Measurement of the CP violation phase in the system at LHCb
The interference between Bs decay amplitudes to CP eigenstates Jpsi X
directly or including Bs-Bsbar oscillation gives rise to a measurable CP
violating phase phi_s. Here, a preliminary measurement of phi_s with Bs ->
JpsiK+K- decays, and the measurement using Bs->Jpsipi+pi- decays, both obtained
from a sample of 1/fb of pp collisions, collected by the LHCb experiment at a
centre-of-mass energy sqrt{s}=7 TeV during 2011, are presented. In addition,
the determination of the branching fraction and polarization fractions of
Bs->JpsiKstbar, which can be used to constrain the contribution of sub-leading

The upgrade of the LHCb trigger system
The LHCb experiment will operate at a luminosity of
cms during LHC Run 3. At this rate the present readout and
hardware Level-0 trigger become a limitation, especially for fully hadronic
final states. In order to maintain a high signal efficiency the upgraded LHCb
detector will deploy two novel concepts: a triggerless readout and a full

HEP Community White Paper on Software trigger and event reconstruction
Realizing the physics programs of the planned and upgraded high-energy
physics (HEP) experiments over the next 10 years will require the HEP community
to address a number of challenges in the area of software and computing. For
this reason, the HEP software community has engaged in a planning process over
the past two years, with the objective of identifying and prioritizing the
research and development required to enable the next generation of HEP
detectors to fulfill their full physics potential. The aim is to produce a
Community White Paper which will describe the community strategy and a roadmap
for software and computing research and development in HEP for the 2020s. The
topics of event reconstruction and software triggers were considered by a joint

The legend about sailing ship effects – Is it true or false? The example of cleaner propulsion technologies diffusion in the automotive industry
The global automotive industry is faced with major technological change in the field of propulsion systems. Due to low carbon emission regulations and a rising societal demand for sustainability, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are forced to innovate either in the conventional technology or in the technological alternatives such as electric drives or fuel cells. However, OEMs are only marginally switching to electromobility so far, but rather incrementally innovating traditional technologies. This behaviour can be described as sailing ship effect which contains the reaction of an old technology to a new technology by fostering innovation in the old technology. Firstly, the present study contributes to the discussion in literature on the sailing ship effect by combining its underlying ideas and consequences with the rationales of path dependence to demonstrate that such a behaviour may be individually economical rational. Based on these considerations, we respond to the call for further empirical investigation of the sailing ship effect. We show patent-based evidence that there has been a temporary sailing ship effect in the automotive industry concerning traditional and emerging propulsion systems and discuss implications for corporate technology strategy and policy
Precise measurements of the properties of the B-1(5721)(0,+) and B-2*(5747)(0,+) states and observation of B-+,B-0 pi(-,+) mass structures
Invariant mass distributions of B+π− and B0π+ combinations are investigated in order to study excited B mesons. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to 3.0 fb−1 of pp collision data, recorded by the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. Precise measurements of the masses and widths of the B1(5721)0,+ and B2(5747)0,+ states are reported. Clear enhancements, particularly prominent at high pion transverse momentum, are seen over background in the mass range 5850-6000 MeV in both B+π− and B0π+ combinations. The structures are consistent with the presence of four excited B mesons, labelled BJ (5840)0,+ and BJ (5960)0,+, whose masses and widths are obtained under different hypotheses for their quantum numbers
Measurement of the forward Z boson production cross-section in pp collisions at TeV
A measurement of the production cross-section of Z bosons in pp collisions at TeV is presented using dimuon and dielectron final states in LHCb data. The cross-section is measured for leptons with pseudorapidities in the range , transverse momenta GeV and dilepton invariant mass in the range GeV. The integrated cross-section from averaging the two final states is \begin{equation*}\sigma_{\text{Z}}^{\ell\ell} = 194.3 \pm 0.9 \pm 3.3 \pm 7.6\text{ pb,}\end{equation*} where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is due to systematic effects, and the third is due to the luminosity determination. In addition, differential cross-sections are measured as functions of the Z boson rapidity, transverse momentum and the angular variable

The W bosons are reconstructed in the decays W→ℓν , where ℓ denotes muon or electron, while the b and c quarks are reconstructed as jets. Observation has lead to a conclusion that the physics analysis jobs run by LHCb physicists on a local computing farm (i.e. non-grid) require more efficient access to the data which resides on the Grid. Our experiments have shown that the I/O bound nature of the analysis jobs in combination with the latency due to the remote access protocols (e.g. rfio, dcap) cause a low CPU efficiency of these jobs. In addition to causing a low CPU efficiency, the remote access protocols give rise to high overhead (in terms of amount of data transferred). This paper gives an overview of the concept of pre-fetching and caching of input files in the proximity of the processing resources, which is exploited to cope with the I/O bound analysis jobs. The files are copied from Grid storage elements (using GridFTP), while concurrently performing computations, inspired from a similar idea used in the ATLAS experiment. The results illustrate that this file staging approach is relatively insensitive to the original location of the data, and a significant improvement can be achieved in terms of the CPU efficiency of an analysis job. Dealing with scalability of such a solution on the Grid environment is discussed briefly
