paper aims to (a) examine which and to what extent selectors analyze applicant’s profile features to support hiring decisions, and (b) explore the issues selectors perceive as being important while using SNS in personnel selection. It employs a two-phase methodology: a questionnaire-based survey, and a semi-structured interview study. Selectors report to examine more often job-related features, though they also admitted to analyze protected personal details and non-job related features. From the statistical analysis of the profile features being analyzed, three different patterns emerged, suggesting that selectors (a) exclude applicants during pre-selection and after a face-to-face interview, and (b) collect additional information about applicants to know them more deeply. Practitioners highlighted, among others, privacy, impression management, standardization, and possible bias issues. Conclusions and implications of these findings are discussed.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
