Controlling a spillover pathway with the molecular cork effect
Spillover of reactants from one active site to another is important in heterogeneous catalysis and has recently been shown to enhance hydrogen storage in a variety of materials. The spillover of hydrogen is notoriously hard to detect or control. We report herein that the hydrogen spillover pathway on a Pd/Cu alloy can be controlled by reversible adsorption of a spectator molecule. Pd atoms in the Cu surface serve as hydrogen dissociation sites from which H atoms can spillover onto surrounding Cu regions. Selective adsorption of CO at these atomic Pd sites is shown to either prevent the uptake of hydrogen on, or inhibit its desorption from, the surface. In this way, the hydrogen coverage on the whole surface can be controlled by molecular adsorption at a minority site, which we term a ‘molecular cork’ effect. We show that the molecular cork effect is present during a surface catalysed hydrogenation reaction and illustrate how it can be used as a method for controlling uptake and release of hydrogen in a model storage syste
Spatial variation in the fine-structure constant -- new results from VLT/UVES
(abridged) We present a new analysis of a large sample of quasar
absorption-line spectra obtained using UVES (the Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle
Spectrograph) on the VLT (Very Large Telescope) in Chile. In the VLT sample
(154 absorbers), we find evidence that alpha increases with increasing
cosmological distance from Earth. However, as previously shown, the Keck sample
(141 absorbers) provided evidence for a smaller alpha in the distant absorption
clouds. Upon combining the samples an apparent variation of alpha across the
sky emerges which is well represented by an angular dipole model pointing in
the direction RA=(17.3 +/- 1.0) hr, dec. = (-61 +/- 10) deg, with amplitude
(0.97 +0.22/-0.20) x 10^(-5). The dipole model is required at the 4.1 sigma
statistical significance level over a simple monopole model where alpha is the
same across the sky (but possibly different to the current laboratory value).
The data sets reveal a number of remarkable consistencies: various data cuts
are consistent and there is consistency in the overlap region of the Keck and
VLT samples. Assuming a dipole-only (i.e. no-monopole) model whose amplitude
grows proportionally with `lookback-time distance' (r=ct, where t is the
lookback time), the amplitude is (1.1 +/- 0.2) x 10^(-6) GLyr^(-1) and the
model is significant at the 4.2 sigma confidence level over the null model
[Delta alpha]/alpha = 0). We apply robustness checks and demonstrate that the
dipole effect does not originate from a small subset of the absorbers or
spectra. We present an analysis of systematic effects, and are unable to
identify any single systematic effect which can emulate the observed variation

The Maximizer: Clarifying Merton's Theories of Anomie and Strain
Robert Merton's (1957) theories of anomie and strain are among the most widely examined theories of criminality. Messner and Rosenfeld's (1994) theory of institutional anomie built on Merton's conception of anomie, delineating how specific institutions lead to conditions of anomie and criminality. Cloward and Ohlin's (1961) theory of differential opportunity built upon Merton's strain theory, underscoring the fact that those involved in illegitimate means of opportunity require a set of learned skills as do those involved in legitimate means. In this tradition, the present paper further expands Merton's theories of anomie and strain, suggesting that Merton's categories of conformist and innovator are not mutually exclusive. In fact, some individuals combine both legitimate and illegitimate means of opportunity in pursuit of the American Dream. The Maximizer, the authors suggest, merges elements of both the conformist and the innovator (i.e. legitimate and illegitimate means). SGAS 143845.1+145407: A Big, Cool Starburst at Redshift 0.816
We present the discovery and a detailed multi-wavelength study of a
strongly-lensed luminous infrared galaxy at z=0.816. Unlike most known lensed
galaxies discovered at optical or near-infrared wavelengths this lensed source
is red, r-Ks = 3.9 [AB], which the data presented here demonstrate is due to
ongoing dusty star formation. The overall lensing magnification (a factor of
17) facilitates observations from the blue optical through to 500micron, fully
capturing both the stellar photospheric emission as well as the re-processed
thermal dust emission. We also present optical and near-IR spectroscopy. These
extensive data show that this lensed galaxy is in many ways typical of
IR-detected sources at z~1, with both a total luminosity and size in accordance
with other (albeit much less detailed) measurements in samples of galaxies
observed in deep fields with the Spitzer telescope. Its far-infrared spectral
energy distribution is well-fit by local templates that are an order of
magnitude less luminous than the lensed galaxy; local templates of comparable
luminosity are too hot to fit. Its size (D~7kpc) is much larger than local
luminous infrared galaxies, but in line with sizes observed for such galaxies
at z~1. The star formation appears uniform across this spatial scale. In this
source, the luminosity of which is typical of sources that dominate the cosmic
infrared background, we find that star formation is spatially extended and well
organised, quite unlike the compact merger-driven starbursts which are typical
for sources of this luminosity at z~0.Comment: 18 pages, 10 figure
Mechanical properties of α-tricalcium phosphate-based bone cements incorporating regenerative biomaterials for filling bone defects exposed to low mechanical loads
Calcium phosphate-based cements with enhanced regenerative potential are promising biomaterials for the healing of bone defects. With a view to the use of such cements for low load bearing applications such as sinus augmentation or filling extraction sites, we have prepared α-tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP)-based bone cements including materials that we would expect to improve their regenerative potential, and describe the mechanical properities of the resulting formulations herein. Formulations incorporated α-TCP, hydroxyapatite, biopolymer-thickened wetting agents, sutures, and platelet poor plasma. The mechanical properties of the composites were composition dependent, and optimized formulations had clinically relevant mechanical properties. Such calcium phosphate-based cements have potential as replacements for cements such as those based on polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA)
Genomic screening in family-based association testing
Due to the recent gains in the availability of single-nucleotide polymorphism data, genome-wide association testing has become feasible. It is hoped that this additional data may confirm the presence of disease susceptibility loci, and identify new genetic determinants of disease. However, the problem of multiple comparisons threatens to diminish any potential gains from this newly available data. To circumvent the multiple comparisons issue, we utilize a recently developed screening technique using family-based association testing. This screening methodology allows for the identification of the most promising single-nucleotide polymorphisms for testing without biasing the nominal significance level of our test statistic. We compare the results of our screening technique across univariate and multivariate family-based association tests. From our analyses, we observe that the screening technique, applied to different settings, is fairly consistent in identifying optimal markers for testing. One of the identified markers, TSC0047225, was significantly associated with both the ttth1 (p = 0.004) and ttth1-ttth4 (p = 0.004) phenotype(s). We find that both univariate- and multivariate-based screening techniques are powerful tools for detecting an association
Comparison of linkage and association strategies for quantitative traits using the COGA dataset
Genome scans using dense single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data have recently become a reality. It is thought that the increase in information content for linkage analysis as a result of the denser scans will help refine previously identified linkage regions and possibly identify new regions not identifiable using the sparser, microsatellite scans. In the context of the dense SNP scans, it is also possible to consider association strategies to provide even more information about potential regions of interest. To circumvent the multiple-testing issues inherent in association analysis, we use a recently developed strategy, implemented in PBAT, which screens the data to identify the optimal SNPs for testing, without biasing the nominal significance level. We compare the results from the PBAT analysis to that of quantitative linkage analysis on chromosome 4 using the Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism data, as released through Genetic Analysis Workshop 14
