THE ROLE OF STUDENTS MOTIVATIONAL SELF-REGULATION IN STRUCTURE III
One of the important factors that influence the language learning, especially learning the basic rule of a language, is motivation. Many studies have tried to find out the correlation between motivation and self-regulation with the students' academic performance and they find out that both motivation and learning language are correlated so much. Thus, this paper specifically tried to find out the role of students motivational self-regulation with the students learning strategy. This research employed quantitative approach by employing survey method using observation sheet, questionnaire, and interview on some participants. The results of this study showed that the students motivation was high but they cannot self-regulate themselves.DOI: doi.org/10.24071/llt.2017.20020
A BORDERLAND DISCOURSE ANALYSIS ON ENGLISH LANGUAGE STUDENTS AND GRADUATES TEACHING BIPA
Teachers identity formation and tension in their working place have been the concern of many researchers and experts. However, the concern focuses only on the novice teachers who teach in the same subject as they are assigned to be. There is no sufficient research on identity tension which is faced specifically. This paper aims to find out the identity tension experienced by English language graduates teaching BIPA (Indonesian as a Foreign Language). This study employed a case study in order to generate a new understanding of this phenomena more deeply. Interview guideline with a semi-structured type of interview became the main instrument in this study. The participants of this study were five active Indonesian as foreign language teachers of Lembaga Bahasa Universitas Sanata Dharma. The study found out that teachers situatedness* became the main issue that influences teachers identity, compared to teachers multifaceted nature and their college. This study shows that, although the participants have been teaching for more than two years, or more, they mostly considered themselves still as English teachers.DOI: 10.24071/ijiet.2020.04010
The EFL Students’ Anxiety in an Online Public Speaking Class at an Indonesian University
One of the main challenges for English as Foreign Language (EFL) students in the public speaking class was Foreign Language Anxiety (FLA). Due to COVID-19, the public speaking class must be conducted online. This study aimed to examine the level of FLA in online public speaking classes and discovered the impacts on students' feelings upon joining the online public speaking class. This research used a quantitative research approach. The research was conducted in the online public speaking classes for fifth-semester students at Sanata Dharma University. The researchers took 50 students from the total population of 159 students in batch 2019. The level of FLA was investigated through the Modified Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (MFLCAS), and the impacts of FLA were explored using Modified Foreign Language Virtual Classroom Anxiety Scale (MFLVCAS). The results showed that students experienced a moderate level of FLA with a mean of 3,00 by three dimensions; Communication Apprehension (CA), Fear of Negative Evaluation (FNE), and Test Anxiety (TA). There were no adverse impacts from online public speaking classes related to FLVCAS. The online classroom setting did not bring another source of anxiety to the students
Students’ perception of social presence in the online EFL speaking class
Some students claim to suffer from anxiety, which lowers their self-esteem and causes them to feel anxious and uneasy while studying a foreign language. Establishing a social connection between the lecturer and the students is one of the possible solutions to this issue. The purpose of this study was to examine students' perceptions of social presence in an online speaking class and how social presence affects students' confidence in speaking class. This study employed quantitative research as its method of inquiry. The researchers distributed questionnaires to 159 students to collect data, but only 51 students responded. In addition, the researchers conducted interviews with a subset of participants to gain additional insight into the data required for the study. The research findings on students' perception of social presence in the online speaking class and the effect of social presence on students' confidence in speaking class revealed that students had a favorable perception of social presence in the online speaking class. The first finding's mean score was seventy-two point nine (x Ě… = 72.9). The findings demonstrated that social presence influences students' self-confidence, encourages them to learn more, and assists students in improving their speaking ability in speaking class
Utilizing M-Reader for Extensive Reading: Implications for Seminarian Identity at Mataloko Seminary
