Rehabilitation nutrition care for elderly people with sarcopenia and nutritional disorders
Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) and Integrative Medicine (IM) have the characteristic aspect of patient-oriented medicine. Recent problems include elderly people with sarcopenia, frailty, nutritional disorder and daily rehabilitation. It has been evaluated by International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). A circulating process for rehabilitation nutrition care has five stages, which are Assessment/diagnostic reasoning, Diagnosis, Goal setting, Intervention, Monitoring. For goal setting, check list for SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time) is useful. Diagnosis of rehabilitation nutrition includes the presence or absence of malnutrition, sarcopenia, and deficiency or excess of nutrient intake. When a subject has sarcopenia, we had to check whether it should be improved and whether it can be improved. To prevent iatrogenic sarcopenia will bring the benefit preventing sarcopenia in the whole body, swallowing- and respiratory-related muscles
Effective Unloading Squat Training for Improved Running with Rhythmic Music
Our rehabilitation research group has been teaching various patients, sportsmen, and related people, and recently presented squat exercises without loading to the music. The reason includes large reaction power obtained from the ground. Concerning continuous unloading squat training, important factors are adequate posture, weight, and reflexes. We developed effective unloading squat training accompanied with rhythmic music, in which reggae music is recommended for its clear afterbeats. There are three important tips for successful and satisfactory operation of the exercise, which are relaxed standing, hip joint movement, and neck stretch. This method will be hopefully used for clinical practice
Better Application of Exercise Prescription with Adequate Supports to All People
The phrase “Exercise is Medicine” has been well-known. American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) emphasizes the exercise prescription with recommendations of assessment for all occasions and for all. It includes the crucial concepts of FITT-VP, which stand for frequency, intensity, time, type, volume, and progression (pattern). When a physical therapist or trainer advises the subjects, the specific exercise goals would be set as feasible short-term goals. The formation of exercise habits would be more significant even if the goal cannot be achieved. From bio-psycho-social points of view, subjects will be supported by an adequate manner for a successful life with happy sports
Getting an Efficient Running Form Accompanied with Reggae Rhythm
The authors and collaborators have continued various workshops for masters’ athletes and others. To take the most of extension reflex of hamstrings and to obtain the responsive power from the ground would be recommended. The involved joints are hip, knee and ankles. For these joints, the key points of the squat exercise include instant weight removal and extension reflex. Reggae music is characteristic for its afterbeats rhythm with the accents of 2nd and 4th beats. They are upbeats, that is contrast to downbeats in classic music. Combined these, trainee can master the tips for faster and safer running method
Research on Spinal Column from Three-Dimension Viewpoints with Spinal Mouse and Pole Exercise
In the orthopedic and rehabilitation medicine, low back pain (LBP) is a prevalent problem. For the evaluation of LBP and spinal posture and mobility, Spinal Mouse has been used for sagittal and frontal planes. It is reliable, feasible and non-invasive device, and can obtain the detail data of the surface-based measurements of the curvature in the spine. As to clinical practice and research, authors have developed pole exercise and reported several articles with fundamental six main movements. They show the movements of three dimensions with lateral bending, axis rotation, wave motion, backward spiral, forward spiral and warp & rounding
Effective Practice Using Pole Exercise Would Contribute for The Situation of “Exercise is Medicine”
The presence of the sports can historically contribute international understanding and cooperation. Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo will be scheduled, and “Exercise is Medicine” has been known widely by American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). Authors et al. have continued clinical practice and research on pole exercise for years. The methods include various movements in frontal, horizontal and sagittal planes. The pole consists of aluminum with 60-160 cm in length. Moriyasu pole training would be clinically effective, which can simultaneously increase the flexibility of thorax, vertebrae and pelvis, and the functioning ability of joint movement and posture control
Introduction of home exercise program for current circumstance worldwide
Due to current pandemic of Coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19), elderly people tend to show deterioration of physical and cognitive function and exacerbation of nutritional status, leading to the progression of sarcopenia and frailty. Recent topic includes the National Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology-Home Exercise Program for Older People (NCGG-HEPOP) 2020. It has six packs for health maintenance, such as balance improvement, strengthening, inactivity prevention, feeding/swallowing improvement, nutrition improvement and cognition. The pandemic may bring decreased social interaction, decreased physical activity, and increased physical stress of viral infection. NCGG-HEPOP will hopefully prevent such exacerbation in the light of geriatrics and rehabilitation medicine
Recommended rehabilitation for trunk exercise with the concept of frontal, sagittal and horizontal plane
From anatomical and physiological points of view, human perform various movements, which are combined with behaviors of trunk and extremities. In human body, proprioception system has been present between sensory receptors and central nervous system (CNS). For this mechanism, minute motions are possible. Trunk has to be trained with the concept with three dimensions, which are frontal, sagittal and horizontal planes. Pole exercise has been developed for rehabilitation in the coordination of the movements of trunk and extremities, including bend and extend, side bend, turn, slide, spiral and rotate
