Integrating fish resources to agro-ecosystem analyses
In October 2005, a consortium of partners led by the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) proposed a project aimed at integrating fish resources management in agricultural management in the Tonle Sap area. This 2-years project assistance was accepted for funding by the Challenge Program on Water and Food and started in January 2008. The overall goal of this project is to improve allocation and use of water in combined farming and fishing systems in order to enhance food security of rural communities and water productivity. The general objectives of the Fisheries component are: 1) to contribute to the review of existing fisheries and aquaculture information, assessment and data collection systems and existing databases from a fisheries perspective 2) to determine key questions that could be asked at the commune level that would enable the identification of fisheries issues for different agroecosystem zones. These would include both threats and potential threats to fisheries based on key ecological variables and opportunities that fisheries and aquaculture could represent in local livelihoods.Research, Lake fisheries, Agropisciculture, Ecosystems, Analysis, Cambodia, Tonle Sap L.,
Superconductivity under pressure in the Dirac semimetal PdTe2
The Dirac semimetal PdTe was recently reported to be a type-I
superconductor (1.64 K, mT) with unusual
superconductivity of the surface sheath. We here report a high-pressure study,
GPa, of the superconducting phase diagram extracted from
ac-susceptibility and transport measurements on single crystalline samples.
shows a pronounced non-monotonous variation with a maximum 1.91 K around 0.91 GPa, followed by a gradual decrease to 1.27 K at 2.5 GPa.
The critical field of bulk superconductivity in the limit ,
, follows a similar trend and consequently the -curves
under pressure collapse on a single curve: .
Surface superconductivity is robust under pressure as demonstrated by the large
superconducting screening signal that persists for applied dc-fields . Surprisingly, for GPa the superconducting transition
temperature at the surface is larger than of the bulk. Therefore
surface superconductivity may possibly have a non-trivial nature and is
connected to the topological surface states detected by ARPES. We compare the
measured pressure variation of with recent results from band structure
calculations and discuss the importance of a Van Hove singularity.Comment: manuscript 9 pages with 8 figures + supplemental material 3 pages

Performance Evaluation of Potential Field Based Distributed Motion Planning Methods for Robot Collectives
GPU-based multiple back propagation for big data problems
The big data era has become known for its abundance in rapidly generated data of varying formats and sizes. With this awareness, interest in data analytics and more specifically predictive analytics has received increased attention lately. However, the massive sample sizes and high dimensionality peculiar with these datasets has challenged the overall performance of one of the most important components of predictive analytics of our present time, Machine Learning. Given that dimensionality reduction has been heavily applied to the problems of high dimensionality, this work presents an improved scheme of GPU based Multiple Back Propagation (MBP) with feature selection for big high dimensional data problems. Elastic Net was used for automatic feature selection of high dimensional biomedical datasets before classification with GPU based MBP and experimental results show an improved performance over the previous scheme with MBP
Orthogonal polynomials of discrete variable and Lie algebras of complex size matrices
We give a uniform interpretation of the classical continuous Chebyshev's and
Hahn's orthogonal polynomials of discrete variable in terms of Feigin's Lie
algebra gl(N), where N is any complex number. One can similarly interpret
Chebyshev's and Hahn's q-polynomials and introduce orthogonal polynomials
corresponding to Lie superlagebras.
We also describe the real forms of gl(N), quasi-finite modules over gl(N),
and conditions for unitarity of the quasi-finite modules. Analogs of tensors
over gl(N) are also introduced.Comment: 25 pages, LaTe
Equilibrium onions?
We demonstrate the possibility of a stable equilibrium multi-lamellar ("onion") phase in pure lamellar systems (no excess solvent) due to a sufficiently negative Gaussian curvature modulus. The onion phase is stabilized by non-linear elastic moduli coupled to a polydisperse size distribution (Apollonian packing) to allow space-filling without appreciable elastic distortion. This model is compared to experiments on copolymer-decorated lamellar surfactant systems, with reasonable qualitative agreement
Bending Performance of Timber Beam Strengthened with Passive Prestressing
Prestressing technology and its application is common in concrete design and construction particularly in Malaysia and most parts of the world. However, prestress strengthening in timber is rare and not widely applied especially in Malaysia. Application of prestressing in timber has the potential to allow the use of longer span with reduced cross-sectional size and simultaneously exhibiting some level of ductility through the prestressing rod since timber material is susceptible to brittle tensile failure. This paper highlights exploratory research into the extent of bending performance enhancement in Malaysian Kempas species timber beam strengthened by way of passive prestressing. The research was conducted to investigate the change in bending strength and moment capacity of timber beam with passive prestressing rods installed at different lever arm positions, and the enhancement of moment capacity of timber beam with and without passive prestressing. Five Kempas timber specimen configurations with size of 40 mm (b) × 90 mm (d) × 900 mm (l) were prepared for four-point bending tests, and their bending behaviours were evaluated. The timber beam with passive prestressing steel rods applied at tension side bottom fibre of timber beam exhibited the greatest enhancement in bending performance and stiffness. The improvement of bending performance ranges from 1.1 to 1.5 times greater compared to the timber beam without prestressing steel rods. The improvement of stiffness in prestressed timber beam is up to 11% at service limit state and a reduced rate of stiffness degradation is prominent
Practical Aspects of Automatic Orientation Analysis of Micrographs
Techniques to analyse the orientation of particulate materials as observed in the scanning electron microscope are reviewed in this paper. Emphasis is placed on digital imaging, processing, and analysis methods, but many secondary electron images are not amenable to traditional image processing as adequate thresholding is often difficult to achieve. Evaluation of the intensity gradient at each pixel offers an alternative approach, and this method is described in detail including the latest developments to generalize the technique. Practical points in the acquisition, processing and analysis of the images are considered and several images, including both synthetically generated and actual back-scattered images of soil particle arrangements are presented. A discussion of methods to display the results is included as are possible future developments
