For six years, I studied how young Australians use search engines. Both school students and home-schoolers (the nation’s fastest growing educational cohort) showed some traits of online searching that aren’t beneficial. For instance, both groups spent greater time on irrelevant websites than relevant ones and regularly quit searches before finding their desired information
Making the invisible visible : Critical discourse analysis as a tool for search engine research
Like information science more broadly, search engine research has largely been fragmented into two factions: system-oriented and user-oriented studies. This limits our capacity for answering some fundamental questions surrounding an integral—often invisible—part of modern life. Given the “search-ification” of this life, given an oligopolous global market and an information-wealthy but attention-poor audience, methods capable of studying search engines, as well as their relationship with users and society are increasingly necessary. This paper proposes critical discourse analysis (CDA) as an effectual, oft-overlooked method for search engine research, one capable of interrogating both search engines and their use. The paper outlines CDA, provides examples of its application, and highlights its capacity for progressing our critical understanding of search engines. This developing understanding, evidenced by a review of the literature, suggests that challenges brought by search cannot be resolved by critiquing the power of systems alone. Rather, a reclaiming of today's information infrastructure requires we also illuminate the socio-political environments of search systems, and the metacognitive, invisible processes pivotal to our communication with them. While power-analyses of search continue, and some have begun to employ CDA, little recognition exists of this theoretical perspective's capacity for supporting both system-oriented and user-oriented studies
'Google Speak': The discursive practices of search in home-education
Learning with technology is increasingly understood to be a social process involving unique and telling discourses. An emerging research agenda has resulted, investigating the links between ‘talk’ and student technological practices but is yet to include home-education. Preliminary evidence exists of a relationship between particular types of ‘talk’ and success with particular online activities, namely online search. This may prove especially pertinent to home-educators who report that their most prolific online activities are those reliant upon search engines like Google. This paper presents select findings from a study into online search and the associated discursive practices among early primary students and their parent-educators in Australia. Data from observations, tests and interviews with five home-educating families were analysed recursively using a system guided by Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis. Specifically, this paper seeks to investigate: which discursive practices are privileged in these sites during online search; the extent to which these practices contribute to relations of power and the extent to which these practices are found alongside effective online search. Findings revealed a prevalence of inequitable discursive practices, those that either inhibited the equal conversational power of speakers or which naturalised inequitable power relations more generally. These discursive practices were found alongside ineffective online searches. Notwithstanding, participants continued to speak positively about search engines and their educational power. This rhetoric-reality gap is theorized in the paper as the work of dominant ideologies surrounding technology in education. Findings can assist the growing number of home-educators and their students to use online search more effectively. Insights regarding links between discursive practice and search practice may also help ensure that discourse helps to maximise the educational benefits associated with online search
Socio-educational experiences of black accounting III students who dropped out of the University of Fort Hare in 2009
In South Africa there is an increasing concern regarding retention among Black students (who constitute the majority of the population) in general and in particular regarding the costs of student failure to both the students and for the institution. This thesis endeavours to obtain an understanding of the socio-educational experiences which led to Black Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting Students in 2009 dropping out of Accounting III at the University of Fort Hare. In a field in which much of the literature is quantitatively orientated, a phenomenological investigation offered a unique way of understanding the experiences of the students as it allowed their voices to be heard. Insights contained in the data were synthesised and integrated into a consistent description of the essential nature of the experience, the primary endeavour of the phenomenologist being