Vibrational Frequencies of the 2p^2A^"_2 and 3d^2E^" States of the Triatomic Deuterium Molecule
We investigated the vibrational energies in the 2p^2A^"_2 and 3d^2E^" states
of the triatomic deuterium molecule D_3. The experiments were performed using a
fast neutral beam photoionization spectrometer recently developed at Freiburg.
A depletion type optical double-resonance scheme using two pulsed dye lasers
was applied. The measured vibrational frequencies of the 2p^2A^"_2 state of D_3
are compared to those of H_3 and to theoretical values calculated from an ab
initio potential energy surface. The data give insight into the importance of

Soil moisture detection from radar imagery of the Phoenix, Arizona test site
The Environmental Research Institute of Michigan (ERIM) dual-polarization X and L band radar was flown to acquire radar imagery over the Phoenix (Arizona) test site. The site was covered by a north-south pass and an east-west pass. Radar response to soil moisture was investigated. Since the ERIM radar does not have accurately measured antenna patterns, analysis of the L band data was performed separately for each of several strips along the flight line, each corresponding to a narrow angle of incidence. For the NS pass, good correlation between the radar return and mositure content was observed for each of the two nearest (to nadir) angular ranges. At higher angular ranges, no correlation was observed. The above procedure was not applied to the EW pass due to flight path misalignments. The results obtained stress the importance of radar calibration, the digitization process, and the angle of incidence
Eddington limited starbursts in the central 10pc of AGN, and the Torus in NGC1068
We present results from a survey of nearby AGN using the near infrared
adaptive optics integral field spectrograph SINFONI. These data enable us to
probe the distribution and kinematics of the gas and stars at spatial
resolutions as small as 0.085arcsec. We find strong evidence for recent but
short lived starbursts residing in very dense nuclear disks. On scales of less
than 10pc these would have reached Eddington-limited luminosities when active,
perhaps accounting for their short duration. In addition, for NGC1068 at a
resolution of 6pc, we present direct observations of molecular gas close around

Watch your steps: Designing a semi-public display to promote physical activity
Sedentary time is considered a health risk factor, even when it is compensated with some exercise. Frequent activities of minimal physical exertion throughout the day like walking or climbing stairs are therefore recommended. To promote these activities through social play and collective awareness, we designed a semipublic display that shows the step count of a group of players in near real-time, using a wearable self-monitoring device that senses their physical activity. We included a fictional player that walked at constant speed during the whole day to promote a shared goal. Our preliminary findings suggest that the display motivated players to use a self-monitoring device everyday and enabled new conversations among players without producing privacy issues. Emotional connections with non-collocated participants and creative ways of cheating were also observed. We believe our work highlights the opportunities to extend the potential of selfmonitoring devices, which require little effort and resources to be implemented
Multiple Cdk1 Inhibitory Kinases Regulate the Cell Cycle during Development
AbstractThe Wee kinases block entry into mitosis by phosphorylating and inhibiting the activity of the mitotic cyclin-dependent kinase, Cdk1. We have found that the various Xenopus Wee kinases have unique temporal and spatial patterns of expression during development. In addition, we have isolated and characterized a new Wee1-like kinase, Xenopus Wee2. By both in vivo and in vitro tests, Xenopus Wee2 functions as a Wee1-like kinase. The previously isolated Wee1-like kinase, Xenopus Wee1, is expressed only as maternal gene product. In contrast, Xenopus Wee2 is predominantly a zygotic gene product, while the third Wee kinase, Xenopus Myt1, is both a maternal and zygotic gene product. Concurrent with the changing levels of these Cdk inhibitory kinases, the pattern of embryonic cell division becomes asynchronous and spatially restricted in the Xenopus embryo. Interestingly, once zygotic transcription begins, Xenopus Wee2 is expressed in regions of the embryo that are devoid of mitotic cells, such as the involuting mesoderm. In contrast, Xenopus Myt1 is expressed in regions of the embryo that have high levels of proliferation, such as the developing neural tissues. The existence of multiple Wee kinases may help explain how distinct patterns of cell division arise and are regulated during development
