Population structures in the SARA and SARB reference collections of Salmonella enterica according to MLST, MLEE and microarray hybridization
In the 1980's and 1990's, population genetic analyses based on Multilocus Enzyme Electrophoresis (MLEE) provided an initial overview of the genetic diversity of multiple bacterial species, including Salmonella enterica. The genetic diversity within S. enterica subspecies enterica according to MLEE is represented by the SARA and SARB reference collections, each consisting of 72 isolates, which have been extensively used for comparative analyses. MLEE has subsequently been replaced by Multilocus Sequence Typing (MLST). Our initial MLST results indicated that some strains within the SARB collection differed from their published descriptions. We therefore performed MLST on four versions of the SARB collection from different sources and one collection of SARA, and found that multiple isolates in SARB and SARA differ in serovar from their original description, and other SARB isolates differed between different sources. Comparisons with a global MLST database allowed a plausible reconstruction of the serovars of the original collection. MLEE, MLST and microarrays were largely concordant at recognizing closely related strains. MLST was particularly effective at recognizing discrete population genetic groupings while the two other methods provided hints of higher order relationships. However, quantitative pair-wise phylogenetic distances differed considerably between all three methods. Our results provide a translation dictionary from MLEE to MLST for the extant SARA and SARB collections which can facilitate genomic comparisons based on archival insights from MLEE
Anterior Temporal Lobe Tracks the Formation of Prejudice
Despite advances in understanding the brain structures involved in the expression of stereotypes and prejudice, little is known about the brain structures involved in their acquisition. Here, we combined fMRI, a task involving learning the valence of different social groups, and modeling of the learning process involved in the development of biases in thinking about social groups that support prejudice. Participants read descriptions of valenced behaviors performed by members of novel social groups, with majority groups being more frequently encountered during learning than minority groups. A model-based fMRI analysis revealed that the anterior temporal lobe tracked the trial-by-trial changes in the valence associated with each group encountered in the task. Descriptions of behavior by group members that deviated from the group average (i.e., prediction errors) were associated with activity in the left lateral pFC, dorsomedial pFC, and lateral anterior temporal cortex. Minority social groups were associated with slower acquisition rates and more activity in the ventral striatum and ACC/dorsomedial pFC compared with majority groups. These findings provide new insights into the brain regions that (a) support the acquisition of prejudice and (b) detect situations in which an individual's behavior deviates from the prejudicial attitude held toward their group

Young infants' visual fixation patterns in addition and subtraction tasks support an object tracking account.
This is the final version of the article. Available from Elsevier via the DOI in this record.Investigating infants' numerical ability is crucial to identifying the developmental origins of numeracy. Wynn (1992) claimed that 5-month-old infants understand addition and subtraction as indicated by longer looking at outcomes that violate numerical operations (i.e., 1+1=1 and 2-1=2). However, Wynn's claim was contentious, with others suggesting that her results might reflect a familiarity preference for the initial array or that they could be explained in terms of object tracking. To cast light on this controversy, Wynn's conditions were replicated with conventional looking time supplemented with eye-tracker data. In the incorrect outcome of 2 in a subtraction event (2-1=2), infants looked selectively at the incorrectly present object, a finding that is not predicted by an initial array preference account or a symbolic numerical account but that is consistent with a perceptual object tracking account. Extensive dissolution of live pteropods in the Southern Ocean
The carbonate chemistry of the surface ocean is rapidly
changing with ocean acidification, a result of human activities. In the upper layers of the Southern Ocean, aragonite—a metastable form of calcium carbonate with rapid dissolution kinetics—may become undersaturated by 2050 (ref. 2). Aragonite undersaturation is likely to affect aragonite-shelled organisms, which can dominate surface water communities in polar regions. Here we present analyses of specimens of the pteropod Limacina helicina antarctica that were extracted live from the Southern Ocean early in 2008. We sampled from the top 200m of the water column, where aragonite saturation levels were around 1, as upwelled deep water is mixed with surface water containing anthropogenic CO2. Comparing the shell structure with samples from aragonite-supersaturated regions elsewhere under a scanning electron microscope, we found severe levels of shell dissolution in the undersaturated region alone. According to laboratory incubations of intact samples with a range of aragonite saturation levels, eight days of incubation in aragonite saturation levels of 0.94–
1.12 produces equivalent levels of dissolution. As deep-water upwelling and CO2 absorption by surface waters is likely to increase as a result of human activities2,4, we conclude that upper ocean regions where aragonite-shelled organisms are affected by dissolution are likely to expand

Functional neuroanatomical correlates of contingency judgement

Data, stimuli and other materials are available on: https://figshare.com/articles/dataset/functional_neuroanatomical_correlates_of_contingency_judgment/19768618 .Contingency judgement is an ability to detect relationships between events and is crucial in the allocation of attentional resources for reasoning, categorization, and decision making to control behaviour in our environment. Research has suggested that the allocation of attention is sensitive to the frequency of contingency information whether it constitutes a negative, zero or positive relationship. The aim of the present study was to explore the functional neuroanatomical correlates of contingency judgement with different frequencies and whether these are distinct from each other or whether they rely on a common mechanism. Using three contingency tasks within a streaming paradigm (one each for negative, zero, and positive contingency frequencies), we assessed brain activity by means of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in 20 participants. Contingency frequency was manipulated between blocks which allowed us to determine the neural correlates of each of the three contingency tasks as well as the common areas of activation. The conjunction of task activation showed activity in left parietal cortices (BA 23, 40) and superior temporal gyrus (BA42). Further, the interaction analysis revealed distinct areas that mainly involve lateral (BA 45) and medial (BA 9) prefrontal cortices in the judgment of negative contingencies compared with positive and zero contingencies. We interpret the finding as evidence that the shared regions may be involved in coding, integration, and updating of associative relations and distinct regions may be involved in the investment of attentional resources to varied degrees in the computation of contingencies to make a judgment
Changes in the Activities, Functions, and Roles of Public Health Educators
Accounts of early activities of public health educators, statements of the American Public Health Association on the qualifications and functions of these educators, and studies concerned with their responsibilities, functions, work, or roles are reviewed. These point up the three major foci in public health education over time in the U.S., viz, dissemination of information, community organization, and health behavior and program planning.
