Issues Relevant to C-H Activation at Platinum(II): Comparative Studies between Cationic, Zwitterionic, and Neutral Platinum(II) Compounds in Benzene Solution
Cationic late metal systems are being highly scrutinized due to
their propensity to mediate so-called electrophilic C-H
activation reactions. This contribution compares the reactivity
of highly reactive cationic platinum(II) systems with
structurally related but neutral species. Our experimental
design exploits isostructural neutral and cationic complexes
supported by bis(phosphine) ligands amenable to mechanistic
examination in benzene solution. The data presented herein
collectively suggests that neutral platinum complexes can be
equally if not more reactive towards benzene than their
cationic counter-parts. Moreover, a number of unexpected
mechanistic distinctions between the two systems arise that
help to explain their respective reactivity
Coordinating Anions: (Phosphino)tetraphenylborate Ligands as New Reagents for Synthesis
Anionic, electron-releasing phosphines that incorporate a borate counteranion within the ligand framework are promising reagents for organometallic catalysis. This report describes the synthesis of a new class of monodentate tertiary phosphines built upon the commonly employed tetraphenylborate anion. These new phosphines
are highly stable and strongly electron-releasing and readily coordinate transition metals. Moreover, they are promising reagents for catalysis, as demonstrated by their ability to promote the Suzuki cross-coupling of aryl chloride substrates
The Effect of Olanzapine on Craving and Alcohol Consumption
Previous studies have indicated that olanzapine decreases craving after a priming dose of alcohol, that craving after a priming dose of alcohol is greater among individuals with the seven-repeat allele of the DRD4 variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR) polymorphism, and that the effect of olanzapine (a D2/D4 antagonist) is more pronounced among individuals with this allele. The present study tested the hypothesis that olanzapine may be differentially effective at reducing cue-elicited craving and differentially effective as a treatment for alcohol dependence over the course of a 12-week, randomized, placebo-controlled trial among individuals with and without the seven-repeat allele. Participants who met DSM IV criteria for alcohol dependence were randomly assigned to receive olanzapine (5 mg) or a placebo over the course of the trial. After 2 weeks of treatment, participants completed a cue reactivity assessment. The results suggested that participants who were homozygous or heterozygous for the seven (or longer)-repeat allele of the DRD4 VNTR responded to olanzapine with reductions in cue-elicited craving as well as reductions in alcohol consumption over the course of the 12-week trial, whereas individuals with the shorter alleles did not respond favorably to olanzapine
Lessons Learned during Thermal Hardware Integration on the Global Precipitation Measurement Satellite
The Global Precipitation Measurement mission is a joint NASA/JAXA mission scheduled for launch in late 2013. The integration of thermal hardware onto the satellite began in the Fall of 2010 and will continue through the Summer of 2012. The thermal hardware on the mission included several constant conductance heat pipes, heaters, thermostats, thermocouples radiator coatings and blankets. During integration several problems arose and insights were gained that would help future satellite integrations. Also lessons learned from previous missions were implemented with varying degrees of success. These insights can be arranged into three categories. 1) the specification of flight hardware using analysis results and the available mechanical resources. 2) The integration of thermal flight hardware onto the spacecraft, 3) The preparation and implementation of testing the thermal flight via touch tests, resistance measurements and thermal vacuum testing
Summary of the 2017 Blockage Test in the 10- by 10-Foot Supersonic Wind Tunnel
A limited blockage study was performed in December 2017 to explore exceeding the current published blockage curve for the NASA Glenn 10- by 10-Foot (10x10) Supersonic Wind Tunnel (SWT) at two discrete operating conditions. For the two points tested, the tunnel was found to start outside of the published starting limitations curve, above a certain threshold of Mach and stagnation pressure. Blockage theory was reviewed to further understand these results. In order to gain a firm understanding of the aerodynamic effects a more-detailed follow up blockage study is recommended