to transform naïve experience into more explicitly detailed conceptual knowledge. The use of in-depth interviews with three students, all of whom had dropped out of Accounting III at UFH, allowed the researcher interaction on a personal level with people not viewed as experimental objects but as human subjects. The findings revealed that the students‘ social and educational background, together with the language of teaching and learning not being their mother tongue, caused students great difficulty. Interaction between lecturers and students and the subject content proved very challenging due to the language barrier. The introduction of General Accounting III in the same class as Accounting III in 2009 compounded the students‘ confusion and this ultimately led to students feeling demotivated. These findings contributed significantly to an understanding of why these three students dropped out of Accounting III in 2009, and at the same time provided an answer to the research question relating to how Black students who dropped out of the Accounting III programme in 2009, experienced the course
Search engine use as a literacy in the middle years: the need for explicit instruction and active learners
The internet has provided today’s middle years students with limitless, instantaneous information offering unprecedented educational benefits. Scholars have noted, however, that students frequently struggle to find information in such an overwhelming environment and exhibit a searching skill-deficit despite frequent use. Research also suggests that this deficit is rarely responded to with explicit search instruction in schools. Little is known however, about the potential benefits of exposing students to explicit search engines skills, nor the way they view their role when searching online. This paper therefore presents data from an intervention carried out with middle years students in relation to online searching skills. Data revealed that although a single intervention was not sufficient in changing the students’ views of themselves as searchers, nor of perfecting search strategies, students showed a willingness to adopt all new strategies taught. This knowledge has possible implications for better equipping students for learning and assessment, especially when research and online searching are required for success
Distribution of raphespinal fibers in the mouse spinal cord
Background: Serotonergic raphespinal neurons and their fibers have been mapped in large mammals, but the non- serotonergic ones have not been studied, especially in the mouse. The present study aimed to investigate the termination pattern of fibers arising from the hindbrain raphe and reticular nuclei which also have serotonergic neurons by injecting the anterograde tracer BDA into them. Results: We found that raphespinal fibers terminate in both the dorsal and ventral horns in addition to lamina 10. There is a shift of the fibers in the ventral horn towards the dorsal and lateral part of the gray matter. Considerable variation in the termination pattern also exists between raphe nuclei with raphe magnus having more fibers terminating in the dorsal horn. Fibers from the adjacent gigantocellular reticular nucleus show similar termination pattern as those from the raphe nuclei with slight difference. Immunofluorescence staining showed that raphespinal fibers were heterogeneous and serotoninergic fibers were present in all laminae but mainly in laminae 1, 2, medial lamina 8, laminae 9 and 10. Surprisingly, immunofluorescence staining on clarified spinal cord tissue revealed that serotoninergic fibers formed bundles regularly in a short distance along the rostrocaudal axis in the medial part of the ventral horn and they extended towards the lateral motor neuron column area. Conclusion: Serotonergic and non-serotonergic fibers arising from the hindbrain raphe and reticular nuclei had similar termination pattern in the mouse spinal cord with subtle difference. Documenting ---- in Bloomington-Normal: A Community Report on Intolerance, Segregation, Accessibility, Inclusion, and Progress, and Improvement
For the local chapter of Not In Our Town, we document intolerance, discrimination, segregation, disparities of access, and disparities in the criminal justice system in Bloomington-Normal, IL. Using archival material, secondary data, and primary data, we examine these issues from the mid-1990s to the present. We also assess the position of the organization in the community and provide strategies for future success. In sum, Bloomington-Normal was and is intolerant; discrimination did and does take place in this community; there are disparities of access and in the criminal justice system; we are segregated. The community is also less of these things than it used to be and is less of these things than other places. Fifteen undergraduate students in Sociology 300, twelve graduate students in Sociology 477, a teaching assistant, and an instructor conducted this study in spring 2017
