Reliable Multi-label Classification: Prediction with Partial Abstention
In contrast to conventional (single-label) classification, the setting of
multilabel classification (MLC) allows an instance to belong to several classes
simultaneously. Thus, instead of selecting a single class label, predictions
take the form of a subset of all labels. In this paper, we study an extension
of the setting of MLC, in which the learner is allowed to partially abstain
from a prediction, that is, to deliver predictions on some but not necessarily
all class labels. We propose a formalization of MLC with abstention in terms of
a generalized loss minimization problem and present first results for the case
of the Hamming loss, rank loss, and F-measure, both theoretical and
experimental.Comment: 19 pages, 12 figure
Random matrices: Law of the determinant
Let be an by random matrix whose entries are independent real
random variables with mean zero, variance one and with subexponential tail. We
show that the logarithm of satisfies a central limit theorem. More
precisely, \begin{eqnarray*}\sup_{x\in {\mathbf {R}}}\biggl|{\mathbf
{P}}\biggl(\frac{\log(|\det A_n|)-({1}/{2})\log (n-1)!}{\sqrt{({1}/{2})\log
n}}\le x\biggr)-{\mathbf {P}}\bigl(\mathbf {N}(0,1)\le
x\bigr)\biggr|\\\qquad\le\log^{-{1}/{3}+o(1)}n.\end{eqnarray*}Comment: Published in at http://dx.doi.org/10.1214/12-AOP791 the Annals of

Almost periodic solutions of periodic linear partial functional differential equations
We study conditions for the abstract periodic linear functional differential
equation to have almost periodic with the same
structure of frequencies as . The main conditions are stated in terms of the
spectrum of the monodromy operator associated with the equation and the
frequencies of the forcing term . The obtained results extend recent results
on the subject. A discussion on how the results could be extended to the case
when depends on is given.Comment: 17 page
An analysis of involuntary excess reserves, monetary policy and risk-taking behaviour of Chinese banks
In this paper, we examine the effects of monetary policy on the risk-taking behaviour of Chinese banks in the presence of involuntary excess reserves based on a sample of 95 banks. We find that involuntary excess reserves lead to more aggressive risk-taking suggesting that large involuntary excess reserves stimulate the rapid expansion of credit and the price bubble in the Chinese financial market. However, banks with larger involuntary excess reserves tend to reduce risk-taking more rapidly under the tightening monetary policy regime. The paper sheds light on the effectiveness of government monetary policy in reducing the risk-taking behaviour of banks in an emerging market where involuntary excess reserves are present
