The Helios mechanical despin drive assembly for the high-gain antenna reflector
Helios is the German-American solar probe which comes within 0.31 Astronomical Units of the sun. A special thermal design and a dry lubrication system have resulted in successful operation up to now, with Helios having finished its first orbit around the sun
Pairing, Ferromagnetism, and Condensation of a normal spin-1 Bose gas
We theoretically study the stability of a normal, spin disordered, homogenous
spin-1 Bose gas against ferromagnetism, pairing, and condensation through a
Random Phase Approximation which includes exchange (RPA-X). Repulsive
spin-independent interactions stabilize the normal state against both
ferromagnetism and pairing, and for typical interaction strengths leads to a
direct transition from an unordered normal state to a fully ordered single
particle condensate. Atoms with much larger spin-dependent interaction may
experience a transition to a ferromagnetic normal state or a paired superfluid,
but, within the RPA-X, there is no instability towards a normal state with
spontaneous nematic order. We analyze the role of the quadratic Zeeman effect
and finite system size.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, 1 table. Supplementary materials attache
Mass gap in the critical gravitational collapse of a kink
We study the gravitational collapse of a kink within spherical symmetry and
the characteristic formulation of General Relativity. We explore some expected
but elusive gravitational collapse issues which have not been studied before in
detail, finding new features. The numerical one-parametric solution and the
structure of the spacetime are calculated using finite differences, Galerkin
collocation techniques, and some scripting for automated grid coverage. We
study the threshold of black hole formation and confirm a mass gap in the phase
transition. In the supercritical case we find a mass scaling power law
,
with independent of the initial data for the cases
considered, and , and each depending on the initial
datum. The spacetime has a self-similar structure with a period of
. In the subcritical case the Bondi mass at null infinity
decays in cascade with interval as expected.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures; to appear in Physical Review
Noise data for a twin-engine commercial jet aircraft flying conventional, steep, and two-segment approaches
Center-line noise measurements of a twin-engine commercial jet aircraft were made during steep landing approach profiles, and during two-segment approach profiles for comparison with similar measurements made during conventional approaches. The steep and two-segment approaches showed significant noise reductions when compared with the -3 deg base line. The measured noise data were also used to develop a method for estimating the noise under the test aircraft at thrust and altitude conditions typical of current landing procedures and of landing procedures under development for the Advanced Air Traffic Control System
Parton Saturation-An Overview
The idea of partons and the utility of using light-cone gauge in QCD are
introduced. Saturation of quark and gluon distributions are discussed using
simple models and in a more general context. The Golec-Biernat W\usthoff model
and some simple phenomenology are described. A simple, but realistic, equation
for unitary, the Kovchegov equation, is discussed, and an elementary derivation
of the JIMWLK equation is given.Comment: Cargese Lectures, 34 pages, 19 figure

Evidence for virtual Compton scattering from the proton
In virtual Compton scattering an electron is scattered off a nucleon such that the nucleon emits a photon. We show that these events can be selected experimentally, and present the first evidence for virtual Compton scattering from the proton in data obtained at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The angular and energy dependence of the data is well described by a calculation that includes the coherent sum of electron and proton radiation
Momentum Transfer Dependence of Nuclear Transparency from the Quasielastic ^(12)C(e, e'p) Reaction
The cross section for quasielastic ^(12)C(e,e’p) scattering has been measured at momentum transfer Q^2=1, 3, 5, and 6.8 (GeV/c)^2. The results are consistent with scattering from a single nucleon as the dominant process. The nuclear transparency is obtained and compared with theoretical calculations that incorporate color transparency effects. No significant rise of the transparency with Q^2 is observed
Diamond thin Film Detectors for Beam Monitoring Devices
Diamonds offer radiation hard sensors, which can be used directly in primary
beams. Here we report on the use of a polycrystalline CVD diamond strip sensor
as beam monitor of heavy ion beams with up to 2.10^9 lead ions per bunch. The
strips allow for a determination of the transverse beam profile to a fraction
of the pitch of the strips, while the timing information yields the
longitudinal bunch length with a resolution of the order of a few mm.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures, to appear in the Proceedings of the Hasselt

Decay of Superflow Confined in Thin Torus: A Realization of Tunneling Quantum Fields
The quantum nucleation of phase slips in neutral superfluids confined in a
thin torus is investigated by means of the collective coordinate method. We
have devised, with numerical justification, a certain collective coordinate to
describe the quantum nucleation process of a phase slip. Considering the
quantum fluctuation around the local minimum of the action, we calculate the
effective mass of the phase slip. Due to the coherence of the condensate
throughout the torus, the effective mass is proportional to the circumference L
of the torus, and the decay rate has a strong exponential L-dependence.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, REVTe
