    3D spherical-cap fitting procedure for (truncated) sessile nano- and micro-droplets & -bubbles

    In the study of nanobubbles, nanodroplets or nanolenses immobilised on a substrate, a cross-section of a spherical-cap is widely applied to extract geometrical information from atomic force microscopy (AFM) topographic images. In this paper, we have developed a comprehensive 3D spherical cap fitting procedure (3D-SCFP) to extract morphologic characteristics of complete or truncated spherical caps from AFM images. Our procedure integrates several advanced digital image analysis techniques to construct a 3D spherical cap model, from which the geometrical parameters of the nanostructures are extracted automatically by a simple algorithm. The procedure takes into account all valid data points in the construction of the 3D spherical cap model to achieve high fidelity in morphology analysis. We compare our 3D fitting procedure with the commonly used 2D cross-sectional profile fitting method to determine the contact angle of a complete spherical cap and a truncated spherical cap. The results from 3D-SCFP are consistent and accurate, while 2D fitting is unavoidably arbitrary in selection of the cross-section and has a much lower number of data points on which the fitting can be based, which in addition is biased to the top of the spherical cap. We expect that the developed 3D spherical-cap fitting procedure will find many applications in imaging analysis.Comment: 23 pages, 7 figure

    Effects of urban green belts on the air temperature, humidity and air quality

    As urbanization increases, designing green space that offers ecological benefits is an increasingly important goal of urban planning. As a linear green space in an urban environment, green belts lower air temperature, increase relative humidity, and improve air quality. To quantify the ecological effects of urban green belts and to identify a critical width for effective urban green belts, we analysed the width of urban green belts in terms of their effects on air temperature (T), relative humidity (RH), concentration of negative air ions (NAI) and bacteria rate (BR). The air T, RH and NAI from 8:00 to 18:00 and BR at 9:00 over seven days were investigated on six widths of green belts (0–10 m, 10–20 m, 20–30 m, 30–40 m, 40–50 m and over 50 m) along the west Fourth Ring Road of Beijing in April, July, October and December 2009. We found that (1) the T-RH benefits increased with the width of the green belts, and the 6 m belt had the smallest effect on T-RH, followed by the 16 m and 27 m belts, whereas the effect was obvious with the 34 m belt and conspicuous and stable with the 42 m belt (approximately 80% green coverage) (P < 0.05); (2) the critical width reference value of urban green belts for an obvious effect on the increase in NAI concentration was approximately 42 m (approximately 80% green coverage) (P < 0.05) and the NAI concentration increased with the width of green belts even in July; and (3) the positive effect on the decrease in the BR was greater than the negative effect, the BR decreased with the green belt width and the changes in the brs were stable with the 34 m belt. The results of this study may help urban planners and designers achieve urban green space designs that optimize ecological effects and cultural benefits

    Enhancing thermal stability and mechanical properties of lyotropic liquid crystals through incorporation of a polymerizable surfactant.

    We present a facile method to prepare thermally stable and mechanically robust crosslinked lyotropic liquid crystals (LLCs) through incorporation of a polymerizable amphiphile into a binary LLC system comprising commercially available surfactant Brij 97 and water. Thermal stability and mechanical properties of the polymerized LLCs were significantly enhanced after polymerization of the incorporated polymerizable surfactant. The effect of incorporating a polymerizable amphiphile on the phase behavior of the LLC system was studied in detail. In situ photo-rheology was used to monitor the change in the mechanical properties of the LLCs, namely the storage modulus, loss modulus, and viscosity, upon polymerization. The retention of the LLC nanostructures was evaluated by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The ability to control the thermal stability and mechanical strength of LLCs simply by adding a polymerizable amphiphile, without tedious organic synthesis or harsh polymerization conditions, could prove highly advantageous in the preparation of robust nanomaterials with well-defined periodic structures

    Azobenzene moiety variation directing self-assembly and photoresponsive behavior of azo-surfactants