Introduced in 2021, M-Reader is a digital application designed to promote Extensive Reading. Mataloko Seminary, recognizing its potential, has employed M-Reader to enhance both student literacy and identity formation. With this context in mind, this research sought to answer two pivotal questions: (1) How has Mataloko Seminary integrated Extensive Reading into its curriculum? and (2) To what extent does Extensive Reading via M-Reader influence the identity of seminarians on their journey to priesthood? Employing a narrative inquiry methodology, the study meticulously examined the application of M-Reader in extensive reading practices and its consequent impact on seminarian identity. Data was meticulously collated through semi-structured interviews with three students from grades 10 and 12, all hailing from Mataloko. This data, systematically categorized and analyzed using Microsoft Excel, revealed that M-Reader-supported extensive reading at Mataloko Seminary adheres to ten established principles of extensive reading. Furthermore, the program emerged as a pivotal tool in molding the seminarians' identity across four critical dimensions: human, intellectual, pastoral, and spiritual. These findings underscore the potential benefits for other educational institutions targeting comprehensive identity development: the incorporation of digital extensive reading tools like M-Reader can be a game-changer
Investigating The Implementation of ICT In Education Reformation: National Instructor Teachers’ Perspectives
To facilitate quality teachers to support individual learning and encourage students to use technology, the Indonesian Ministry of Education has launched the National Instructor Teacher Program. Although the primary objective of the program is not limited to ICT, the instructor teachers’ existence is driven by the demand for technology use in classrooms. This qualitative paper aims to investigate National Instructor Teachers’ perspectives toward the use of ICT in education. Data were gathered by interviewing two National Instructor teachers from two provinces, namely Jawa Tengah and Yogyakarta. The results of this study showed that National Instructor teachers had a positive attitude towards the use of ICT. They were able to share and collaborate with other teachers and could find their own solutions related to the barriers in implementing ICT in their classes. The results of this study suggest that the government take a different approach in implementing the policy and support teachers forum to encourage ICT usage in the classroom and teachers’ autonomy
Pelatihan Komunikasi Bahasa Inggris Aktif dengan Metode Role Play untuk Karyawan Melcosh Café dan Glamcamp
Melcosh Café dan Glamcamp yang telah tujuh tahun berdiri di Kawasan Wisata Kaliurang, Yogyakarta semakin memperluas pasarnya. Kini, bisnis café tersebut telah merambah ke pasar internasional, di mana jumlah kunjungan dari customer mancanegara semakin bertambah dan konsisten. Untuk dapat melayani customer mancanegara, para karyawan di Melcosh Café & Glamcamp perlu memiliki kemampuan komunikasi bahasa Inggris aktif. Untuk membantu menjawab kebutuhan tersebut, tim pengabdi dari prodi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Universitas Sanata Dharma menyelenggarakan pelatihan komunikasi bahasa Inggris aktif dengan metode role play bagi karyawan Melcosh Café dan Glamcamp. Dengan modul yang dikembangkan secara khusus untuk konteks bisnis resto dan hospitality industry, kegiatan pelatihan yang berbasis role play dilaksanakan dalam kurun waktu satu bulan dengan jumlah total delapan pertemuan. Setelah menjalani pelatihan intensif selama satu bulan, keempat belas orang peserta pelatihan yang terdiri dari barista, waiter, cook, customer service, dan staf operasional dapat meningkatkan kemampuan bahasa Inggris mereka dari level pasif menjadi aktif, khususnya dalam konteks melayani dan menangani kebutuhan pelanggan mancanegara di café dan glamcamp. Hasil akhir pengabdian masyarakat ini menunjukkan bahwa pelatihan bahasa Inggris dengan metode role play terbukti telah memberikan dampak positif bagi perkembangan kompetensi berbahasa Inggris para karyawan Melcosh Café & Glamcamp yang merupakan salah satu faktor penunjang pengembangan bisnis perusahaan
The Use of Code Switching in General English Classes for Non-English Department Students in Indonesia
The issue of the use of code switching as instructional languages in the class has already become a worldwide concern. Some experts may say that it is beneficial while others believe that it is not since it may become the interference for the learning. Through this paper, the researchers want to investigate the use of code switching in General English Classes for non-English Department of Sanata Dharma University. Employing a quantitative approach, specifically observation method by recording the class activity, this study tries to find out the types and analyse code switching employed by lecturers in the classes. The data analyses revealed that tag switching, intra-sentential and inter-sentential code switching are employed by lecturers and the code switching itself functions as the topic switch, repetitive and affective function. The inter-sentential code switching was mostly used by the lecturer and it mostly served as a repetitive function to explain and show their affection to student
