    Get PDF
Print journals collection development is a long-standing academic library role, whose support of university curriculum and research is essential. However, academic libraries have weathered difficult collection development decisions due to costs and strained budgets. As technology has given rise to online journals and space is reallocated, libraries have shifted focus to online journals. In addition, some academic libraries select open access journals to supplement subscriptions, but lack criteria. Furthermore, academic libraries are challenged by some open access journals’ predatory practices, unreliable access, and lacking peer review. This article explores academic libraries’ open access journals collection development and provides a blueprint

Equitable access to education for students with disabilities is not just a good idea, it is the law. However, all students benefit from having multiple possible ways to learn. I believe the same holds true for library services and resources. However, making courses and library resources and services is easier to imagine than it is to do. Come to this presentation to hear about what I learned in the ADA & Web Accessibility Self-Paced Workshop from Online Learning Consortium and how I have improved the accessibility of library resources and services

Promoting Open Access Journals and Open Data to Your Scholarly Community for Maximum Impact

    Get PDF
Open access journals and open data provide researchers with information that would otherwise be behind a paywall. Both are growing exponentially and are widely used and cited by scholars. However, not all open access journals are respected, peer reviewed publications and should be evaluated prior to submitting research. Open data repositories allow researchers to deposit their data to promote it and make it available for others to access and use. Getting the word out about scholarly research is fundamental to other researchers to access it, and augments the possibility of citations and altmetrics scores. Come to this presentation to hear about how you can promote open access to scholars in your community so that they can publish and promote their open access research for maximum impact

The COVID-19 pandemic taught librarians that we needed to up our game of providing access to needed resources to serve patrons’ needs even while our physical buildings were shuttered last year. Some vendors and publishers offered deals to libraries to convert their print book purchases or journal subscriptions to online; however, not all libraries had funds to do this. Other publishers offered free access to part or all of their resources to libraries, and some are continuing to do so even though some libraries have returned to more normal operations. Open access resources have been around for years, and allow libraries to expand their access to resources beyond the library walls without financial burden, but they do offer challenges for libraries, especially during the COVID-19 shutdown. Come to this presentation to learn about the benefits and challenges of open access for libraries during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond

Is your library’s print serials collection irrelevant and little used? Have you been given a mandate to change? Has your library’s budget been cut while you must provide access to relevant serials and databases? In June of 2013, Axe Library had a change of leadership and at the same time, staff were given a mandate to change by university administration with no idea of what that meant. In addition, the library faced a crippling budget shortfall that meant subscription cuts were inevitable. As a result, staff came to realize that the status quo of doing their jobs as they knew them would no longer suffice. The library had to make lasting changes in providing access to relevant resources, but also deal with the budget crisis. With the new Dean’s leadership, staff members united to set priorities for relevant serials and database needs in order to create a student-centered, service oriented library. While Axe Library’s situation is not unique, this librarian discusses innovative ideas and suggests a model for other libraries
