Design and Assessment of an Interactive Digital Tutorial for Undergraduate-Level Sandstone Petrology

    Get PDF
This study describes the goals, features and effectiveness of a digital interactive tutorial which was created to provide undergraduates a 'virtual microscope' resource for learning sandstone petrology. The goal of the tutorial is to provide students exposure to the highly visual subject matter of petrography outside the confines of organized laboratory exercises. The hope is that widespread use of such digital interactive formats will allow students to gain high levels of expertise with description and interpretation of earth materials despite the reduced amounts of hands-on laboratory practice that are allowed by modern curricula. Educational levels: Graduate or professional

Evaluation of a Pound Net Leader Designed to Reduce Sea Turtle Bycatch

Offshore pound net leaders in the southern portion of Chesapeake Bay in Virginia waters were documented to incidentally take protected loggerhead, Caretta caretta, and Kemp’s ridley, Lepidochelys kempii, sea turtles. Because of these losses, NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) in 2004 closed the area to offshore pound net leaders annually from 6 May to 15 July and initiated a study of an experimental leader design that replaced the top two-thirds of the traditional mesh panel leader with vertical ropes (0.95 cm) spaced 61 cm apart. This experimental leader was tested on four pound net sites on the eastern shore of Chesapeake Bay in 2004 and 2005. During the 2 trial periods, 21 loggerhead and Kemp’s ridley sea turtles were found interacting with the control leader and 1 leatherback turtle, Dermochelys coriacea, was found interacting with the experimental leader. Results of a negative binomial regression analysis comparing the two leader designs found the experimental leader significantly reduced sea turtle interactions (p=0.03). Finfish were sampled from the pound nets in the study to assess finfish catch performance differences between the two leader designs. Although the conclusions from this element of the experiment are not robust, paired t-test and Wilcoxon signed rank test results determined no significant harvest weight difference between the two leaders. Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests did not reveal any substantive size selectivity differences between the two leaders

Population Pharmacokinetics of Ribavirin in Lung Transplant Recipients and Examination of Current and Alternative Dosing Regimens

Ribavirin is used in the treatment of respiratory paramyxovirus infection in lung transplant recipients; however, its pharmacokinetic profile in the transplant population is unknown despite the potential for alterations due to underlying pathology. Furthermore, the ability of current regimens to meet exposure targets has not been established. This study examined the pharmacokinetics of ribavirin in a lung transplant population from which current and alternate dosing regimens were assessed. Population pharmacokinetic modelling was conducted in NONMEM using concentrationtime data from 24 lung transplant recipients and 6 healthy volunteers. Monte Carlo simulation was used to assess the ability of dosing regimens to achieve pre-specified target concentrations. A three-compartment model with first order elimination most adequately described ribavirin concentration-time data, with creatinine clearance and patient type (i.e. lung transplant) identified as significant covariates in the model. Simulations indicate that current regimens achieve efficacious concentrations within 24 hours of treatment initiation that increase to supra-therapeutic levels over the treatment period. A regimen of 8 mg/kg q6h oral for 48 hours followed by 8 mg/kg q24h oral for the remainder of the treatment period was predicted to result in \u3e90% of patients exhibiting concentrations within the defined target range throughout the entire treatment course. Additional work to formally establish of target therapeutic concentrations is required; however, this study provides a valuable first step in determining optimal ribavirin treatment regimens for paramyxovirus infections in the lung transplant population

The Implementation of Online Classroom Management Professional Development for Beginning Teachers

    Get PDF
Effective classroom management practices are well known, yet the most efficient ways to teach them to beginning teachers is not. Online professional development is growing in popularity—though there are few examples of online classroom management training in the literature. The purpose of this qualitative study was to evaluate the experiences and implementation practices of beginning teachers that participated in online classroom management training as part of their new teacher induction program. The results suggest that online classroom management professional development as part of new teacher induction is a practical option. The beginning teachers were observed utilizing the classroom management strategies taught within the online course and expressed satisfaction with their learning experience. Every interview participant indicated an increase in their knowledge of best practices and ability to manage the classroom after completing the online classroom management training
