Perfect colourings of isonemal fabrics by thin striping
Perfect colouring of isonemal fabrics by thin striping of warp and weft and
the closely related topic of isonemal prefabrics that fall apart are
reconsidered and their relation further explored. The catalogue of isonemal
prefabrics that fall apart is extended to order 20 for those of even genus.Comment: 25 pages, 20 figure
Plasmas generated by ultra-violet light rather than electron impact
We analyze, in both plane and cylindrical geometries, a collisionless plasma
consisting of an inner region where generation occurs by UV illumination, and
an un-illuminated outer region with no generation. Ions generated in the inner
region flow outwards through the outer region and into a wall. We solve for
this system's steady state, first in the quasi-neutral regime (where the Debye
length vanishes and analytic solutions exist) and then in the
general case, which we solve numerically. In the general case a double layer
forms where the illuminated and un-illuminated regions meet, and an
approximately quasi-neutral plasma connects the double layer to the wall
sheath; in plane geometry the ions coast through the quasi-neutral section at
slightly more than the Bohm speed . The system, although simple, therefore
has two novel features: a double layer that does not require counter-streaming
ions and electrons, and a quasi-neutral plasma where ions travel in straight
lines with at least the Bohm speed. We close with a pr\'{e}cis of our
asymptotic solutions of this system, and suggest how our theoretical
conclusions might be extended and tested in the laboratory.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, accepted by Physics of Plasma
Phenomenological Constraints on Axion Models of Dynamical Dark Matter
In two recent papers (arXiv:1106.4546, arXiv:1107.0721), we introduced
"dynamical dark matter" (DDM), a new framework for dark-matter physics in which
the requirement of stability is replaced by a delicate balancing between
lifetimes and cosmological abundances across a vast ensemble of individual
dark-matter components whose collective behavior transcends that normally
associated with traditional dark-matter candidates. We also presented an
explicit model involving axions in large extra spacetime dimensions, and
demonstrated that this model has all of the features necessary to constitute a
viable realization of the general DDM framework. In this paper, we complete our
study by performing a general analysis of all phenomenological constraints
which are relevant to this bulk-axion DDM model. Although the analysis in this
paper is primarily aimed at our specific DDM model, many of our findings have
important implications for bulk axion theories in general. Our analysis can
also serve as a prototype for phenomenological studies of theories in which
there exist large numbers of interacting and decaying particles.Comment: 48 pages, LaTeX, 13 figures, 1 tabl
Very High Mach Number Electrostatic Shocks in Collisionless Plasmas
The kinetic theory of collisionless electrostatic shocks resulting from the
collision of plasma slabs with different temperatures and densities is
presented. The theoretical results are confirmed by self-consistent
particle-in-cell simulations, revealing the formation and stable propagation of
electrostatic shocks with very high Mach numbers (), well above the
predictions of the classical theories for electrostatic shocks.Comment: 6 pages, submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
Numerical calculations of a high brilliance synchrotron source and on issues with characterizing strong radiation damping effects in non-linear Thomson/Compton backscattering experiments
A number of theoretical calculations have studied the effect of radiation
reaction forces on radiation distributions in strong field counter-propagating
electron beam-laser interactions, but could these effects - including quantum
corrections - be observed in interactions with realistic bunches and focusing
fields, as is hoped in a number of soon to be proposed experiments? We present
numerical calculations of the angularly resolved radiation spectrum from an
electron bunch with parameters similar to those produced in laser wakefield
acceleration experiments, interacting with an intense, ultrashort laser pulse.
For our parameters, the effects of radiation damping on the angular
distribution and energy distribution of \emph{photons} is not easily
discernible for a "realistic" moderate emittance electron beam. However,
experiments using such a counter-propagating beam-laser geometry should be able
to measure such effects using current laser systems through measurement of the
\emph{electron beam} properties. In addition, the brilliance of this source is
very high, with peak spectral brilliance exceeding
photonssmmmrad% bandwidth with
approximately 2% efficiency and with a peak energy of 10 MeV.Comment: 11 figures, 11 page
Transport Anomalies and Marginal Fermi-Liquid Effects at a Quantum Critical Point
The behavior of the conductivity and the density of states, as well as the
phase relaxation time, of disordered itinerant electrons across a quantum
ferromagnetic transition is discussed. It is shown that critical fluctuations
lead to anomalies in the temperature and energy dependence of the conductivity
and the tunneling density of states, respectively, that are stronger than the
usual weak-localization anomalies in a disordered Fermi liquid. This can be
used as an experimental probe of the quantum critical behavior. The energy
dependence of the phase relaxation time at criticality is shown to be that of a
marginal Fermi liquid.Comment: 4 pp., LaTeX, no figs., requires World Scientific style files

Mesons and Flavor on the Conifold
We explore the addition of fundamental matter to the Klebanov-Witten field
theory. We add probe D7-branes to the theory obtained from placing
D3-branes at the tip of the conifold and compute the meson spectrum for the
scalar mesons. In the UV limit of massless quarks we find the exact dimensions
of the associated operators, which exhibit a simple scaling in the large-charge
limit. For the case of massive quarks we compute the spectrum of scalar mesons
numerically.Comment: 19 pages, 3 figures, v2: typos fixe
