    Accounting Choices for Tangible Assets: A Study of Greek Firms

    The purpose of this paper is to investigate the choices of Greek firms regarding the measurement of an item of a fixed tangible asset subsequent to its initial recognition, including impairment recognition, under IAS 16 and IAS 36 using a sample of Greek firms for the years 2005, 2007 and 2009. Results indicate that the cost model is more likely to be adopted by the more leveraged firms. In addition, it has been examined the compliance of the sample firms with disclosure requirements of IAS 16 and IAS 36. It appears that the disclosure compliance of the sample firms with the disclosure requirements of IAS 16 and 36 is influenced by firm's choice of valuation method for the measurement of an item of a fixed tangible asset subsequent to its initial recognition. It appears that the firms that adopt the revaluation method exhibit lower compliance rates

    The strange-quark chemical potential as an experimentally accessible "order parameter" of the deconfinement phase transition for finite baryon-density

    We consider the change of the strange-quark chemical potential in the phase diagram of nuclear matter, employing the Wilson loop and scalar quark condensate order parameters, mass-scaled partition functions and enforcing flavor conservation. Assuming the region beyond the hadronic phase to be described by massive, correlated and interacting quarks, in the spirit of lattice and effective QCD calculations, we find the strange-quark chemical potential to change sign: from positive in the hadronic phase - to zero upon deconfinement - to negative in the partonic domain. We propose this change in the sign of the strange-quark chemical potential to be an experimentally accessible order parameter and a unique, concise and well-defined indication of the quark-deconfinement phase transition in nuclear matter.Comment: 22 pages, 14 figures within text, 2 figures(6,B3) as separate files.     Can central bankers’ talk predict bank stock returns? A machine learning approach

    We combine machine learning algorithms (ML) with textual analysis techniques to forecast bank stock returns. Our textual features are derived from press releases of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC). We show that ML models produce more accurate out-of-sample predictions than OLS regressions, and that textual features can be more informative inputs than traditional financial variables. However, we achieve the highest predictive accuracy by training ML models on a combination of both financial variables and textual data. Importantly, portfolios constructed using the predictions of our best performing ML model consistently outperform their benchmarks. Our findings add to the scarce literature on bank return predictability and have important implications for investors

    Anterior mediastinal masses are relatively uncommon and include a wide variety of lesions. Lymphomas account for 25% of anterior mediastinal masses. Lymphomas and other haematological malignancies are associated with pericardial effusion. There are also cases where a cardiac tamponade occurred. The aim of the case reported herein is to discuss the surgical approach and particularly the mediastinal debulking as an adjunct to systematic treatment for haematological diseases presenting as an anterior mediastinal mass responsible for a cardiac tamponade

    Electric charge correlations were studied for p+p, C+C, Si+Si and centrality selected Pb+Pb collisions at sqrt s_NN = 17.2$ GeV with the NA49 large acceptance detector at the CERN-SPS. In particular, long range pseudo-rapidity correlations of oppositely charged particles were measured using the Balance Function method. The width of the Balance Function decreases with increasing system size and centrality of the reactions. This decrease could be related to an increasing delay of hadronization in central Pb+Pb collisions

    We present performance results of the final prototype for the CASTOR quartz-tungsten sampling calorimeter, to be installed in the very forward region of the CMS experiment at the LHC. The energy linearity and resolution, the uniformity, as well as the spatial resolution of the prototype to electromagnetic and hadronic showers are studied with E=E= 10--200 GeV electrons, E=E= 20--350 GeV pions, and E=E= 50, 150 GeV muons in beam tests carried out at CERN/SPS in 2007