Randomized controlled phase IIa clinical trial of safety, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of tenofovir and tenofovir plus levonorgestrel releasing intravaginal rings used by women in Kenya
IntroductionGlobally, many young women face the overlapping burden of HIV infection and unintended pregnancy. Protection against both may benefit from safe and effective multipurpose prevention technologies.MethodsHealthy women ages 18–34 years, not pregnant, seronegative for HIV and hepatitis B surface antigen, not using hormonal contraception, and at low risk for HIV were randomized 2:2:1 to continuous use of a tenofovir/levonorgestrel (TFV/LNG), TFV, or placebo intravaginal ring (IVR). In addition to assessing genital and systemic safety, we determined TFV concentrations in plasma and cervicovaginal fluid (CVF) and LNG levels in serum using tandem liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. We further evaluated TFV pharmacodynamics (PD) through ex vivo CVF activity against both human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1 and herpes simplex virus (HSV)-2, and LNG PD using cervical mucus quality markers and serum progesterone for ovulation inhibition.ResultsAmong 312 women screened, 27 were randomized to use one of the following IVRs: TFV/LNG (n = 11); TFV-only (n = 11); or placebo (n = 5). Most screening failures were due to vaginal infections. The median days of IVR use was 68 [interquartile range (IQR), 36–90]. Adverse events (AEs) were distributed similarly among the three arms. There were two non-product related AEs graded >2. No visible genital lesions were observed. Steady state geometric mean amount (ssGMA) of vaginal TFV was comparable in the TFV/LNG and TFV IVR groups, 43,988 ng/swab (95% CI, 31,232, 61,954) and 30337 ng/swab (95% CI, 18,152, 50,702), respectively. Plasma TFV steady state geometric mean concentration (ssGMC) was <10 ng/ml for both TFV IVRs. In vitro, CVF anti-HIV-1 activity showed increased HIV inhibition over baseline following TFV-eluting IVR use, from a median of 7.1% to 84.4% in TFV/LNG, 15.0% to 89.5% in TFV-only, and −27.1% to −20.1% in placebo participants. Similarly, anti-HSV-2 activity in CVF increased >50 fold after use of TFV-containing IVRs. LNG serum ssGMC was 241 pg/ml (95% CI 185, 314) with rapid rise after TFV/LNG IVR insertion and decline 24-hours post-removal (586 pg/ml [95% CI 473, 726] and 87 pg/ml [95% CI 64, 119], respectively).ConclusionTFV/LNG and TFV-only IVRs were safe and well tolerated among Kenyan women. Pharmacokinetics and markers of protection against HIV-1, HSV-2, and unintended pregnancy suggest the potential for clinical efficacy of the multipurpose TFV/LNG IVR.Clinical Trial RegistrationNCT03762382 [https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT03762382
Pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV-negative persons with partners living with HIV: uptake, use, and effectiveness in an open-label demonstration project in East Africa [version 2; referees: 2 approved]
Background: Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) can provide high protection against HIV infection and is a recommended intervention for HIV-negative persons with substantial HIV risk. Demonstration projects conducted in diverse settings worldwide illustrate practical examples of how PrEP can be delivered. This manuscript presents estimates of effectiveness and patterns of PrEP use within a two-year demonstration project of PrEP for HIV-negative members of heterosexual HIV serodiscordant couples in East Africa. Methods: The PrEP delivery model integrated PrEP into HIV treatment services, prioritizing PrEP use for HIV-negative partners within serodiscordant couples before and during the first 6 months after the partner living with HIV initiated antiretroviral therapy (ART). We measured PrEP uptake through pharmacy records and adherence to PrEP through medication event monitoring system (MEMS) bottle caps and quantification of tenofovir in plasma among a random sample of participants. We estimated HIV infections prevented using a counterfactual cohort simulated from the placebo arm of a previous PrEP clinical trial. Results: We enrolled 1,010 HIV serodiscordant couples that were naïve to ART and PrEP. Ninety-seven percent of HIV-negative partners initiated PrEP. Objective measures suggest high adherence: 71% of HIV-negative participants took ≥80% of expected doses, as recorded via MEMS, and 81% of plasma samples had tenofovir detected. Four incident HIV infections were observed (incidence rate=0.24 per 100 person-years), a 95% reduction (95% CI 86-98%, p<0.0001) in HIV incidence, relative to estimated HIV incidence for the population in the absence of PrEP integrated into HIV treatment services. Conclusions: PrEP uptake and adherence were high and incident HIV was rare in this PrEP demonstration project for African HIV-negative individuals whose partners were known to be living with HIV. Delivery of PrEP to HIV-negative partners within HIV serodiscordant couples was feasible and should be prioritized for wide-scale implementation
