Correlated ground based observations in support of the HEAO-1 X-ray observatory
Using X-ray and optical photometry of UBVRI fluxes, energetic compact extragalactic sources were studied, such as BL Lacerta (Lac) and BL Lac objects-Markarian (Mrk) 421, Mrk 501, and B2 1308+32. BL Lac and BL Lac objects were found to have predominantly nonthermal spectrums. Photometric and spectroscopic properties of X Persei, an unusual Be star associated with an intrinsically weak X-ray source, were also studied. Both its X-ray and optical emission show complex variability on many different time scales
The Search for Neutrino-Antineutrino Mixing Resulting from Lorentz Invariance Violation using neutrino interactions in MINOS
We searched for a sidereal modulation in the rate of neutrinos produced by
the NuMI beam and observed by the MINOS far detector. The detection of such
harmonic signals could be a signature of neutrino-antineutrino mixing due to
Lorentz and CPT violation as described by the Standard Model Extension
framework. We found no evidence for these sidereal signals and we placed limits
on the coefficients in this theory describing the effect. This is the first
report of limits on these neutrino-antineutrino mixing coefficients.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures, 3 table
Testing Lorentz and CPT Invariance with MINOS Near Detector Neutrinos
We present an analysis designed to search for Lorentz and CPT violations as
predicted by the SME framework using the charged current neutrino events in the
MINOS near detector. In particular we develop methods to identify periodic
variations in the normalized number of charged current neutrino events as a
function of sidereal phase. To test these methods, we simulated a set of 1,000
experiments without Lorentz and CPT violation signals using the standard MINOS
Monte Carlo. We performed an FFT on each of the simulated experiments to find
the distribution of powers in the sidereal phase diagram without a signal. We
then injected a signal of increasing strength into the sidereal neutrino
oscillation probability until we found a 5 deviation from the mean in
the FFT power spectrum. By this method, we can establish upper limits for the
Lorentz and CPT violating terms in the SME.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, CPT'07 Conference proceeding
Relativistic jet models for the BL Lacertae object Mrk 421 during three epochs of observation
Coordinated observation of the nearby BL Lacertae object Mrk 421 obtained during May 1980, January 1984, and March 1984 are described. These observations give a time-frozen picture of the continuous spectrum of Mrk 421 at X-ray, ultraviolet, optical, and radio wavelengths. The observed spectra have been fitted to an inhomogeneous relativistic jet model. In general, the models reproduce the data well. Many of the observed differences during the three epochs can be attributed to variations in the opening angle of the jet and in the angle that the jet makes to the line of sight. The jet models obtained here are compared with the homogeneous, spherically symmetric, synchrotron self-Compton models for this source. The models are also compared with the relativistic jet models obtained for other active galactic nuclei
A Randomized Depression Prevention Trial Comparing Interpersonal Psychotherapy—Adolescent Skills Training To Group Counseling In Schools
Given the rise in depression disorders in adolescence, it is important to develop and study depression prevention programs for this age group. The current study examined the efficacy of Interpersonal Psychotherapy-Adolescent Skills Training (IPT-AST), a group prevention program for adolescent depression, in comparison to group programs that are typically delivered in school settings. In this indicated prevention trial, 186 adolescents with elevated depression symptoms were randomized to receive IPT-AST delivered by research staff or group counseling (GC) delivered by school counselors. Hierarchical linear modeling examined differences in rates of change in depressive symptoms and overall functioning from baseline to the 6-month follow-up assessment. Cox regression compared rates of depression diagnoses. Adolescents in IPT-AST showed significantly greater improvements in self-reported depressive symptoms and evaluator-rated overall functioning than GC adolescents from baseline to the 6-month follow-up. However, there were no significant differences between the two conditions in onset of depression diagnoses. Although both intervention conditions demonstrated significant improvements in depressive symptoms and overall functioning, results indicate that IPT-AST has modest benefits over groups run by school counselors which were matched on frequency and duration of sessions. In particular, IPT-AST outperformed GC in reduction of depressive symptoms and improvements in overall functioning. These findings point to the clinical utility of this depression prevention program, at least in the short-term. Additional follow-up is needed to determine the long-term effects of IPT-AST, relative to GC, particularly in preventing depression onset
A Novel Use of Light Guides and Wavelength Shifting Plates for the Detection of Scintillation Photons in Large Liquid Argon Detectors
Scintillation light generated as charged particles traverse large liquid
argon detectors adds valuable information to studies of weakly-interacting
particles. This paper uses both laboratory measurements and cosmic ray data
from the Blanche dewar facility at Fermilab to characterize the efficiency of
the photon detector technology developed at Indiana University for the single
phase far detector of DUNE. The efficiency of this technology was found to be
0.48% at the readout end when the detector components were characterized with
laboratory measurements. A second determination of the efficiency using cosmic
ray tracks is in reasonable agreement with the laboratory determination. The
agreement of these two efficiency determinations supports the result that
minimum ionizing muons generate photons/MeV as

Metabolic reprogramming of the immune response in the tumor microenvironment
A Division of Cancer Biology, NCI sponsored workshop, Metabolic Reprogramming of the Immune Response in the Tumor Microenvironment, was held October 2nd in Bethesda, MD. The purpose of the workshop was to bring together cancer cell biologists and immunologists to explore the mechanistic relationships between the metabolic pathways used by cancer cells and anti-tumor immune cells and how this information could be used to improve cancer immunotherapy. At the conclusion of the workshop a general discussion focused on defining the major challenges and opportunities concerning the impact of metabolism on anti-tumor immunity and cancer immunotherapy as well as what tools, technologies, resources or community efforts are required to accelerate research in this area. Overall, future studies need to consider how cancer cell metabolic pathways differ from activated lymphocytes in order to define a therapeutic window for cancer therapy. Further, studies aimed at reprogramming the metabolic qualities of T cells with the goal of improving immunotherapy were considered a promising avenue
