Case report. A rare case of giant basal cell carcinoma and malignant melanoma
The presence of two several skin lesions in the same patient is a rare occurrence in dermatological findings. The associations of malignant melanoma (MM) and giant basal cell carcinoma (BCC) within the same patient have only been described in few cases in the literature.1,6 Is there a common genetic origin? The course of cancer related fatigue up to ten years in early breast cancer patients. What impact in clinical practice?
Little is known about the cancer related fatigue (CRF) along cancer course and risk factors that could predict CRF development and persistence in breast cancer (BC) survivors. This prospective study detected incidence, timing of onset, duration of CRF, impact on QoL and psychological distress. Seventy-eight early BC patients, undergoing chemotherapy (CT) followed or not by hormonal therapy were assessed for QoL and psychological distress by EORTC QLQC30 and HADs questionnaires. Fatigue was investigated with mix methods, structured interview and psychometric measures. A qualitative analysis was added to assess the behavioral pattern of CRF. Low fatigue levels were identified after surgery (9%), increasing during (49%) and at the end of CT (47%), maintaining after 1 year (31%) and declining up to ten years of follow-up. Prevalence of CRF was higher at the end of CT and lower at follow-up. At the end and after 1 and 2 years from CT, persistence of CRF was associated to anxiety in 20%, 11% and 5% and to depression in 15%, 10% and 5% respectively. A relationship between CRF and psychological distress was observed; patients presenting depression and anxiety before CT were at higher risk for fatigue onset at a later period. A relationship between fatigue and QoL was noted at the end of CT. Our study shows the fatigue timely trend in early BC patients from surgery, CT and follow-up. Identification of biological, psychological, social predictor factors related to fatigue could be helpful for early interventions in patients at higher risk of developing fatigue
A rare case of leiomyoma of the bladder
Bladder leiomyoma is a benign tumour of the bladder and constitute <0.5% of all bladder tumors. We report a clinical case of a 51‑year‑old female who presented with with symptomatic bladder leiomyoma. An ultrasound examination showed well-defined bladder leiomyoma in the right posterior bladder wall, which was excised through a transurethral resection. Patient-specific 3D Printed Liver Models for Pre-operative Planning and Improved Patient Adherence
Project Background: 3D anatomical relationships in the liver are not always visually accessible for surgeons performing resections even with advanced imaging options. Firm understanding of these relationships is essential for timely procedures, which can improve patient outcomes and lower hospital expenses. Patient-specific 3D modeling has existed for some time, though it is costly. New cost-effective techniques have surfaced which may yield opportunities for more effective preoperative planning in liver surgery and improved patient adherence.
Methods: Digital patient-specific 3D reconstruction of a liver was completed by interpolating data from MRI scans using 3D Slicer, a segmenting program. The liver model was processed and 3D printed as a shell to be used as a mold. The liver shell, associated vasculature, and tumor were printed using polylactic acid (PLA) filament on an Ultimaker S5 3D printer. Transparent silicone was used as a cast, giving the model a solid form yet still allowing examination of the inside contents.
Results: One completed liver model was used in pre-surgical consultation of a patient with hepatocellular carcinoma undergoing liver resection and during the surgical procedure as a guide for the surgical team. A follow-up survey concerning qualitative aspects of the model administered to the surgical team suggested high accuracy of the model compared to the anatomy observed during the procedure.
Conclusion: Cost-effective techniques in producing patient specific 3D anatomical models appears not only feasible, but highly effective in improving communication between the surgical team during the procedure and also between the surgeon and the patient during pre-surgical consultation. Future research may be conducted concerning the model’s visual clarity as well as impact on patient adherence post-op
Evaluating the expression of urokinase and tissue leukocyte being in benign and malignant breast disease
Introduction: Our objectives is to show that the expression of uPA leukocyte could be considered, in the future, as a marker of
the expression of uPA in the malignant tissue and therefore a potential indicator of prognosis.
Methods: We examined the expression of uPa in leukocytes and tissues of three groups of women: with breast cancer; with
benign breast lesion and healthy women (control group). We used RT Real Time PCR assay. The expression of urokinase is
significantly higher in malignant breast lumps compared to benign lesions. However, in women with carcinoma of the breast,
malignant tissue expresses higher amounts of uPA than the healthy counterpart. There are no statistically significant differences in
the expression of uPA, between tissues taken from women with benign lesions. The lymphocytes taken from healthy volunteers
show a level of expression of uPA significantly lower than the other tested samples Lymphocytes extracted from cancer patients
express higher amounts of uPA compared to lymphocytes belonging to women with benign breast lesions. The expression of uPA
was compared with the clinical and biological parameters commonly used in clinical practice for the definition of the prognosis.
The only exception found, concerns those tumors characterized by the simultaneous negativity for estrogen receptors,
progesterone and HER2 (state of triple negative), in which the expression of uPA is very high.
Results and conclusions: Our data show that uPA expressed by leukocytes of each individual patient is the mirror image of the

