Themed issue on selected papers SEG2015: part II
This themed issue of Geomechanics for Energy and the Environment ‘SEG-2015-Part II’, presents papers selected from extended abstracts submitted to the Symposium on Energy Geotechnics (SEG-2015) held in the Civil Engineering School of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain, between June 2nd and 4th, 2015. This symposium SEG-2015 was the first event organized by the Technical Committee TC308 of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, which will have continuity in the next symposium SEG-2018 to be held in the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (Lausanne, Switzerland). The first issue ‘SEG-2015-Part I’ appeared just before the 1st International Conference on Energy Geotechnics (ICEG-2016), which was held in Kiel (Germany) at the end of August 2016. The second volume ‘SEG-2015-Part II’ on December 2016 will thus close a first cycle of successful conferences and publications along this
initial stage of TC308.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
Space use by foragers consuming renewable resources
We study a simple model of a forager as a walk that modifies a relaxing
substrate. Within it simplicity, this provides an insight on a number of
relevant and non-intuitive facts. Even without memory of the good places to
feed and no explicit cost of moving, we observe the emergence of a finite home
range. We characterize the walks and the use of resources in several
statistical ways, involving the behavior of the average used fraction of the
system, the length of the cycles followed by the walkers, and the frequency of
visits to plants. Preliminary results on population effects are explored by
means of a system of two non directly interacting animals. Properties of the
overlap of home ranges show the existence of a set of parameters that provides
the best utilization of the shared resource
One more step towards participatory modeling. Involving local stakeholders in designing scientific models for participative foresight studies
This paper focuses on the collective design and immediate execution of an agent-based model (ABM) by dynamically interpreting activity diagrams of agent behaviors. To reach this objective, we have implemented an ABM of livestock producers facing drought conditions in Uruguay. The first step consists in implementing a standard ABM with pasture growth, herd dynamics and simple agents roughly imitating farmers' strategies. The second step is more participative since it consists in assessing the model with the real cattle farmers. As it appears in a majority of modeling processes, this evaluation phase requires feedback on model design. In order to make this assessment more lively and efficient, we have conceived a tool for drawing diagrams and interpreting them immediately. Thanks to this new opportunity, the actors have quickly understood how the model worked and were able to criticize and modify it. Thus, this innovative modeling tool enables the involvement of stakeholders in co-designing ABM for participatory foresight studies. We hope it will facilitate the emergence of new and more efficient practices for farm management that account for climate changes. (Résumé d'auteur
Social education: Complementary reflections to a necessary academic education
This article deals with some reflections regarding training and professional practice of
social educators in the Uruguayan and Argentinian contexts. From the multiple perspectives that
could be considered, the text examines aspects that cannot be reduced exclusively to academic
education in the conventional sense, but respond to complex construction processes that involve
positions and dispositions that appeal to the subjective characteristics of social educators: the
political quality of educational practice, human sensitivity in this task and the relationship
between theory and practice. This piece derives from the systematization and resignification of
epistolary and face-to-face dialogues and debates among the authors. The text aims to be a warm,
sincere and passionate recommendation that is built on professional, academic and theoretical
experiences to be shared with those who join or walk the path of social education.

Successful Latin American initiatives in biophysics
The II LAFeBS Congress aimed to promote a closer interaction between Latin American and Iberian Peninsula scientists in their respective fields of research, from structural proteomics to molecular bioenergetics.
The speakers at this event reflected the importance and development of Biophysics in Latin American Countries, including Portugal and Spain; with 13 of them being invited to write review articles for this special issue of Biophysical Reviews.
We hope that the integration of biophysics and biophysicists in Latin America, together with Portugal and Spain, through LAFeBS and POSLATAM can contribute to the future development of biophysics in these two historical partner regions.Instituto Multidisciplinario de BiologÃa Celula

Influencia y chocolate.
Formic acid oxidation over hierarchical porous carbon containing PtPd catalysts
The use of high surface monolithic carbon as support for catalysts offers important advantage, such as elimination of the ohmic drop originated in the interparticle contact and improved mass transport by ad-hoc pore design. Moreover, the approach discussed here has the advantage that it allows the synthesis of materials having a multimodal porous size distribution, with each pore size contributing to the desired properties. On the other hand, the monolithic nature of the porous support also imposes new challenges for metal loading. In this work, the use of Hierarchical Porous Carbon (HPC) as support for PtPd nanoparticles was explored. Three hierarchical porous carbon samples (denoted as HPC-300, HPC-400 and HPC-500) with main pore size around 300, 400 and 500 nm respectively, are used as porous support. PtPd nanoparticles were loaded by impregnation and subsequent chemical reduction with NaBH4. The resulting material was characterized by EDX, XRD and conventional electrochemical techniques. The catalytic activity toward formic acid and methanol electrooxidation was evaluated by electrochemical methods, and the results compared with commercial carbon supported PtPd. The Hierarchical Porous Carbon support discussed here seems to be promising for use in DFAFC anodes.Fil: Baena Moncada, Angélica MarÃa. Universidad Nacional de RÃo Cuarto.
