Thermal Performance of Horizontal Fixed Sun Shading Device

Earlier investigations on passive cooling methods applied software modelling, and the findings were not confirmed through field measurement. Hence, this study applied a stationary experiment on a real structure and weather conditions employing horizontal sun shading (SDH). The purpose of this study was to compare the performance of fixed passive sun-shading devices put on to the bare façade of three-story terrace shophouses in Malaysia. The experiment findings revealed that SDH significantly improved the internal thermal environment by lowering the average monthly indoor air temperature (Ta) by 0.98 K and the peak temperature by 2.11 K. SDH is also effective during the warmest sunny days, lowering 1.23 K on average for the day. Meanwhile, SDH reduced the temperature in the control room by 5.40 K during the warmest peak time. When it came to indoor mean radiant temperature (Tmrt), SDH performed better than the control room in the very hot peak over a month (2.38 K) and on the highest temperature of the day (7.70 K). Finally, it can be inferred that SDH worked better from late at night until early in the morning, cooling the room temperature faster. This quiescent choice is one of the best for enhancing a building's internal thermal performance while also possibly contributing to a decrease in operational energy consumption

Mixed-Use, Mixed-Income Neighbourhood Typo-Morphology: The Case of Kampong Bharu, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

The rapid development of the traditional urban village in relation to mixed-use, mixed-income neighbourhood are, typologically and morphologically being built and rebuilt, changing and evolving to meet the needs to contemporary society. Moreover, the fast pace of urban transformation has change the diversity of urban characters in a negative way as a result of unresponsive urban development decisions, which is showing a tendency to adopt new patterns, wipes out the more traditional character and weakens the rooted meanings of local places and neighbourhoods. Therefore, the aim of the research is to develop a conceptual framework and research methodology for identifying, analysing, and developing the locally appropriate urban design principles and characters of mixed-use, mixed-income neighbourhood typo-morphology through the integration of the traditional and modern urban development in the rapidly developing city and urban village of Kampong Bharu. Kampong Bharu, in the contemporary context was selected as a case study in which to carry out a rigorous and in-depth evaluation. By analysing Kampong Bharu, the research suggests that the local settlements are socially and culturally constructed and can understand the local form-production process that transform through morphological periods. Multi-faceted socio-spatial patterns re defined from the urban morphology and building typology, which are a foundation to interrogate aspects of changes and to interpret acceptable degrees of urban village development which varies between the patterns of form. The conceptual framework reviews theories and observes social phenomena in real settings to link the existing universal knowledge with local context. The methodology for identifying locally acceptable urban form was established by using a multi-method approach for analysing a case study of Kampong Bharu. Morphological and typological analytical methods were used to study its socio-spatial patterns of the city and identify key socio-spatial invariants of its urban character. A mixed qualitative methods were applied for assessing perception-based data of form-adaptations reflecting capacity for change. Data collection techniques include archival and map analysis, building and photographic surveys and semi-structured interviews. The data supported the development of initial proposals for improving the character of the neighbourhood area. Employing an inquiry by design method, the proposals were tested with local inhabitants in order to formulate final recommendations that inform the theories in a cyclical loop. As this research aims to demonstrate, the key challenge is to identify the appropriate urban design solutions to integrate the existing urban village settlements with the new urban developments that allows modernization without compromising the diversity of heritage characters, local place-identity and the sense of place. Once a locally acceptable urban form has been identified it fosters design change and alters processes in order to deliver a local urban design in a broader context which help in adding socio-economic value to the urban setting and support the needs of modern lifestyles
