    Faults and unbalance forces in the switched reluctance machine

    The paper identifies and analyzes a number of severe fault conditions that can occur in the switched reluctance machine, from the electrical and mechanical points of view. It is shown how the currents, torques, and forces may be estimated, and examples are included showing the possibility of large lateral forces on the rotor. The methods used for analysis include finite-element analysis, magnetic circuit models, and experiments on a small machine specially modified for the measurement of forces and magnetization characteristics when the rotor is off-center. Also described is a computer program (PC-SRD dynamic) which is used for simulating operation under fault conditions as well as normal conditions. The paper discusses various electrical configurations of windings and controller circuits, along with methods of fault detection and protective relaying. The paper attempts to cover several analytical and experimental aspects as well as methods of detection and protection

    Optimal design of switched reluctance motors

    The fundamental theory of the switched reluctance motor is presented with a number of new equations. It is used to show how the practical development of a design calculation should proceed, and this leads to a discussion of physical characteristics required to achieve satisfactory performance and to reduce acoustic noise. The paper makes a few generic observations on the characteristics of successful products that use switched reluctance motors. It is written at a basic engineering level and makes no attempt to apply sophisticated optimization theory

    Revolving-field polygon technique for performance prediction of single-phase induction motors

    This paper presents a new analytical technique for improving the performance prediction of single-phase induction motors, especially capacitor motors. The technique uses the split-phase motor electrical equivalent circuit analysis together with electrical and magnetic parameters whose variation is computed from the equivalent balanced polyphase motor, so that the same magnetic circuit analysis can be used for both. (The term split-phase is used to cover motors operating from a single-phase supply but with the phase windings split into two orthogonal windings, one of which may have a capacitor in series with it during running or starting.) The technique accounts for the elliptical envelope of the magnetizing field vector and results in improved precision, since the three-phase electromagnetic model is considered to be more precise than the normal split-phase motor analysis. An important result is the computation of vector polygons of flux density for each section of the magnetic circuit, providing a better basis for core loss prediction. The double-frequency torque ripple is also obtained from the stator magnetomotive force and flux-density polygons. Three different electrical equivalent circuit methods for the split-phase motor (based respectively on the cross-field theory, forward- and backward-revolving fields, and symmetrical components) are evaluated to determine the method best suited for incorporating the variation of the circuit parameters from the polyphase magnetic circuit analysis, and it is discussed how the core losses can be included in these circuits to obtain the best overall performance prediction

    A new sensorless method for switched reluctance motor drives

    This paper describes a new method for indirect sensing of the rotor position in switched reluctance motors (SRMs) using pulse width modulation voltage control. The detection method uses the change of the derivative of the phase current to detect the position where a rotor pole and stator pole start to overlap, giving one position update per energy conversion. As no a priori knowledge of motor parameters is required (except for the numbers of stator and rotor poles), the method is applicable to most SRM topologies in a wide power and speed range and for several inverter topologies. The method allows modest closed-loop dynamic performance. To start up the motor, a feedforward stepping method is used which assures robust startup (even under load) from standstill to a predefined speed at which closed-loop sensorless operation can be applied. Experimental results demonstrate the robust functionality of the method with just one current sensor in the inverter, even with excitation overlap, and the sensorless operation improves with speed. The method is comparable to the back-EMF position estimation for brushless DC motors in principle, performance and cost. A detailed operation and implementation of this scheme is shown, together with steady-state and dynamic transient test results

    Torque prediction using the flux-MMF diagram in AC, DC, and reluctance motors

    This paper uses the flux-MMF diagram to compare and contrast the torque production mechanism in seven common types of electric motor. The flux-MMF diagram is a generalized version of the flux-linkage versus current (ψ-i) diagram for switched-reluctance motors. It is illustrated for switched-reluctance, synchronous-reluctance, induction, brushless AC, brushless DC, interior PM and commutator motors. The calculated flux-MMF diagrams for motors with the same electromagnetic volume, airgap, slotfill, and total copper loss are shown and are used to compare the low-speed torque and torque ripple performance. The motor designs used were reasonably optimized using a combination of commercially available motor CAD packages and finite-element analysis

    Analysis and design of a two-speed single-phase induction motor with 2 and 18 pole special windings

    The motor presented employs multiple independent windings for operation with two very different pole numbers. The 18-pole field is produced with a symmetrical three-phase winding connected in a Steinmetz arrangement to a single-phase supply. A unified analysis method has been developed and used to demonstrate the equivalence of a Steinmetz delta or star connection with a main and auxiliary winding of a single-phase motor. The method has been experimentally validated and also included are some specific motor design considerations

    A general magnetic-energy-based torque estimator: validation via a permanent-magnet motor drive

    This paper describes the use of the current–flux-linkage (ipsii{-}psi ) diagram to validate the performance of a general magnetic-energy-based torque estimator. An early step in the torque estimation is the use of controller duty cycles to reconstruct the average phase-voltage waveform during each pulsewidth-modulation (PWM) switching period. Samples over the fundamental period are recorded for the estimation of the average torque. The fundamental period may not be an exact multiple of the sample time. For low speed, the reconstructed voltage requires additional compensation for inverter-device losses. Experimental validation of this reconstructed waveform with the actual PWM phase-voltage waveform is impossible due to the fact that one is PWM in nature and the other is the average value during the PWM period. A solution to this is to determine the phase flux-linkage using each waveform and then plot the resultant ipsii{-}psi loops. The torque estimation is based on instantaneous measurements and can therefore be applied to any electrical machine. This paper includes test results for a three-phase interior permanent-magnet brushless ac motor operating with both sinusoidal and nonsinusoidal current waveforms

    Analytical and numerical computation of air-gap magnetic fields in brushless motors with surface permanent magnets

    This paper extends the theory of the air-gap magnetic field in permanent-magnet (PM) brushless motors. Scalar and vector potential solutions to the field equations are brought together to unify many of the important practical methods already in use. The theory admits a more general representation of the magnetization vector than has been previously assumed, including both the radial and tangential components, and variation with radius. The work is applied in the design of PM motors where there is a requirement to minimize noise and torque ripple, and maximize efficiency, and a continuing need for improvements in the accuracy and rigor of design calculations. The air-gap flux-density distribution is at the heart of the design process, and it is desirable to study different magnetization patterns, including imperfections in the magnetization, for a wide range of magnet shapes. This paper shows the application of the analytical solutions in comparison with a new finite-element procedure, with test results on a prototype motor, and with simpler, older methods of calculation based on magnetic equivalent circuits. The comparison brings out many interesting points in relation to the accuracy and the speed and practicality of the various methods

    Assessment of torque components in brushless permanent-magnet machines through numerical analysis of the electromagnetic field

    For the calculation of torque in brushless (BL) alternating current motors a local method is proposed, based on the Maxwell stress theory and the filtered contributions due to the harmonics of the magnetic vector potential in the motor air gap. By considering the space fundamental field only, the method can efficiently estimate the average synchronous torque for a variety or motor topologies, including concentrated winding designs. For BL direct current motor analysis a global method is introduced, based on the virtual work principle expressed in terms of energy components in various motor regions. The method leads to simplifications in the average torque calculation and enables the direct identification of the cogging and ripple components. The mathematical procedures have been validated against experiments and other numerical techniques