    The effect of varying the position of the azobenzene group within two comparable photoresponsive amphiphiles on their capability to form lyotropic liquid crystals (LLCs) was investigated in detail in this study. Two photoresponsive amphiphiles having comparable structures were designed and synthesized consisting of hydrophilic oligooxyethylene units, a hydrophobic alkyl chain and a light-sensitive azobenzene moiety. When the azobenzene group was located in the middle of the hydrophobic alkyl chain, multiple LLC phases were observed at various water contents in the azo-surfactant&ndash;water binary system. In contrast, when the azobenzene group was directly attached to the hydrophilic domain, the azo-surfactant&ndash;water binary system exhibited only lamellar phases. The temperature dependence of these self-organised nanostructures was also investigated by the combination of small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and rheology. Under alternating UV and visible light irradiation, reversible trans&ndash;cis photoisomerization of the azobenzene group occurred efficiently in dilute solution for both azo-surfactants. However, only photoisomerization of the surfactant possessing the azobenzene group localized in the middle of the alkyl chain induced significant changes in the self-assembled structure and its bulk properties. This study demonstrates that self-assembly and photoresponsive behaviour of photosensitive amphiphiles is extremely sensitive to the position of the photoactive moiety within the surfactant molecular architecture.<br /

    Proteases (proteinases or peptidases) are a class of hydrolases that cleave peptide chains in proteins. Endopeptidases are a type of protease that hydrolyze the internal peptide bonds of proteins, forming shorter peptides; exopeptidases hydrolyze the terminal peptide bonds from the C-terminal or N-terminal, forming free amino acids. Microbial proteases are a popular instrument in many industrial applications. In this review, the classification, detection, identification, and sources of microbial proteases are systematically introduced, as well as their applications in food, detergents, waste treatment, and biotechnology processes in the industry fields. In addition, recent studies on techniques used to express heterologous microbial proteases are summarized to describe the process of studying proteases. Finally, future developmental trends for microbial proteases are discussed

    Associations between TyG-BMI and normal-high blood pressure values and hypertension: cross-sectional evidence from a non-diabetic population

    ObjectiveTriglyceride glucose body mass index (TyG-BMI) has been shown to be strongly associated with a variety of chronic diseases. However, little is known about the associations between TyG-BMI and normal-high blood pressure (BP) values and hypertension (HTN).MethodThe current study was cross-sectional in design and included 15,464 non-diabetic participants recruited between 1994 and 2016 in the NAGALA (NAfld in the Gifu Area, Longitudinal Analysis) study. Associations between TyG-BMI and normal-high BP values and HTN were assessed using multivariate logistic regression. The ability of the TyG index, BMI, and their combined index TyG-BMI to identify normal-high BP values and HTN was compared by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves.ResultsAmong the 15,464 eligible non-diabetic participants, 28.56% (4,416/15,464) and 6.23% (964/15,464) had normal-high BP values and HTN, respectively. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed positive correlations between BMI, TyG index, TyG-BMI and normal-high BP values/HTN; after standardized regression coefficients, TyG-BMI had the strongest association with normal-high BP values and HTN compared to BMI and TyG index. In the fully adjusted model, the odds ratio (OR) value corresponding to the relationship between TyG-BMI and HTN/normal-high BP values was 2.35; when TyG-BMI was used as a categorical variable, compared with the lowest quartile of TyG-BMI the regression coefficient for the association of the highest quartile of TyG-BMI with normal-high BP values increased by 426%, while the regression coefficient for the association with HTN increased by 527%. In further spline regression analysis, we also found that there was a linearly positive correlation between TyG-BMI and systolic BP/diastolic BP (SBP/DBP), which supported the linear trend between TyG-BMI and HTN/normal-high BP values (P-trend &lt;0.0001). In addition, ROC analysis showed that TyG-BMI had good diagnostic values for both normal-high BP values and HTN, and TyG index combined with BMI can significantly improve the ability of a single index to identify normal-high BP values and HTN.ConclusionIn the non-diabetic population, TyG-BMI showed a significant positive correlation with both normal-high BP values and HTN, and TyG-BMI was of higher value for the identification of both normal-high BP values and HTN compared to BMI and TyG index alone
