    Esta disserta√ß√£o tem por objecto a flor da melancolia e o √≠mpeto cesariano nas Mem√≥rias P√≥stumas de Br√°s Cubas, de Machado de Assis, no√ß√Ķes que reflectem um confronto com a tem√°tica schopenhauriana e nietzschiana da nega√ß√£o e afirma√ß√£o da vida. Trata-se de uma tese em Filosofia ‚Äď variante Est√©tica, que procura identificar no romance do escritor brasileiro aquilo que nele corresponde a um substrato metaf√≠sico, a uma procura pelo sentido e a uma tentativa de lidar com o sofrimento ‚Äď feitas por um homem para quem Deus morreu, e que encontra numa dimens√£o temporal tudo o que h√° para encontrar. Consideramos que a despeito do pessimismo que atravessa o livro, h√° nele uma vitalidade que decorre grandemente do ponto de vista do narrador, do facto de as Mem√≥rias serem P√≥stumas. E pensamos que √© no acto criador da escrita que Br√°s Cubas, e com ele Machado de Assis, firma o estandarte de C√©sar e abotoa a flor da melancolia, o sofrimento de que padece a Humanidade e que, no caso do personagem, surge depois da morte da m√£e, no per√≠odo de luto em que, pela primeira vez, h√° um questionamento acerca de si pr√≥prio e do seu lugar no mundo

    Nesta apresentação, concentramo-nos em (i) descrever os recursos linguísticos do Port4NooJ, (ii) ilustrar a aplicação destes recursos a textos para identificação e anotação de variados fenómenos linguísticos, (iii) discutir as possibilidades de expansão e melhoria destes recursos, nomeadamente o alargamento do dicionário e gramáticas de identificação e formalização de unidades lexicais multipalavra, (iv) demonstrar a utilidade destes recursos para a análise sintáctica e tradução automática, e finalmente (v) explorar a possibilidade de integração de novos recursos e propor colaboração para projectos futuros

    Technological potential of a Lupin protein concentrate as a nutraceutical delivery system in baked cookies

    Previous reports have shown that lupin protein extracts (LE) contain a polypeptide named deflamin with a potent matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9 inhibitory activity. The aim of our study was to develop an efficient delivery method for incorporating deflamin into cookies using different alternative flours. A lupin protein concentrate (10 g protein/100 g cookie dough) was added to gluten and gluten-free flours to produce savoury cookies, and its impacts on the physical properties of doughs and cookies, as well on the maintenance of deflamin’s anti-MMP-9 activity, were analysed. The results showed that the biochemical compositions of all cookies with LE presented higher protein and ash contents when compared to the control cookies. Rice, buckwheat and oat doughs were firmer than the others, whereas the addition of LE to kamut and buckwheat flours made cookies significantly firmer than the controls. Additionally, strong interactions between LE and several flours were observed, yielding different impacts on the MMP-9 bioactivity. Overall, the only flour that did not interfere with the desired nutraceutical activities was buckwheat, with 60% MMP-9 inhibitory activity and a concomitant reduction of colon cancer migration; hence, buckwheat flour was revealed to be a good vehicle to deliver bioactive deflamin, showing strong potential as a functional food to be used in preventive or curative approaches to gastrointestinal diseasesinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons May Contibute for Prostate Cancer Progression

    Prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer affecting men in the Western world. Risk factors include ageing, genetics, recurrent inflammation, lifestyle and diet intake, related to an increase of oxidative stress. Prostate cancer risk is also associated with exposure to carcinogen such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), originated from the incomplete combustion of carbon-containing fuels like tobacco, wood, diesel, or charbroiled meat. Although numerous studies have associated the effect of PAHs to tumour development, few investigations have associated its effects to cancer progression. Considering that prostate cancer patients don’t die from localized prostate cancer but from advanced disease, we are interested in investigating whether PAHs may potentially influence prostate cancer progression and how this could be related to an increase in oxidative stress. Likewise we evaluated the effect of PAHs (pyrene, benzo(a) pyrene, chrysene and benzo(k)fluoranthene) on cell growth and in the expression of molecules involved in cancer me- tastization such as the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and hypoxia inducible factor (HIF) using prostate- derived cell lines from localized adenocarcinoma (HPV10), bone metastasis (PC3) and in non-neoplastic prostate epi- thelium cells. Moreover, we evaluated oxidative stress parameters, assessing reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and reduced glutathione content. Our data clearly demonstrates that PAHs can stimulate cell growth, particularly in lo- calized cancer cells and induce an increase of VEGF and HIF expression. These results are concomitant with an increase of ROS production, suggesting that PAHs exposure may participate in prostate cancer progression, in part, due to an increase of ROS. Therefore this study suggests that PAHs exposure should be avoided to prevent prostate cancer progression

    Contributos para a redução de erros de medicação em pediatria: prescrição electrónica e participação da farmácia

    Erros de medica√ß√£o s√£o um qualquer acontecimento preven√≠vel que pode causar dano no doente quando os medicamentos se encontram sob a responsabilidade dos profissionais de sa√ļde e podem ocorrer em todo o circuito do medicamento. Afectando todos os doentes, apresentam uma maior incid√™ncia e gravidade nos doentes pedi√°tricos pelas suas caracter√≠sticas fisiol√≥gicas e comportamentais pr√≥prias desta fase do desenvolvimento. Grande parte destes erros podem ser evitados. Um dos elementos que mais tem contribu√≠do para a redu√ß√£o dos erros de medica√ß√£o em pediatria tem sido a introdu√ß√£o nos hospitais de sistemas de prescri√ß√£o electr√≥nica (Computerized Prescription Order Entry - CPOE) que, em associa√ß√£o com um maior envolvimento da farm√°cia no circuito do medicamento, permite uma redu√ß√£o da ocorr√™ncia de erros at√© 81,3%.     Development and physicochemical characterization of a new grass pea (Lathyrus sativus L.) miso

    BACKGROUND: Western consumers interest in Eastern fermented foods has been growing, due to their nutritional and healthy properties. In this study, new sweet misos and salty misos were produced using grass pea (Lathyrus sativus L.) ‚Äď traditional Portuguese legume from local producers ‚Äď to promote its consumption and preservation. The evolution of the new misos was evaluated in comparison to traditional miso (made from soybean), through analysis of the chemical composition, colour, texture and linear viscoelastic behaviour. RESULTS: Throughout the fermentation process, the ascorbic acid and phenolic compounds content ‚Äď with important nutritional value ‚Äď increased in all misos, mainly in misos produced using grass pea, besides, grass pea sweet miso presented the fastest evolution and darkest colour. The texture parameters (firmness and adhesiveness) of misos decreased over time: grass pea sweet miso showed the highest firmness reduction (51.63 N to 6.52 N) and soybean sweet miso the highest adhesiveness reduction (27.76 N to 3.11 N). Viscoelastic moduli also decreased, reflecting a reduction in the degree of internal structuring for all misos. However, grass pea misos presented more structured internal systems with faster maturation kinetics than soybean misos, for which stabilization started earlier. CONCLUSION: Two innovative misos were developed from grass pea. After 4 months, the texture parameters and viscoelastic moduli for grass pea misos, were similar to the control misos made from soybean, showing that grass pea can be used as a raw material to produce a sustainable miso with potentially healthy propertiesinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
