Relaxation of strained silicon on Si0.5Ge0.5 virtual substrates
Strain relaxation has been studied in tensile strained silicon layers grown on Si0.5Ge0.5 virtual substrates, for layers many times the critical thickness, using high resolution x-ray diffraction. Layers up to 30 nm thick were found to relax less than 2% by the glide of preexisting 60° dislocations. Relaxation is limited because many of these dislocations dissociate into extended stacking faults that impede the dislocation glide. For thicker layers, nucleated microtwins were observed, which significantly increased relaxation to 14%. All these tensile strained layers are found to be much more stable than layers with comparable compressive strain
Microphotonic parabolic light directors fabricated by two-photon lithography
We have fabricated microphotonic parabolic light directors using two-photon lithography, thin-film processing, and aperture formation by focused ion beam lithography. Optical transmission measurements through upright parabolic directors 22 μm high and 10 μm in diameter exhibit strong beam directivity with a beam divergence of 5.6°, in reasonable agreement with ray-tracing and full-field electromagnetic simulations. The results indicate the suitability of microphotonic parabolic light directors for producing collimated beams for applications in advanced solar cell and light-emitting diode designs
EDGE: a code to calculate diffusion of cosmic-ray electrons and their gamma-ray emission
The positron excess measured by PAMELA and AMS can only be explained if there
is one or several sources injecting them. Moreover, at the highest energies, it
requires the presence of nearby (hundreds of parsecs) and middle age
(maximum of hundreds of kyr) source. Pulsars, as factories of electrons
and positrons, are one of the proposed candidates to explain the origin of this
excess. To calculate the contribution of these sources to the electron and
positron flux at the Earth, we developed EDGE (Electron Diffusion and Gamma
rays to the Earth), a code to treat diffusion of electrons and compute their
diffusion from a central source with a flexible injection spectrum. We can
derive the source's gamma-ray spectrum, spatial extension, the all-electron
density in space and the electron and positron flux reaching the Earth. We
present in this contribution the fundamentals of the code and study how
different parameters affect the gamma-ray spectrum of a source and the electron

Misfit strain relaxation and dislocation formation in supercritical strained silicon on virtual substrates
Relaxation of strained silicon on 20% linear graded virtual substrates was quantified using high resolution x-ray diffraction and a defect etching technique. The thickness of strained silicon was varied between 10 and 180 nm. Relaxation was observed in layers below the critical thickness but increased to only 2% relaxation in the thickest layers even with annealings up to 950 °C. Cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy revealed stacking faults present in layers thicker than 25 nm, and nucleated 90° Shockley partial dislocations forming microtwins in the thickest layer. These features are implicated in the impediment of the relaxation process
Conserved but flexible modularity in the zebrafish skull: implications for craniofacial evolvability
Morphological variation is the outward manifestation of development and provides fodder for adaptive evolution. Because of this contingency, evolution is often thought to be biased by developmental processes and functional interactions among structures, which are statistically detectable through forms of covariance among traits. This can take the form of substructures of integrated traits, termed modules, which together comprise patterns of variational modularity. While modularity is essential to an understanding of evolutionary potential, biologists currently have little understanding of its genetic basis and its temporal dynamics over generations. To address these open questions, we compared patterns of craniofacial modularity among laboratory strains, defined mutant lines and a wild population of zebrafish ( ). Our findings suggest that relatively simple genetic changes can have profound effects on covariance, without greatly affecting craniofacial shape. Moreover, we show that instead of completely deconstructing the covariance structure among sets of traits, mutations cause shifts among seemingly latent patterns of modularity suggesting that the skull may be predisposed towards a limited number of phenotypes. This new insight may serve to greatly increase the evolvability of a population by providing a range of 'preset' patterns of modularity that can appear readily and allow for rapid evolution
Narratives of fathering young children in Britain: linking quantitative and qualitative analyses

Available from Taylor & Francis via the DOI in this record.The paper examines how in Britain the time fathers and couples spend in employment shifts in the first years of children’s lives, the conditions under which this happens and how fathers feel about and experience time with their families and time in paid work. In order to achieve these aims new longitudinal analysis of the UK Millennium Cohort Study (MCS) is carried out together with secondary analysis of narrative case studies drawn from a qualitative study of Fatherhood across the Generations. By linking these datasets the paper examines the potential for corroboration and complementarity between different types of data. Further, it seeks to show how qualitative cases corroborate, elaborate and expand on the main employment trajectories in the MCS population of fathers and how these extend understandings of fathers’ experience of time within families.This work was supported by the Economic and Social Research Council as a National Centre for Research Methods node, NOVELLA (Narratives of Varied Everyday Lives and Linked Approaches) [grant number ES/I025936/1]
