Characterization of photomultiplier tubes in a novel operation mode for Secondary Emission Ionization Calorimetry
Hamamatsu single anode R7761 and multi-anode R5900-00-M16 Photomultiplier
Tubes have been characterized for use in a Secondary Emission (SE) Ionization
Calorimetry study. SE Ionization Calorimetry is a novel technique to measure
electromagnetic shower particles in extreme radiation environments. The
different operation modes used in these tests were developed by modifying the
conventional PMT bias circuit. These modifications were simple changes to the
arrangement of the voltage dividers of the baseboard circuits. The PMTs with
modified bases, referred to as operating in SE mode, are used as an SE detector
module in an SE calorimeter prototype, and placed between absorber materials
(Fe, Cu, Pb, W, etc.). Here, the technical design of different operation modes,
as well as the characterization measurements of both SE modes and the
conventional PMT mode are reported
Four-fermion production in collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 130 and 136 GeV
Four-fermion events have been selected in a data sample of 5.8 pb**-1 collected with the ALEPH detector at centre-of-mass energies of 130 and 136 GeV. The final states l^+l^- qqbar, l^+l^-l^+l^-, nunubar qqbar, and nunubar l^+l^- have been examined. Five events are observed in the data, in agreement with the Standard Model predictions of 6.67 +/- 0.38 events from four-fermion processes and 0.14+0.19-0.05 from background processes
Four-jet angular distributions and color charge measurements: leading order versus next-to-leading order
We present the next-to-leading order perturbative QCD prediction to the
four-jet angular distributions used by experimental collaborations at LEP for
measuring the QCD color charge factors. We compare our results to ALEPH data
corrected to parton level. We perform a leading order ``measurement'' of the
QCD color factor ratios by fitting the leading order perturbative predictions
to the next-to-leading order result. Our result shows that in an experimental
analysis for measuring the color charge factors the use of the O()
QCD predictions instead of the O() results may shift the center of
the fit by a relative factor of 1+2\as in the direction.Comment: 14 pages, 10 tables, 5 figures, revtex, eps style
The BFKL Pomeron in 2+1 Dimensional QCD
We investigate the high-energy scattering in the spontaneously broken Yang -
Mills gauge theory in 2+1 space--time dimensions and present the exact solution
of the leading BFKL equation. The solution is constructed in terms of
special functions using the earlier results of two of us (L.N.L. and L.S.). The
analytic properties of the -channel partial wave as functions of the angular
momentum and momentum transfer have been studied. We find in the angular
momentum plane: (i) a Regge pole whose trajectory has an intercept larger than
1 and (ii) a fixed cut with the rightmost singularity located at . The
massive Yang - Mills theory can be considered as a theoretical model for the
(non-perturbative) Pomeron. We study the main structure and property of the
solution including the Pomeron trajectory at momentum transfer different from
zero. The relation to the results of M. Li and C-I. Tan for the massless case

Search for the Supersymmetric Partner of the Top-Quark in Collisions at
We report on a search for the supersymmetric partner of the top quark (stop)
produced in events using of
collisions at recorded with the Collider Detector at
Fermilab. In the case of a light stop squark, the decay of the top quark into
stop plus the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) could have a significant
branching ratio. The observed events are consistent with Standard Model production and decay. Hence, we set limits on the branching ratio of
the top quark decaying into stop plus LSP, excluding branching ratios above 45%
for a LSP mass up to 40 {\rm GeV/c}.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure
Measurement of the ttbar Production Cross Section in ppbar Collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV
We present a measurement of the top quark pair production cross section in
ppbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV using 318 pb^{-1} of data collected with
the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We select ttbar decays into the final states
e nu + jets and mu nu + jets, in which at least one b quark from the t-quark
decays is identified using a secondary vertex-finding algorithm. Assuming a top
quark mass of 178 GeV/c^2, we measure a cross section of 8.7 +-0.9 (stat)
+1.1-0.9 (syst) pb. We also report the first observation of ttbar with
significance greater than 5 sigma in the subsample in which both b quarks are
identified, corresponding to a cross section of 10.1 +1.6-1.4(stat)+2.0-1.3

Combined search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying to a bb pair using the full CDF data set
We combine the results of searches for the standard model Higgs boson based
on the full CDF Run II data set obtained from sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV p-pbar
collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron corresponding to an integrated luminosity
of 9.45/fb. The searches are conducted for Higgs bosons that are produced in
association with a W or Z boson, have masses in the range 90-150 GeV/c^2, and
decay into bb pairs. An excess of data is present that is inconsistent with the
background prediction at the level of 2.5 standard deviations (the most
significant local excess is 2.7 standard deviations).Comment: To be published in Phys. Rev. Lett (v2 contains minor updates based

Search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu channel in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
A search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu decay
channel, where l = e or mu, in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7
TeV is presented. The data were collected at the LHC, with the CMS detector,
and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 inverse femtobarns. No
significant excess is observed above the background expectation, and upper
limits are set on the Higgs boson production cross section. The presence of the
standard model Higgs boson with a mass in the 270-440 GeV range is excluded at