We report a rare case of primary Hodgkin’s lymphoma (HL) of the submandibular
gland, with initially diagnosis of Kuttner’s Syndrom. A 48 years old man was referred to our hospital foe evaluation
of a submandibular mass. Although the initial Fine Needle Aspiration and subsequent cytology was highly suggestive for a cronic sialadenitis with lymphoid cells.
After surgical gland removal we obtained a definitive diagnosis of Hodgkin’s lymphoma in

Which is the most accurate diagnostic procedure in Tamoxifen treated breast cancer patients
Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of bi-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) transvaginal ultrasound (TVUS), hysterosonography (HSSG) and hysteroscopy in the detection of endometrial pathology in women treated with tamoxifen (TMX) for breast cancer.
Methods: Forty-two patients, affected by breast cancer under treatment with TMX, underwent 2D-3D TVUS, HSSG and hysteroscopy completed by biopsy, after abnormal findings following a routine 2D TVUS examination.
Results: 3D-TVUS was more accurate than 2D-TVUS in the detection of atrophic endometrium confirmed by biopsy and in the detection of endometrial polyps.
HSSG and hysteroscopy detected atrophic endometrium and endometrial polyps significantly better than ultrasound scan. Endometrial carcinoma was detected in two cases, and in both HSSG and hysteroscopy were 100% diagnostic.
Conclusion: In TMX treated breast cancer patients, HSSG and hysteroscopy provide more accurate diagnosis than 2D-3D ultrasound in the detection of treatment related endometrial lesions
Random copying in space
Random copying is a simple model for population dynamics in the absence of
selection, and has been applied to both biological and cultural evolution. In
this work, we investigate the effect that spatial structure has on the
dynamics. We focus in particular on how a measure of the diversity in the
population changes over time. We show that even when the vast majority of a
population's history may be well-described by a spatially-unstructured model,
spatial structure may nevertheless affect the expected level of diversity seen
at a local scale. We demonstrate this phenomenon explicitly by examining the
random copying process on small-world networks, and use our results to comment

Effect of the electronic pressure on the energy and magnetic moment of charged test particles in turbulent electromagnetic fields
In this work we perform direct numerical simulations of three-dimensional
magnetohydrodynamics with a background magnetic field, representing solar wind
plasma, and introduce test particles to explore how a turbulent electromagnetic
environment affects them. Our focus is on the terms of the electric field
present in the generalized Omh's Law that are usually dismissed as unimportant.
These are the Hall and the electronic pressure (EP) terms, but we concentrate
primarily on the latter. We discover that the EP term generates an acceleration
of the particles, which represent protons, in the direction parallel to the
background magnetic field, in contrast to the known preferential perpendicular
energization. By studying the electric field itself, we are able to detect the
type of structures of the EP field that produce such parallel acceleration.
These are thin and elongated structures placed on top of a monotonic and
near-zero background. A statistical study to understand the real significance
of the electronic pressure term is also performed
